Countdown to Kickoff: Zach Wood is the Saints Player of Day 49
We have less than 50 days before the New Orleans Saints embark on their 59th NFL season with a regular season opener at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Wearing No. 49 for new coach Kellen Moore's crew is an underappreciated member of the roster, long snapper Zach Wood. Entering his ninth season with New Orleans, Wood is one of the longest-tenured Saints and longest-tenured long snappers in the NFL. Our Saints Player of the Day, here's a deeper dive into his background.
At Rowlett High School, Wood was an honorable mention all-state defensive tackle before committing to Southern Methodist University. As a defensive end in a 3-4 front for the Mustangs, Wood started 33 contests over his last three seasons. He gathered 8.5 sacks and forced 2 fumbles while also blocking 4 kicks and serving as the team's long snapper.
After not being selected in the 2016 NFL draft, Wood was signed to an undrafted deal by the Dallas Cowboys. He didn't make the Dallas roster as a defensive lineman, but was brought back the following offseason on a reserve/future contract as a long snapper. Wood was again cut by the Cowboys at the conclusion of the preseason. This time, he was picked up by Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints.
Wood won the long snapper job with New Orleans after a tryout. He'd remain in that role for the last 132 consecutive games. Wood has been one of the league's most consistent players at his often overlooked position. In 2022, he earned 2nd Team All-Pro recognition from Pro Football Focus. After a series of one-year contracts, New Orleans awarded him for his consistently with a four-year deal in 2023. There are a lot of questions surrounding the Saints roster heading into this season. However, long snapper is not one of those positions, thanks to the capabilities of Zach Wood.

He played 14 years in the NFL and made one Pro Bowl. Peters had a 13-year NFL career from 2010-2022. He spent 2015-2021 with the Cardinals. He had 135 total starts but did not make a Pro Bowl. Dansby was an interesting player. He never made the Pro Bowl, but statistically he could make a case for the Hall of Fame. He won't make it because he never was a Pro Bowler, but he had 20 interceptions and 43 sacks in his career. His 2013 season should have gotten more Defensive Player of the Year consideration (122 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 12 QB hits, an incredible 19 pass breakups and four interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. In his 14-year career, he played eight for the Cardinals, from 2004-2009, then again in 2013 and again in 2017 to close out his career. Dustin Poirier: 'I feel appreciated. I feel seen'
For one final time, Dustin Poirier left it all inside the Octagon. "The Diamond" lost his retirement match to rival Max Holloway Saturday night at UFC 318 from New Orleans, Louisiana. Poirier, a former interim UFC champion, had announced the bout would be his last weeks before it took place. The promotion was able to have the card in Louisiana, his home state. "I feel appreciated. I feel seen. I never stepped outside of fighting and looked at it this way. I never got to look at it third person. "This week has been incredible. I feel loved by the fans, Louisiana and the company. I'm a kid living the dream out here." Poirier had won the first two meetings with Holloway, scoring a decision in 2019 and a submission win back in 2012. He ends his career with a record of 30-10 with one no-contest, earning 15 knockouts and eight submission victories.
