Kai Asakura returns at UFC 319 vs. Tim Elliott
Former RIZIN superstar Kai Asakura has the opportunity to bounce back.
At UFC 319, Asakura (21-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) will make his second promotional appearance vs. Tim Elliott (20-13-1 MMA, 9-11 UFC) in a three-round flyweight bout. The event takes place Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago and is headlined by Dricus Du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev.
Both fighters recently announced the booking on social media. The fight was first reported by X user @realkevin.
Asakura, 31, signed with the UFC in 2024 and debuted in a title fight vs. champion Alexandre Pantoja, which he lost by second-round submission. Prior to his UFC onboarding, however, Asakura built his brand in his home country of Japan as one of its biggest stars. His only losses prior to Pantoja were to Kyoji Horiguchi, Manel Kape, and Hiromasa Ougikubo. All three of those fighters Asakura also holds wins over.
Elliott, 38, hasn't competed since a December 2023 submission win over Su Mudaerji. The victory was his third in four fights. Elliott was scheduled to compete vs. Tatsuro Taira in May 2024 but withdrew.

Loopy Godinez: Jessica Andrade 'biggest fight of my career,' but a favorable one
Loopy Godinez is confident she can capitalize on the opportunity of facing a former champion at UFC 319. Godinez (13-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) takes on ex-UFC strawweight title holder Jessica Andrade (26-14 MMA, 17-12 UFC) on Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). After back-to-back losses to Virna Jandiroba and Mackenzie Dern, Godinez rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Julia Polastri at UFC on ESPN 64 in March. She thinks a win over Andrade will propel her a big step forward in her career. "Definitely, I'm really excited for this fight. I think it's also a great matchup for us," Godinez told MMA Junkie Radio. "It's a big, big opportunity, and it's also the biggest fight of my career." Andrade has struggled as of late, with five loss in her past seven bouts. Godinez thinks the Brazilian powerhouse's walk forward style will play into her favor. "She's well-rounded, and her power, she's really strong," Godinez said. "Honestly, we've been working really hard in every area. Everywhere the fight goes, we will have an answer. ... I think I have more tools to use when someone is aggressive and coming forward. She likes her hooks, that gives me a lot of space for my work, and I really believe this is a great matchup for me." UFC's Nora Cornolle: Kayla Harrison 'difficult to beat' but 'not complete' fighter
LAS VEGAS – Like every other competitor in the UFC women's bantamweight division, Nora Cornolle is hunting current champ Kayla Harrison. Cornolle (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is currently ranked No. 12 by the promotion, and hopes to crack into the top 10 with a win over Karol Rosa at UFC on ESPN 71 at the UFC Apex on Saturday. Rosa (18-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) currently holds that tenth spot. Every woman in the division is chasing Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who won the division's title in June by submitting Julianna Peña at UFC 316. "She's going to be the woman to kill now, like every girl in the top 10, you know?" Cornolle told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday's media day. "I think everybody wants to call her out. I'm not in a hurry. I want the belt, of course, like every female in this category, but step by step." Cornolle, 35, is just entering her fifth fight in the UFC. Harrison claimed the division's title in her third bout, so Cornolle knows the road to the title can be a very quick one. While she says she's not in a hurry to get to a title shot, she has been studying Harrison's game, and sees a path to victory. "She's not complete," Cornolle said. "She has stuff where she's really good at, and maybe difficult to beat in her own game I will say, but there is a way to beat her." First things first, Cornolle has to get past Rosa, who has produced mixed results through her UFC run, but has never lost back-to-back fights – and she's entering this fight after a decision loss to Ailin Perez in January. Check out Cornolle's full media day interview in the video above.
