SIT to probe illegal mining into remaining fields of Thadagam valley
S Muralidharan, a petitioner and Chennai-based activist, told TNIE that the hundreds and thousands of acres of areas were illegally mined in the Thadagam valley. The Madras High court should punish the illegal brickkiln owners and revenue and mining officials who issued licence but failed to monitor the indiscriminate mining that resulted in environmental degradation and an increase in human-animal conflict.
"Punishing the government officials will set an example and help protect the environment and wildlife in future," said Muralidharan.
S Ganesh of Thadagam Valley Protection Committee said "These brickkiln units are located very close to the foothills of the Western Ghats and an important elephant corridor has been there for over the last 25 years. Out of the 806 brickkiln fields in five villages in the Thadagam valley, the joint committee has submitted a report after conducting field visits only in 565 fields and found illegal mining in up to 433 villages. The SIT will investigate the 241 remaining fields at Nanjundapuram, Veerapandi and Chinna Thadagam villages in the Thadagam valley."
"These units have mined excessive soil and created a roadblock for free animal movement, thus resulting in elephant forays into residential areas and agricultural fields. If the SIT probe is not satisfactory, we will pray the Madras High Court to hand over the investigation into the illegal brickkiln units, which are sealed now, to the CBI if the revenue, mining and police personnel fail to stop those taking machines or soil, etc., from the sealed units," said Ganesh.
The court has also appointed D Shanmugapriya, SP, CB-CID, Chennai, to head the SIT replacing G Nagajothi, the SP of the State Crime Records Bureau since Nagajothi was on continuous leave due to her husband's death.

The social media accounts of several Pakistani celebrities were geo-blocked again on Thursday (July 3, 2025), hours after they became briefly accessible to users in India — a development that had triggered sharp reactions across social media platforms. Some of the previously restricted profiles became visible on Wednesday (July 2, 2025), reportedly due to a technical glitch. However, following the issue being brought to the attention of the authorities, the content was once again geo-restricted and is no longer accessible in India. In the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had recommended the blocking of 16 YouTube channels based in Pakistan. These were accused of disseminating provocative and communally sensitive content, false narratives, and misinformation targeting India, its armed forces, and security agencies. The list of banned YouTube channels includes prominent media outlets such as Dawn News, ARY News, Samaa TV, Bol News, and Geo News, along with other channels such as Irshad Bhatti, Raftar, The Pakistan Reference, Samaa Sports, GNN, Uzair Cricket, Umar Cheema Exclusive, Asma Shirazi, Muneeb Farooq, Suno News, and Raazi Naama. In addition, the social media profiles of Pakistani public figures — including actors Mahira Khan, Saba Qamar, Ahad Raza Mir, Danish Taimoor, Yumna Zaidi, Fawad Khan, Mawra Hocane, and Hania Aamir — as well as cricketers such as Shahid Afridi, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Wasim Akram, Shan Masood, Hasan Ali, Naseem Shah, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, and Shoaib Akhtar — remain geo-blocked in India. Further, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued an advisory to over-the-top (OTT) platforms, media streaming services, and digital intermediaries in India, instructing them to discontinue web series, films, songs, podcasts, and other forms of media content originating from Pakistan. The advisory cited national security considerations, stating, 'Several terrorist attacks in India have been established to have cross-border linkages with Pakistan-based state and non-state actors... On April 22, the terrorist attack in Pahalgam led to the killing of several Indians, one Nepali citizen, and injuries to a number of others...'. Quoting Part III of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the Ministry underscored the responsibilities of content publishers on OTT platforms. It also referenced Rule 3(1)(b) of Part II of the IT Rules, 2021, which stipulates that intermediaries must ensure that users do not upload or share content that 'threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of India, friendly relations with foreign States, or public order'.

