Key Updates in AxSpA From EULAR 2025

Medscape07-07-2025
Key updates in therapies for axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) from the 2025 European Congress of Rheumatology (EULAR) annual meeting are reported by Dr Philip Mease of Providence Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.
Dr Mease opens by reporting on 3-year data for bimekizumab in patients with active AxSpA. Results from the phase 3 BE MOBILE 1, 2, and an open-label extension study, BE MOVING, demonstrated sustained clinical responses for up to 3 years, in which 60% of patients achieved low disease activity. Additionally, a parallel study confirmed sustained improvements in patient-reported outcomes.
He then comments on the German RABBIT registry, which addresses the need to define difficult-to-manage (D2M) and treatment-refractory (TR) subgroups within AxSpA. Results demonstrated that D2M-AxSpA patients are often female, HLA-B27 negative, and have more peripheral symptoms, while TR-AxSpA patients are defined by active inflammation on MRI.
Next, Dr Mease highlights the Bechterew-App trial, which investigated the efficacy of Axia, a new digital therapeutic (DTx) for patients with AxSpA. The trial concluded that the DTx provided significant benefit in disease activity, functional status, and disease-specific quality of life in AxSpA patients whose pharmacotherapy was stable.
Finally, Dr Mease details a novel, highly selective immunotherapy targeting problematic T cells (TRBV9+) in AxSpA and celiac disease, suggesting a potential cell-therapy approach for AxSpA patients.

US FAA not considering replacing L3Harris, Verizon contracts with Musk's Starlink

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Federal Aviation Administration told lawmakers it is not considering replacing its current telecommunication contracts it holds with L3Harris or Verizon Communications with Elon Musk's SpaceX's Starlink satellite unit. "The FAA is not aware of any effort by SpaceX to assume the (telecommunications) contracts. Nor has FAA considered replacing the awardees of those contracts with SpaceX," said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford in a letter to lawmakers dated Tuesday reviewed by Reuters. "FAA would not use Starlink (or any satellite service) as the sole communications technology for safety-critical air traffic services."

RFK Jr. fires 2 top aides at HHS in staff shakeup

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has fired two of his top aides. The biographies of Heather Flick Melanson, his chief of staff, and Hannah Anderson, deputy chief of staff of policy, are no longer pictured on the department's leadership page. "Secretary Kennedy has made a leadership change within the Immediate Office of the Secretary," an HHS spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "Effective immediately, Matt Buckham will serve as Acting Chief of Staff." "Mr. Buckham currently serves as the Kennedy's White House liaison at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he oversees the recruitment and onboarding of political appointees across the agency. He brings valuable experience in personnel strategy and organizational management to this new role," the spokesperson added. "Secretary Kennedy thanks the outgoing leadership for their service and looks forward to working closely with Mr. Buckham as the Department continues advancing its mission to Make America Healthy Again," the spokesperson also said. Melanson is a lawyer who previously served in multiple top roles at HHS during the first Trump administration. She previously was HHS' acting general counsel before becoming its acting secretary for administration and then eventually a senior adviser to then-HHS Secretary Alex Azar. Prior to joining HHS for the first time, Flick was an attorney at Dhillon Law Group, a firm founded by Harmeet Dhillon, who Trump has tapped this time around to be his assistant attorney general. "Heather Flick is outstanding and will most definitely help soon to be Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.," former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn said in a post on X after news of Flick's new role.

Muni Investors Brace for Hospital-Bond Pain From Medicaid Cuts

President Donald Trump's budget bill has municipal-bond investors bracing for mounting financial strains on hospitals and health-care systems amid estimates that the legislation could push millions of Americans off their health insurance. Trump's $3.4 trillion tax and spending package makes substantial cuts to Medicaid, the public health-insurance program for low-income and disabled people. Republicans are also mulling deeper reductions to Medicaid in a follow-up bill.
