
‘It's a matter of time before her husband is worn down by her': How the gossip website Tattle Life nearly broke me
unmasked the owner of Tattle Life,
a website which has become synonymous with online hatred, harassment and doxxing, as Sebastian Bond, also known as Bastian Durward. Bond, a vegan cooking influencer and author of the book Nest and Glow, had been taken to court by Neil and Donna Sands, a Northern Irish couple who were subject to defamation and harassment on the site. It awarded them £300,000 (€351,000) in libel damages, believed to be the largest defamation payout of its kind in Northern Ireland.
Founded in 2018, Tattle Life describes itself as a 'commentary website on public business social media accounts'. For all intents and purposes, it's a gossip forum in the vein of Reddit, with threads on a variety of topics and individuals, which are posted and commented on by its users. But it's a lucrative one: it was making about £320,000 per year through online advertising.
The official line of the website is that it serves to 'allow commentary and critiques of people that choose to monetise their personal life as a business and release it into the public domain', a version of 'if you're going to put yourself out there, you deserve whatever you get'. The fact that the website's founder put such a veil of secrecy around his own identity feels both ironic and exactly what you'd expect.
Posters share to the site anonymously – much like Bond himself, who used the pseudonym Helen McDougal to post on the site – expressing grievances they maintain they can't otherwise.

But the reality of it is darker. As someone who's been the subject of several threads on Tattle – some positive, in the 'rave about' section, but more negative – I've seen first hand the relentless hatred the site facilitates, which is aimed, by and large, at female influencers. Given that women outnumber men in the influencer marketing industry, this is perhaps unsurprising, but even the more prolific male influencers don't inspire the same feverish vitriol as their female counterparts.

Though I was, for a time, a journalist, TV and radio personality and social influencer, since 2020 or thereabouts, I've written a reader-supported newsletter on Substack, co-presented a podcast with my sister, and posted inconsistently on Instagram, sharing my life in Indiana, where I moved to in March 2020. I've had an online presence for almost half of my life, and I've been the subject of criticism on the internet for just as long – but it was never quite as nasty as it has been since the dawn of Tattle.
Though a disclaimer on the home page states it has 'a zero-tolerance policy to any content that is abusive, hateful or harmful', Tattle has been the site of some of the most personal attacks I've seen. I've seen comments about me such as: 'She's next level pathetic, adds no value to society, yet her entitlement knows no bounds'; 'it's only a matter of time before her husband is worn down by her relentless negativity. She really doesn't contribute anything of note to the family unit'; and 'She has to be the laziest person alive'. And this is tame by comparison to what I've seen on others' threads.
There is no common link between posts. These people are not dedicated, for example, to exposing influencers who don't declare their sponsored content; or to catching out Instagram stars who are lying about what shampoo they use, or which mattress they sleep on. This is not about keeping the internet honest, although that is the lie a lot of them will tell, when pressed.
Instead, the link is one of a kind of insidious, creeping misogyny; never are the users of Tattle Life more incensed than when a woman they follow seems to 'fail', somehow, in her role as a woman. They deride women for hiring cleaners. They are aghast at women whose husbands cook dinner ('what does she even do all day?!'). They are at their most vitriolic when they perceive a woman to be criticising her children or, worse, admonishing them in a tone any more severe than a Mary Poppins sing-song. Threats of calling child protective services are not uncommon.
There's something bizarre about all of it; by and large, the most common influencer genres are fashion, beauty, wellness and fitness. The achievement of traditional femininity, both aesthetically and in lifestyle terms (marriage, children and the keeping of a tidy home), is never more rewarded than on Instagram and TikTok. But step one perfectly pedicured foot out of place and there is a legion of critics ready to tear you apart.
It's easy to see what these people get out of it – Tattle provides a place to vent their frustration and irritation with, and even hatred of, influencers who, in their minds, don't deserve their success or good fortune. But figuring out what they want, beyond finding a sense of camaraderie with other disgruntled social media users, is more complex, and perhaps more importantly, futile.

