Last Canadian falls at Wimbledon as Dabrowski ousted from women's doubles competition

LONDON – Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand were eliminated from the Wimbledon women's doubles tournament Tuesday with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) quarterfinal loss to Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova.
The No. 2 seeds defended just one of the three break points they faced against Belgium's Mertens and Russia's Kudermetova.
The eighth-seeded team of Mertens and Kudermetova also out-aced Dabrowski and Routliffe 7-2.
Dabrowski and Routliffe reached the final at the All England Club last year, but the 2023 U.S. Open champions fell to Kateřina Siniaková of Czechia and Taylor Townsend of the United States.
The 33-year-old Dabrowski also lost in the championship game at the grass-court Grand Slam in 2019 with then-partner Xu Yifan of China.

Summer McIntosh falls just short to Katie Ledecky in ‘race of this century' to take bronze at swim worlds

SINGAPORE— Summer McIntosh isn't inevitable, but she can feel that way. The Canadian came into this meet holding three world records, which she set in five days last month. She came a blink from setting a fourth record at the world championships, on the way to her third gold here in Singapore. But Saturday night was the climb into swimming Valhalla: the 800-metre freestyle against American icon Katie Ledecky. This was the race. Katie Ledecky had lost the 800 once when she was 13, once to McIntosh at a minor meet, and in fact she has barely been challenged. Ledecky has left so much swimming flotsam in her wake. She breaks you. Opinion articles are based on the author's interpretations and judgments of facts, data and events. More details

Ledecky wins 800-metre freestyle at world swim championship, McIntosh takes bronze

SINGAPORE – Canada's Summer McIntosh took the bronze medal in the 800-metre freestyle at the world swim championship in a three-way duel to the finish. The Toronto teenager, Olympic champion Katie Ledecky of the United States and Lani Pallister of the Australia battled from start to finish with Ledecky claiming her seventh world title in the distance. McIntosh seeking a fourth straight gold medal in Singapore ran second to the American star before making her move on the final turn for a brief lead. But Ledecky surged and delivered the knockout punch over the final 50 metres with Pallister closing fast behind her. Ledecky finished in eight minutes, 5.62 seconds with Pallister less than four-tenths of a second behind. McIntosh touched the wall 1.67 seconds after Ledecky. Canada has now won seven medals at the world aquatics championships — six in swimming and one in diving. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 2, 2025.
