How SDRs help Saudi investors access global markets
SDRs are financial instruments that allow investors in Saudi Arabia to access shares of international companies without owning the actual shares.
They are issued by a local financial institution or depositary bank in Saudi Arabia and represent a certain number of shares in a foreign company. Essentially, SDRs mirror the actual shares traded in the company's home market.
Listing SDRs on Tadawul can attract Saudi-based investors who want exposure to international markets without directly investing in foreign exchanges. This broader investor base can boost the company's market visibility and increase trading volumes.
These instruments are designed to facilitate cross-border investments, enabling Saudi-based investors to diversify their portfolios by investing in foreign companies while trading in their local currency and adhering to domestic regulatory frameworks.
SDRs are traded on Tadawul just like regular shares, making them accessible to local investors without the need to navigate the complexities of foreign markets.
SDRs offer several advantages that appeal to Saudi-based investors, including diversification benefits, easy access, tax advantages, liquidity, and transparency.
The appeal of SDRs ultimately depends on factors such as the company's performance, geopolitical issues, and market conditions.

At the Saudi Capital Forum in Riyadh last February, where BMG Financial Group and Dalipal Holdings Limited were sponsors, we discussed with Tadawul officials how Dalipal, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, could benefit from the issuance of SDRs once launched.
BMG and Dalipal have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore a dual listing and the issuance of SDRs.
For Dalipal, issuing SDRs will align with Vision 2030, enhance their global brand recognition, mitigate geopolitical risks, and improve liquidity.
It is also notable that Dalipal plans to expand its manufacturing facilities to produce advanced pipes for the oil, gas, and hydrogen sectors.
They are already preparing their site at King Salman Energy Park in Dammam, Eastern Province. Their SDRs are a link with Saudi investors, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that promotes cross-border investment and economic integration.
The SDRs initiative marks the debut of depository receipts in the Saudi financial market. It is seen as a strategic step toward reinforcing Riyadh's position as a global financial centre, in line with the country's Financial Sector Development Program.

FlyNow eCopters to take flight in Saudi Arabia soon
In a major step toward integrating flying taxis into daily transportation, Saudi Arabia is all set to produce thousands of eCopters, FlyNow Aviation's electric air vehicles, all of which will carry the 'Saudi Made' label, according to FlyNow Aviation's Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Yvonne Winter. The Austria-based FlyNow Aviation is working to set up the assembly plant and will start the production of the cargo version in 2027. Officially, FlyNow's eCopters are expected to transport the public during Riyadh Expo 2030. 'Additionally, test operations (sandbox flights) are planned for 2025 in Saudi Arabia to adapt the technology to local conditions,' Winter told Arab News. Speaking about the future of mobility in Saudi Arabia, she said: 'Saudi Arabia is not only transforming its economy — it is shaping the future of mobility for the entire world.' She added: 'Under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Vision 2030, the Kingdom is proving that bold ideas, advanced technology, and national pride can work hand in hand. We are honored to be part of this historic journey and proud to contribute to building Saudi-made solutions for global air mobility.' In May 2024, FlyNow Aviation signed a memorandum of understanding with the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the National Industrial Development Center, and the Sky Alliance for Automated Air Mobility. 'The cooperation aims to support the development of electric air mobility in Saudi Arabia, including regulations, airspace integration, vertiport infrastructure, and operational guidelines for unmanned air taxis,' Winter explained. In late 2024, FlyNow Aviation established a new company, FlyNow Arabia Ltd., in Riyadh, as part of its expansion strategy. The company plans to set up local production facilities to serve both domestic and international markets. FlyNow is an alumnus of the Destination Deep Tech program at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and Winter has been invited to share insights with the participants of the follow-up program called KAUST ScaleX, which has been designed to support innovative global tech startups in expanding their operations into the Kingdom's market. Recently, Flynow achieved a significant milestone in the development of its modular eCopter family: the first untethered test flights were successfully completed at the newly secured testing site in Eastern Austria. This location enables unrestricted flight operations and accelerates its technical progress.

Hungary's ambassador bids farewell to Saudi Arabia after a decade of diplomacy
RIYADH: Hungarian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Balazs Selmeci bid farewell to the Kingdom as he concluded his decade-long tenure. Selmeci visited Arab News headquarters in Riyadh on Monday, where he met with Editor-in-Chief Faisal J. Abbas. The envoy said his goals were to strengthen political and diplomatic relations, expand economic ties and promote a positive image of Hungary in Saudi Arabia. At the same time, Selmeci sought to highlight Saudi Arabia's changes and opportunities in Hungary, as well as the hospitality and kindness of the Saudi people. 'I believe I achieved good results in both areas, thanks to the support of Saudi institutions, the people and my colleagues at the embassy,' Selmeci told Arab News. Reflecting on his time in the Kingdom, Selmeci highlighted the significant changes he witnessed over the years. He singled out the closing ceremony of Riyadh Season at King Fahd Stadium as a moment that symbolized Saudi Arabia's rapid transformation. Saudi society showed commitment to the reforms, leading to a more open and globally connected country. Balazs Selmeci, Hungarian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia He recalled that the stadium was full of men and women together, and Saudi ballet dancers performed on stage — something that would have been unimaginable earlier. 'At that moment, I realized how much Saudi Arabia had changed. I saw many talented Saudis and felt their happiness, both on stage and in the audience,' the envoy said. Over more than 10 years in Saudi Arabia, Selmeci observed the transformative impact of Vision 2030, including societal reforms and economic diversification. He added that social reforms — such as involving women in the workforce, increasing their participation across sectors, welcoming international visitors and events, and balancing tradition with modernization — laid the foundation for economic progress. 'Vision 2030 itself required great courage from the leadership and strong support from the Saudi people,' Selmeci said. From the outset, Saudi society showed commitment to the reforms, leading to a more open and globally connected country, he added. 'These social and ongoing economic reforms have increased Saudi Arabia's international presence and influence,' Selmeci said. He added that the reforms have allowed foreigners to better understand the Kingdom and build trust, and that the dedication of both the government and the people provides a strong foundation for success. Selmeci began his tenure as ambassador on Nov. 14, 2019, presenting his credentials to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Dec. 12, and to King Salman on Jan. 8, 2020. Before then, he served in Riyadh as deputy head of mission from March 2014 to June 2018, marking more than a decade since he first began working to strengthen Saudi-Hungarian relations. During his tenure, he oversaw the first-ever bilateral meeting between the two countries' foreign ministers in the Kingdom, as well as the first bilateral meeting between their defense ministers. Selmeci said that among the economic cooperation projects during his tenure, his favorites were the reestablishment of the Saudi-Hungarian Business Council, the launch of the Saudi-Hungarian Digitalization Cluster and the creation of the first Saudi-Hungarian joint venture in the Kingdom. He also extended his best wishes to the Saudi people, encouraging them to continue working with determination toward a better life, making the country more prosperous while preserving its traditions and heritage. Asked what message he would leave for his successor, Selmeci expressed hope that they would build on these achievements and accomplish even greater successes, while creating as many memorable experiences as he did. He added that his successor could count on the full support of the Saudi leadership, officials, the people, the diplomatic corps and embassy staff. In his closing remarks, the ambassador said he planned to return to the Kingdom in the future — 'even as a simple tourist, to walk in King Salman Park, visit Qiddiya or attend Expo 2030.'
