CJ Hester, John Volker give Michigan football two new running backs via transfer portal

For the second time in 48 hours, the Michigan football team has added to its running back corps.
First, Saturday evening, UMass transfer CJ Hester made his pledge to join the Wolverines, which he shared on social media. Assistant coach Tony Alford's running back room had dwindled to two primary options − Jordan Marshall and Alabama transfer Justice Haynes − after Ben Hall's decision to enter the portal earlier this month.

"Beyond blessed to announce my commitment to the University of Michigan!," Hester posted with a picture alongside coach Sherrone Moore. "Thank you to everyone who's supported me on this journey. Maize and Blue, let's work! #GoBlue #Committed."
Hester began his career at Western Michigan in 2023 − U-M's now defensive line coach Lou Esposito was the defensive coordinator at the time − and ran 29 times for 124 yards (4.3 yards per carry) and a pair of touchdowns. Then a season ago he transferred to UMass, where as a sophomore he rushed 119 times for 529 yards (4.4 yards per attempt) and four touchdowns.
New offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey has also been known to use his backs out of the backfield in the passing game and Hester flashed a bit of that ability, too, with 14 catches for 58 yards for the Minutemen. Hester, a Cincinnati native (Wyoming High School), shares a hometown with Marshall and now also a potential role in the backfield.

U-M locked up the commitment after he visited Ann Arbor this weekend during the spring game.
The Wolverines weren't done there. On Monday afternoon they added former Princeton running back John Volker. An incoming graduate student, Volker spent the past four years at Princeton, where his playing time grew each year.
A 6-foot, 210-pound back from Fair Haven, New Jersey (Rumson-Fair Haven Regional), he ran 245 times for 1,183 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns. In 2024 was likely his best season, when he had 89 carries for 514 yards (5.8 per rush) and six scores, including a career-long 75 yard rush as he was named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League.
Like Hester, he also has decent hands coming out of the backfield, catching 31 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns at Princeton.

Fun fact: His brother, Charlie, also played football at Princeton but is now on the United States Bobsled team.

Mandatory Credit: David Reginek-Imagn Images The post Kings officially complete Dennis Schroder sign-and-trade with Pistons appeared first on ClutchPoints. As guard Dennis Schroder signed with the Sacramento Kings on a $45 million deal, the terms of the situation became more clear in how the Detroit Pistons were involved. ClutchPoints' NBA insider Brett Siegel would report that the Kings signing Schroder would come with a sign-and-trade including the Pistons, which has now been made official. Advertisement The news would be confirmed by Siegel on Monday and, the deal was 'changed four different times,' but it will ultimately be a sign-and-trade. 'Are you all finally ready for the confirmation? Dennis Schroder is heading to the Kings by way of a sign-and-trade, multiple league sources have confirmed to ClutchPoints,' Siegel wrote on X, formerly Twitter. 'This changed four different times, but it has finally been decided that this deal will be a S&T.' Schroder was with three teams last season, starting with the Brooklyn Nets, then being dealt to the Golden State Warriors in December before being traded to the Detroit Pistons before the deadline. The financial aftermath of the Kings getting Dennis Schroder Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images With the Kings involved in rumors for Jonathan Kuminga and other players, the addition of Schroder is an interesting one, as the team gets a veteran point guard who could fill a role easily. Siegel would give insight into the financial ramifications of the deal, saying that to take on the contract of the 31-year-old, the team will be utilizing Kevin Hueter's $16.8 million exception. Advertisement 'The Kings are using their Huerter $16.8M exception to take on Schroder's contract,' Siegel wrote on the social media platform X. 'Detroit creates about a $14.8M TPE that can be utilized over the next year at the cost of a second-round pick. Kings will keep their MLE intact.' Last season through three teams, Schroder would average 13.1 points, 5.4 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game while shooting 40.6 percent from the field and 34.2 percent from beyond the arc. Sacramento looks to improve after finishing with a 40-42, which put them ninth in the Western Conference. Pistons' Trajan Langdon reveals Cade Cunningham's MVP goal

The post Pistons' Trajan Langdon reveals Cade Cunningham's MVP goal appeared first on ClutchPoints. Next season will be big for Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons. So much so that team president Trajan Langdon had a strong MVP case to make for the rising star guard. Advertisement Cunningham is coming off the first All-Star selection of his career as he landed on the All-NBA Third Team. He also led the Pistons to their first playoff appearance since 2019, showing how his talent is crucial to the team's growth. Langdon appeared for an interview during Friday's Summer League matchup between the Pistons and New York Knicks. It was there when he explained why Cunningham would be in the mix for the MVP award for next season and the long term. 'MVP is something he wants to strive for,' Langdon said. What lies ahead for Cade Cunningham, Pistons Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images It's an interesting take for Trajan Langdon to have about Cade Cunningham with the case for MVP. But it makes sense considering how much the Pistons have improved with Cunningham growing his game year after year. Advertisement This past season saw Cunningham average 26.1 points, 9.1 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game after 70 appearances. He shot 46.9% from the field, including 35.6% from beyond the arc. He maintained his level of play in his postseason debut, putting up 25 points, 8.7 assists, 8.3 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 1.3 blocks per contest. With the Eastern Conference wide open next season due to injuries, this presents a big opportunity for the Pistons to make noise. They showed in the playoffs that they can compete with the best in the conference. Detroit has played with a chip on its shoulder as they haven't earned the championship contention status since the mid-2000s. They now have the underdog status, but that doesn't mean opponents should underestimate them as Cunningham will make sure of that next season. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya) DETROIT (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs to move within one of Barry Bonds' 2001 record for homers before the All-Star break, and the Seattle Mariners beat Detroit 12-3 on Friday night to end Tarik Skubal's three-month unbeaten streak. Raleigh — in the lineup as designated hitter — made it 5-3 on a solo shot in the eighth inning, then hit a grand slam in a seven-run ninth. He broke the American League record for homers before the break of 37 set by Reggie Jackson in 1969 and matched by Chris Davis in 2013. Advertisement Skubal (10-3) was 10-0 with a 1.62 ERA in 16 starts since losing 3-2 to the Mariners in Seattle on April 2. He allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, striking out five. Luis Castillo (6-5) got the win, giving up three runs in five innings. Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the third when center fielder Parker Meadows dove for Donovan Solano's sinking liner and missed. It rolled to the wall for an RBI triple. ach McKinstry tied it with a fourth-inning single. J.P. Crawford's two-out RBI single made it 2-1 in the fifth, and Rodríguez followed with a two-run homer over the Seattle bullpen in left-center field. Advertisement Riley Greene's RBI triple got the major league-leading Tigers to 4-2 in the sixth, and Spencer Torkelson followed with a sacrifice fly. Key moment Nine of Seattle's first 10 batters reached base in the ninth inning, leading manager A.J. Hinch to insert catcher Jake Rogers for his third career pitching appearance. He retired two of the three batters he faced to escape the inning. Key stat Skubal started on four days rest in order to get an extra day off before the All-Star Game. In his career, he's 14-15 with a 3.98 ERA on four days of rest, but 37-16 with a 2.68 ERA on five or more. The biggest difference comes in walks (2.6 per nine as opposed to 1.6) and homers (1.4 per nine as opposed to 0.8). Up next Tigers All-Star RHP Casey Mize (9-2, 2.63) was set to face RHP George Kirby (3-4, 4.22) on Saturday. ___ AP MLB:
