More details have come to light about Betsy Arakawa's health in the time leading up to her death.
After Gene Hackman and his wife of 33 years were found dead inside their Santa Fe home, authorities found that Arakawa had fluid in her lungs, according to her autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press.
The report, released April 29, showed that the 65-year-old had fluid accumulated in her chest, as well as mild hardening of the vessels that supply blood to the heart and body, per the outlet. The documents confirmed that she tested negative for COVID and the flu, her carbon monoxide levels were within a normal range and she showed no signs of trauma.
Arakawa's cause of death was found to be hantavirus pulmonary syndrome—a respiratory illness that is transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents—the documents confirmed.
Previously, officials had found evidence of dead and live rodents across eight buildings on their sprawling property, according to Department of Public Health records, per CNN.

While their primary residence—where the bodies of Arakawa and Hackman and one of their dogs' bodies were found—didn't show signs of rodent activity, investigators also found nests and feces across their three garages, two casitas and three sheds.
After Arakawa's death, Hackman, 95, died of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributing factor, according to a postmortem examination from the Office of the Medical Investigator obtained by NBC News.
After their bodies were discovered, the couple's loved ones shared that they believe Arakawa, who was also Hackman's caretaker, likely didn't realize how sick she was. After all, only 122 cases of hantavirus were reported in New Mexico from 1993 to 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"I'm sure if Betsy knew how sick she was, she would've had some backup help," Stephen Marshall speculated in the Last Days of Gene Hackman: ABC News Special documentary. "She probably thought she was going to get better. She wasn't worried about herself. She was worried about taking care of Gene."
Indeed, the couple's friends emphasized that Arakawa and Hackman, who wed in 1991, had a romance made for the silver screen.
"He was a gentle giant, very calm," Kevin Bobolosky said of Hackman in the special. "Betsy, I think, mostly did all the cooking and cleaning on this big estate out of love. She just adored him. So they had everything they wanted."

17 Divisive Foods People Absolutely Hate And Refuse To Eat — And Honestly, It's Sooo Controversial

Even if a food tastes good, sometimes the texture is just an obstacle one cannot overcome — and that's okay. Recently, Redditor u/applefrickinsauce asked those in the Reddit community to share the foods they refuse to eat because of the texture, and, you know what? Fair. Here are the foods people 100% won't eat: 1."Cottage cheese. The curds are gross." —myweedylawnsucks "Something about it being lumpy really sets my brain off. Like, 'Milk stuff isn't supposed to be lumpy! Don't eat it!'" —Hailstorm303 2."Mushy peas. I was forced to eat them at my primary school. Even now, the smell of them makes me gag." —Top-View7248 3."Snails. Slimy bastards, they are." —Jazzlike-Basil1355 4."Fatty meat and cartilage. The texture makes me gag big time." —ShinyVanillite 5."Ketchup. I hate the way it smells and the way it separates when you wash it off of plates." —Ok_Wallaby_8001 6."Raw tomatoes! I love tomato sauce, tomato paste, tomato soup, and anything else made from tomatoes. But I won't eat raw tomatoes on my sandwiches or in salads." —GoodFriday10 7."Oysters." —Jura1575 8."Eggplant. It's so spongy and fibrous." —NoseInternational794 9."Figs. The inside is too insect-y for me." —fujoshikimchi 10."Liver and onions. Whenever my parents made it for dinner, I'd go to my friend's house." —Massive_Garage7454 11."Chicken wings and ribs. The bones and everything..." —AAEgurl26 12."I cannot stand mushrooms. They smell so awful, and the texture is just disgusting." —Financial-Job4779 13."Tripe. It's like eating bits of slimy towel." —Difficult_Carob7063 14."Lima beans have this weird, chalky, powdery texture that makes me skin crawl. Even thinking about biting into one makes me shudder. As a kid, my mom would try sneaking them into soups and casseroles, but I'd always spot them and pick them out. The texture is like eating wet sand, and I just can't deal with it." —PerfectCutie_ 15."Durian." —davidicon168 "I recently tried durian for the first time. Really couldn't get past the smell. The flavor and texture were not helpful, either. Zero stars." —12Wanderful 16."Pears. They're always gritty and sandy." —spidergirl79 "Eggs. They disgust me, and they've disgusted me since I was a kid. I'm in my 30s now, and I haven't eaten eggs for as long as I can remember. People find it weird, but eggs smell like farts, and they're slimy and gelatinous. I find them completely repulsive. I don't care about eating stuff where eggs are used as an ingredient like pasta or baked goods, but eating eggs alone is, in my mind, roughly equivalent to eating a turd. My fiancée used to love them, but she's vegan now, and our household is one of the very few that hasn't been worried about egg prices this year (which is nice, at least)." —WrestleSocietyXShill For me, the food that I can't eat due to the texture is OATMEAL! I hate how goopy and bland it is, and not even adding toppings helps. What's a food you refuse to eat because of the texture or smell? 18 Things That Are Actually Really Healthy, Despite Many People Thinking They're Not

