One of the community groups GEG is working with for this event is the Lam Kwun King Memorial Fund (Memorial Fund). The founder of Memorial Fund, Lam Tak Hing Vincent JP is the recipient of the China Charity Award, considered the country's highest honour for philanthropy.
The Memorial Fund, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is widely respected for its commitment to supporting the education of underprivileged students from rural areas in Henan and Yunnan provinces. Embracing the long-term vision of its mission – which is to inspire and motivate young people from isolated regions with exposure to the outside world, including cultural, social and technological developments – the Memorial Fund has also sponsored and organised summer camps and visits to metropolitan Chinese cities. Since 2005, it has empowered more than 40,000 young people through various initiatives, helping them expand their perspectives beyond their isolated communities.

Advertisement Karen Mok Man-wai is one of Hong Kong's more internationally acclaimed stars. However, it is in the nearby Mandarin-speaking places that she has enjoyed greater success. Despite growing up in a city where the majority speak Cantonese, she has released 13 Mandarin albums – the most of any woman singer who debuted in Hong Kong – and has spent the better part of the past decade touring in mainland China. For millennia, humans have carefully harvested the delicate fibre that has given silkworms their name, and woven it into one of the most enduring luxuries besides gold itself. Indeed, in a world where fast fashion endangers any handcrafting left in the apparel industry, true silk – and what it represents – is likely to only become more valuable. Looking through recent runway collections, silk is omnipresent in its various weaves, from chiffon, organza and satin, to pure silk. Among the stand-out examples are the ultra-bohemian olive harem pants at Zimmermann autumn 2025, the tiered sheer silk chiffon dresses at Chanel's candy-coloured cruise 2025-26 show , the pearlescent ruff-necked maxi at Ralph Lauren autumn/winter 2025-26, and the body-skimming midi skirts, blouses and ruched dresses at Gucci cruise 2026. Photo: Handout Advertisement In March, Gucci launched The Art of Silk , a homage to its century-long love affair with the fabric, with a book and campaign lensed by Steven Meisel and featuring actress Julia Garner, windswept and draped in silk foulards in various patterns. The shimmeringly smooth yet breathable natural fibre is widely believed to have originated in neolithic China, though recent evidence suggests that other Bronze Age civilisations may have also been producing silk around that time, perhaps from the silk-producing larvae of other species of moth. The World History Encyclopedia notes that ancient archaeological records first mention sericulture (the commercial rearing of silkworms for silk) around 3600BC, with the first known examples of woven silk dating from 2700BC, in what is now Zhejiang province. In the 2,500 years between that milestone and the development of the trading routes known collectively as the Silk Road, the fibre, and the fabric it was woven into, became among the most coveted commodities in all the ancient world. Photo: Handout The Silk Road network developed after the Han dynasty opened up trade with neighbouring regions in 130BC, leading to knowledge of the fabric spreading far beyond Asia – even as China ensured its sericulture techniques were kept a secret for centuries, only making the fabric still more valuable. Famously, in 552, the Roman Emperor Justinian sent two monks on a mission to China, who returned to Byzantium with silkworm eggs or larvae hidden in their walking sticks. The resulting monopoly of European production filled Roman coffers for centuries – until the 7th century Arab conquest of the Persians, also early developers of sericulture, brought the practice to Spain. Later came Venetian merchant Marco Polo's 13th century voyage to China, which promoted the growth of sericulture in Italy. Today, Como remains one of the world's silk-making hubs, due to its prime location and climate, but also due to Duke of Milan Ludovico Sforza's push to plant mulberry trees – on which the silkworms feed – around the lake in the late 15th century, as well as the World War II destruction of Lyon, Europe's main source of supply for several centuries.

Last year, the HKRep performed this dynamic interactive drama in 20 schools, teaching students about environmental protection and encouraging them to bring such knowledge back to their families so everyone can contribute to building a better future. Mr. Mike Chow, Head of Education Hub and the playwright, director and producer of 'Carbon Reduction Alliance Saves Our Earth', said 'Through a fun theatrical approach, kindergarteners can easily grasp the importance of reducing their carbon footprint and adopting sustainable habits from an early age.' The Climate Foundation has long been dedicated to relieving climate poverty and promoting climate education. It firmly believes that education is the cornerstone to sustainable carbon reduction. Mr. Edmund Ng, the Foundation Secretary of the Climate Foundation and Company Secretary of Crystal Group, said 'Last year, we witnessed students immersing themselves in the story, which reaffirms for us that educational theatre can plant the seeds of environmental consciousness in children's hearts, fostering sustainability in living with carbon stewardship. This year we continue to support the HKRep in this effort, hoping that even more children and their families can benefit from these educational performances, working towards in building a better future in reaching 'Crystal Net Zero 2050'.' Riding on its success last year, the HKRep has toured more than 30 schools in the past school term.
