University of Regina unveils renewable energy microgrid

CTV News27-05-2025
WATCH: A new microgrid that relies on renewable energy is up and running at the University of Regina. Damian Smith reports.
Green is the colour, not just for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but also for the University of Regina – as the organization has unveiled a new microgrid system which relies on renewable energy.
The U of R's greenhouse gas technology centre is host to a power generator capable of producing several hundred megawatts.
It's part of the university's research efforts on microgrids – a small-scale power grid that can produce electricity for a localized area.
'Microgrids provide a lot of benefits, including advanced stability, lower costs, and new usability of, of generation,' explained Irfan Al Anbagi, an associate professor in the faculty of engineering and applied science.
'The control system is the brain of the micro. So everything is located in one area.'
The researchers say it's the first of its kind in Saskatchewan – and the university has partnered with small to medium sized businesses to put the grid to use.
Those with electric vehicles can also make use of the microgrid through free chargers just outside the facility.
Off campus, microgrids can help make renewable energy easier to access – especially in areas where connecting to a regular power grid is much more difficult.
'This can be beneficial to locations where you have difficulty supplying over. and you can utilize renewable generation as well,' Al-Anbagi added.
For now, the microgrid is powered by solar. However, in the longer term, the team hopes their efforts can help renewable energy power the entire U of R campus.
'[This] allows, like a sandbox environment for small and medium sized enterprises to use, as well as larger utilities like SaskPower, to test out or model,' Gregory Mack, the director of research partnerships and innovation explained.
'It's very useful and they can work with professors and students on campus.'
Based on the lifespan of the solar cells and the lithium-ion batteries – the microgrid is expected to keep on producing energy with its current set-up for approximately 20 years.

City removes 2-hour evening parking restriction, pushes for app use

The City of Edmonton has removed the two-hour parking restriction on evenings and weekends so customers can park for longer while supporting local businesses. (CTV News Edmonton/Evan Kenny) As of July 1, the city has removed the two-hour parking restriction on evenings and weekends so customers can park for a longer duration while supporting local businesses. The move comes after public outcry, where many said two hours wasn't long enough. 'We heard that two hours was not enough time to park, go to a show, go and actually have dinner, maybe go check out some other businesses in the area,' said Jenny Albers, acting director of traffic operations with the City of Edmonton. EPARKAPP Jenny Albers, acting director of traffic operations with the City of Edmonton, is seen on July 4, 2025. (CTV News Edmonton/Evan Kenny) 'In removing that two-hour time limit in the evenings and weekends, now residents have the ability to park for longer and enjoy more of the amenities in the area.' The two-hour restriction has been removed on all EPark zones on Mondays to Fridays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Albers said the two-hour restriction is still in place during the day on weekdays to ensure parking turnover. The city began the process of removing physical parking machines in April, switching to a mobile-only payment system. The outdated machines would cost the city $2.8 million to upgrade to enable chip and pin payment methods. Albers said the city's information line 311 received over 400 public inquiries regarding the machine removal in April and about 500 in June. 'For some Edmontonians who have used EPark machines for quite a lot of time, it's a significant change,' said Albers. 'However, we do have a lot of users that have already been using the HotSpot app or the QR code. Tyler Wagner-Joseph said the HotSpot app has been an easier way for him to pay for parking, but it's also nice to be able to get rid of some change. 'You don't have to stand there … when I go out for dinner, I can just do it when I'm at the table,' said Wagner-Joseph. 'And it's good because it saves your payments.' But Ward Dene Coun. Aaron Paquette said he's heard from constituents about functionality issues with the app that have been confusing for people. 'The people of Edmonton just want to use something that's functional,' said Paquette at city hall Friday. 'If they have to transfer over to this, I think it's incumbent on the organization to make sure that it's seamless, painless and that it works as advertised.' Although there have been some issues with the HotSpot app, Paquette said city administration has been 'diligent' in making improvements. New parking app launched by Montreal mobility agency

Drivers who use their smartphones to pay for parking in Montreal are being urged to download the new Sustainable Mobility Agency's parking app, as the old app is being phased out. The old version will no longer be functional as of July 31. The agency recently introduced the Mobicité app, which replaces the current P$ Mobile Service app and allows users to easily and securely pay for street parking and spots in many agency-managed lots using their mobile devices. 'With Mobicité, we are acquiring a real asset that supports our mission: making space-sharing more equitable and improving accessibility across the city for everyone,' the agency said in a statement. 'The Agency's mobile app, which already has more than 800,000 users, has been recognized as a valuable tool to better inform the public—especially drivers—by helping them make better decisions and encouraging them to adopt new behaviours for more sustainable mobility.' The new app includes similar features to the old one but adds a map that shows all paid parking managed by the agency, along with accessible parking spots and electric vehicle charging stations. It does not, however, display real-time availability of parking spaces. The agency said it will continue to enhance the app over time with new features based on users' needs. Users have until Dec. 15 to download their transaction history from the P$ Mobile Service app by accessing their account on the Montreal Sustainable Mobility Agency's website. The Mobicité app is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.