Neil and Donna Sands found legal recourse for their defamation at the hands of Tattle's users – and in the arduous and costly process brought to light the man behind the site who has profited from the thinly veiled misogyny directed at women with a public platform. Their victory has given hope to the many influencers who would like to see Tattle's anonymous users unveiled in the same way.
But you'd have to wonder: to what end? Do we really need to know the names of these posters in order to know what kind of people they are?
For me, this week's news has been remarkably clarifying: here is yet another man profiting from a culture that pits woman against woman, encouraging them to belittle and criticise one another. Instead of seeking to unmask these anonymous posters, perhaps it's time we directed our focus elsewhere.
Tattle Life nearly broke me. I've tried to examine why, exactly, I've given anonymous strangers such power – the power to upset me, sure, but also, at times, the power to censor me, to humiliate me, to cause me to second-guess my every online move. In part, I think it's because a lot of their criticisms – about my work ethic or my body or my relationship – are things I've felt about myself, one time or another.
But another aspect of it is that I just want everyone to like me. Discovering the identities of these people won't change that.

'Serious player' in East Cork drugs trade jailed for 10 years
A ten-year jail term was imposed today on a 39-year-old Cobh man who was described by the judge as 'a serious player in the sale, supply and distributions of drugs in East Cork.' Judge Helen Boyle imposed a total sentence of 12 years with the last two years suspended in the case against Gerard Hayes of College Lawn, College Manor, Cobh, Co Cork. Judge Boyle said this was a very successful garda operation and she commended in particular the work of gardaí from Cobh and Midleton in the investigation of a man who was part of a criminal organisation and that the large amount of cash and property seized both in East Cork and in Dublin represented the proceeds of crime. Addressing the accused man directly, Judge Boyle said: 'You were not simply moving that money around for somebody else, you were the person who had gathered that money through drug-dealing.' A total of €672,000 in cash wrapped in vacuum packs and duct-tape was found in the boot of his car when he was stopped on Mespil Road in Dublin — money he initially described as being his life savings before pleading guilty to money-laundering in respect of it. Detective Sergeant Eugene McCarthy said: 'He insisted it was all from cash jobs and 'foxers' he had done over the years and denied any involvement in drugs … The way the money was wrapped and marked bears all the hallmarks of drug-dealing,' That was on February 20, 2024, within days of being released on bail following his arrest for drug-dealing and money-laundering offences in East Cork. And he was arrested for a third time — having secured High Court bail in relation to the Dublin charges — soon afterwards on March 20, 2024. Detective Garda Dylan Murphy said that on this date he was seen driving a Toyota Avensis near Cobh rugby club and on being searched he had €1,400 worth of cocaine in deals concealed in a repurposed spray cannister. On the first of the three incidents before the court today, two hair-brushes were found in his possession. While there was a lot of hair tangled in the brushes it was discovered on closer inspection that the brushes had been modified to conceal close to €3,000 worth of cocaine in deals. This first incident on February 2, 2024, was described by Detective Garda James McCarthy. Gerard Hayes had just driven his Audi A4 from a storage shed he was renting for €5,000 per year at Ballydaniel Ballymore in Cobh. A total of €62,800 in cash was found at that premise in Ballymore. All of the cash was in €50 notes. It was found in an office under timber which was under tarpaulin. An assortment of ammunition — for which he once had a licence, but did not have at the time — was found on that occasion. Some of the ammunition and related materials were found in the attic of the storage premises. Also following searches carried out at that time at Ballynacorra River, East Ferry, Midleton, he admitted possession of proceeds of criminal conduct in the form of a boat, including contents and engine, with a value of €86,000. Between the three incidents he was interviewed on 17 separate occasions and disclosed nothing of material assistance to the investigations during any of them. Ultimately, he made admissions to charges including the possession of cocaine for sale or supply and possession of large quantities of ammunition and silencers for firearms and the very large amount of cash and property — the proceeds of criminal conduct, which are money-laundering charges. The most serious charge states that on February 20, 2024, at Mespil Road, Dublin 4 he had the proceeds of criminal conduct, namely cash to the value of €672,000. As well as the Mespil Road money-laundering charge there was a charge on the same date related to his home in Cobh involving €10,050. The total value of cash, vehicles, boat and other property that were deemed to be the proceeds of criminal conduct, totalled over €745,000. Judge Helen Boyle made a forfeiture order to the State of all of this. The Audi A6 being paid for in instalments by the accused was not forfeited to the State. Jane Hyland senior counsel emphasised the value of the pleas of guilty made by the accused in these cases. She said the accused felt shame, not least for the impact that his incarceration would have on his family.