Iran Committed To Non-Proliferation Treaty, Foreign Minister Says
Dubai: Iran remains committed to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and its safeguards agreement, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Thursday, a day after Tehran enacted a law suspending cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog. "Our cooperation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) will be channeled through Iran's Supreme National Security Council for obvious safety and security reasons," Araqchi wrote in a post on X. President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday enacted the legislation passed by parliament last week to suspend cooperation with the IAEA, a move the U.S. called "unacceptable." Araqchi's comment on X was in response to a call from Germany's Foreign Ministry urging Tehran to reverse its decision to shelve cooperation with the IAEA. Araqchi accused Germany of "explicit support for Israel's unlawful attack on Iran, including safeguarded nuclear sites". Iran has accused the IAEA of siding with Western countries and providing a justification for Israel's June 13-24 airstrikes on Iranian nuclear installations, which began a day after the U.N. agency's board of governors voted to declare Tehran in violation of its obligations under the NPT. Western powers have long suspected that Iran has sought to develop the means to build atomic bombs through its declared civilian atomic energy programme. Iran has repeatedly said it is enriching uranium only for peaceful nuclear ends. IAEA inspectors are mandated to ensure compliance with the NPT by seeking to verify that nuclear programmes in treaty countries are not diverted for military purposes. The law that went into effect on Wednesday mandates that any future inspection of Iranian nuclear sites by the IAEA needs approval by Tehran's Supreme National Security Council. "We are aware of these reports. The IAEA is awaiting further official information from Iran," the Vienna-based global nuclear watchdog said in a statement. U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told a regular briefing on Wednesday that Iran needed to cooperate fully with the IAEA without further delay.

All Pakistani X Handles Blocked In India, Ban On YouTube Channels Stays
New Delhi: All Pakistani accounts on X have been blocked in India after briefly being accessible in the past few days, official sources confirmed on Thursday. The move comes in continuation of India's escalating digital and diplomatic restrictions against Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 tourists were killed by terrorists affiliated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba's proxy, The Resistance Front. After the attack, India responded with a series of retaliatory measures, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and the launch of Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror launch pads inside Pakistan. Among the measures was a wide-reaching crackdown on Pakistani media and social media content -- encompassing accounts of actors, cricketers, and internet influencers -- across Instagram, X, YouTube, and other platforms. Although several of these accounts had recently become accessible again, prompting criticism and questions about their restoration, they are now re-blocked. When users in India try to access these profiles, they are met with a message stating: "Account Withheld. (Name of the account) has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand." On Wednesday, users briefly gained access to X and Instagram accounts of several Pakistani actors and internet personalities, including Mawra Hocane, Saba Qamar, Ahad Raza Mir, Yumna Zaidi, and Danish Taimoor, as well as YouTube channels run by former cricketers Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar. However, accounts belonging to Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, and Hania Aamir remained blocked throughout. Additionally, the ban on YouTube also remains, sources said. Earlier in May, the Indian government issued an advisory directing all OTT platforms and digital intermediaries to discontinue content originating from Pakistan. The advisory, dated May 8, 2025, and issued under the IT Rules, 2021, stated that "content hosted or streamed must not threaten India's sovereignty, integrity, national security, or public order." It explicitly instructed media platforms to remove "web-series, films, songs, podcasts and other streaming content" produced in Pakistan, whether on subscription-based or free platforms. Following the brief restoration of access to some Pakistani accounts, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) made an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding a total blackout of all Pakistani social media presence in India. The association called the visibility of such accounts an "insult to the sacrifice of our martyred soldiers" and an "emotional assault" on Indians who have lost loved ones to terror attacks orchestrated by Pakistan. Citing major terror incidents like 26/11, Pulwama, Uri, and the recent Pahalgam attack, AICWA labelled Pakistan a "terrorist nation" and condemned Pakistani artists who, according to them, have "shamelessly spoken against India instead of showing remorse." In their appeal, AICWA put forth three specific demands -- a complete digital blackout of all Pakistani accounts and media channels in India; a ban on all future collaborations or promotions involving Pakistani nationals; and a permanent cultural disconnect from Pakistan as a tribute to the Indian Armed Forces and the families of martyrs.