I don't know about you, but it feels like there's a new health fad every week. First, there was intermittent fasting, then there was keto, and now, people are arguing about seed oils. I'm struggling to keep up. With so many narratives about certain things being "bad" for you, I'm starting to forget that some of that just isn't true. Luckily, I stumbled upon one Reddit thread (which you can see here), where people listed the "unhealthy" things that are actually really good for you, and it's a refreshing reminder. Related: Here are 18 things that are perfectly healthy and fine to do, despite some people thinking otherwise: Everything in moderation is key. 1."Doing nothing. Having a moment of silence." –Turtleballoon123 2."Put the baby on the floor. Babies don't always need to be in a bouncer, swing, jumper, walker, rocker, chair, etc. They do great on the floor in a safe space." –SleepXParalysis 3."It is really healthy to process some emotions and thoughts on your own. The people who have the most peace and clarity are people who can sort, experience, sit in, and evaluate their feelings without having to put it out to other people for other people to tell them what to think, feel, and do." –OptmstcExstntlst 4."Frozen vegetables. It's seen as cheap and not as good as fresh, when in fact, it's almost always healthier than 'fresh' vegetables." –Hufe Related: 5."You do not have to show up to every argument you are invited to." –Bravely_Default 6."Sleeping all day when you're exhausted. As my trainer says: If you're actually falling asleep, you clearly needed it." –EndlesslyUnfinished 7."Potatoes. It's the oil and what we do to them that makes them high in calories and unhealthy." –yamammiwammi 8."Popcorn. Without all the artificial butter flavorings and low-quality oils, of course. Popcorn is a whole grain, and super high in fiber. As far as snacks go, it's about as good as it gets." –Its_Waffle Related: 9."Being around dirt. Especially for kids. Exposure to a natural, somewhat dirty environment helps your immune system develop properly, which in turn helps reduce the chance of developing allergies or immune system diseases, and even reduces some mental health issues." –the_original_retro 10."Salt. It's been demonized by the 'health' industry for years, but it is WILDLY necessary for damn near everything in your body." –Secret-Spinach-5080 11."Having fat in your body, not an excessive amount, though. You don't need to be ripped with a completely flat stomach to be healthy." –PlasticScheme3609 12."Chocolate.... the right kind. Dark chocolate with 80% or more cocoa has massive amounts of extremely healthy stuff in it. It makes your body release stem cells in the blood, which repair almost everything." –BubiMannKuschelForce 13."Being angry. It's as valid an emotion as any, and sometimes you just need to be angry and let it out. Reacting in anger is never a good thing, though." –TheYankunian Related: 14."Saying no to children and letting them feel sadness sometimes so they can appreciate joy eventually." "My mother-in-law's grandchildren are so spoiled that nothing can make them happy; they are completely self-absorbed and never say a thank you, and they can get absolutely anything they want anytime. I've never seen children like that, and I believe that while she has good intentions, this might be harmful later." –cesonis 15."Giving your body a chance to fight off minor illnesses before turning immediately to antibiotics/virals. Like no, don't let that dog bite fester your arm right off your shoulder, but if you can walk through the sinus infection with a bottle of NyQuil, do that." –alphaturducken 16."Playing video games in moderation." –AromaticHydrocarbons 17."Not showering every day (you can wash sensitive spots every day, though, if you want to, that's understandable)." –Seirazula 18."Fruit. There are people out there who think fruit has too much sugar 🙄 " "I had a woman who full-on believed this sentence. She said, 'I'm being bad and getting a banana, it's my sugary treat.' BE SO REAL RN OMFG. Sugar isn't the enemy people!!! Moderation and sugar that our body can process easily is the key. Honey, maple syrup, sugar in fruit, and less processed/not bleached sugar are fine! Pure cane sugar is yummy, your generic sugar has so much stuff in it, the less processed (processed isn't bad since we need some of it), the better!" –MrCabrera0695 What else belongs on this list? Israel's military says airdrops of aid will begin in Gaza as hunger grows

Deadly Israeli gunfire was reported twice close to the Zikim crossing with Israel in the north. In the first incident, at least a dozen people waiting for aid trucks were killed, said staff at Shifa hospital, where bodies were taken. Israel's military said it fired warning shots to distance a crowd 'in response to an immediate threat.' A witness, Sherif Abu Aisha, said people started running when they saw a light that they thought was from aid trucks, but as they got close, they realized it was Israel's tanks. That's when the army started firing, he told The Associated Press. He said his uncle was among those killed. 'We went because there is no food ... and nothing was distributed,' he said. On Saturday evening, Israeli forces killed at least 11 people and wounded 120 others when they fired toward crowds who tried to get food from an entering U.N. convoy, Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiyah, director of Shifa hospital, told the AP. 'We are expecting the numbers to surge in the next few hours,' he said. There was no immediate military comment. AP video showed a group of weary Palestinian men carrying a body along with sacks of flour. They said he was hit by a truck but had no details. 'You die to fetch some food for your children,' said one man, Fayez Abu Riyala, thin and sweating. In the southern city of Khan Younis, Israeli forces shot dead at least nine people trying to get aid entering through the Morag corridor, according to the hospital's morgue records. There was no immediate military comment. Elsewhere, those killed in strikes included four people in an apartment building in Gaza City and at least eight, including four children, in the crowded tent camp of Muwasi in Khan Younis, hospitals said. The airdrops were requested by neighboring Jordan, and a Jordanian official said they mainly will drop food and milk formula. The United Arab Emirates said airdrops would start 'immediately.' Britain said it plans to work with partners to airdrop aid and evacuate children requiring medical assistance.