Jamie Bryson and Daithí McKay cleared in Northern Ireland Nama misconduct trial
THREE MEN, INCLUDING loyalist activist Jamie Bryson and former Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay, have been cleared at Belfast Crown Court of charges relating to misconduct in public office. Bryson, 35, from Rosepark in Donaghadee, and co-accused Thomas O'Hara, 41, from Lisnahunshin Road in Cullybackey, were found not guilty of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office. The charges had related to a Stormont committee hearing that examined the sale of the National Asset Management Agency's (Nama) Northern Ireland assets in 2015. McKay, 43, from Loughan Road in Dunnamanagh – who was chairman of the finance committee at the time – was found not guilty of misconduct in public office. Bryson and McKay said there are now questions for the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) over why the prosecution was brought. The PPS has said the available evidence had indicated it was in the public interest to prosecute. Trial judge Gordon Kerr KC said he believed Bryson had lied while giving evidence in the case, but said he was not involved in a criminal conspiracy. The long-running Nama trial had related to Bryson's 2015 appearance before the Stormont committee, chaired by McKay, which was investigating the sale of Nama's Northern Ireland assets to a US investment fund. The criminal probe was launched after the publication of leaked Twitter messages between Bryson, McKay and the account of O'Hara, who at the time was a Sinn Fein activist in north Antrim. McKay quit as an MLA within hours of the Twitter messages being published in August 2016. The Stormont Finance Committee inquiry was set up in 2015 amid political controversy over the multimillion-pound sale of Nama's property portfolio. Advertisement Nama, the so-called bad bank created by the Irish government to deal with the toxic loans of bailed-out lenders during the economic crash, sold its 800 Northern Ireland-linked properties to investment fund Cerberus for £1.2 billion. Giving evidence to the committee in 2015, Bryson used Assembly privilege to name former DUP leader Peter Robinson as a beneficiary of the sale. The then-first minister of Northern Ireland strongly rejected any suggestion he benefited from the deal. All other parties involved in the transaction also denied wrongdoing. Delivering his judgment in the non-jury trial today, the judge said: 'Despite his lies in court, I am sure that Bryson was at all times communicating with McKay. 'I am sure that the communications were designed to give Bryson the best advice and guidance to maximise his chances of giving evidence. 'My analysis of the messages do not show any occasion where McKay undertook to say or do anything outside his duties as chairman to ensure Bryson's evidence would be in open session. 'Clearing Bryson, the judge said the evidence did not establish there had been a criminal conspiracy between him and McKay. He said: 'In the absence of an agreement, the conspiracy charge must fail.' Turning to McKay, the judge said there was 'no doubt he deliberately misled the committee to ease the way for Bryson's presentation'. The judge pointed out the Assembly had its own code of conduct and said there was 'no precedent for a prosecution in these circumstances'. Clearing McKay, he added: 'I do not consider it my role to expand the offence.' The judge said the evidence against O'Hara 'fell well short' of anything which would convince him of his guilt.

Ashling Murphy's partner settles BBC defamation case over reporting on victim impact statement
THE DEFAMATION CASE taken by Ryan Casey, the partner of murdered school teacher Ashling Murphy, against the BBC following comments made about his victim impact statement on a live broadcast has been settled, the High Court heard this morning. In a statement released after the settlement, Casey said he was now 'finally free' to use his voice again, to honour Ashling and to 'advocate for the changes we desperately require in this country'. 'Let's honour Ashling by building a better and safer Ireland,' he said. The BBC said it was 'happy to clarify' that it does not consider Casey to be 'someone guilty of or attempting to incite hatred'. Casey had taken the case in relation to a BBC Northern Ireland broadcast of 'The View' programme in November 2023, relating to Casey's victim impact statement at the sentencing of Ms Murphy's murderer Josef Puska. Casey was represented by Ronan Lupton SC, instructed by Tullamore firm Brian P Adams & Company. At the High Court today Alan Keating SC, for the BBC, read out a statement on the settlement of the case on behalf of the broadcaster. 'In the BBC's 30 November, 2023 episode of its live political programme 'The View', Ryan Casey's victim impact statement at the sentencing of his late partner's murderer was discussed. 'The BBC stands by the journalism involved in this episode which debated serious issues of public interest. 'The BBC is happy to clarify that it does not consider Ryan Casey to be a criminal or a racist or someone guilty of or attempting to incite hatred, or someone seeking to pose as a hero of the Far Right through his victim impact statement. 'The BBC acknowledges Casey's personal tragedy. This statement clarifies any unintentional inferences that could have been drawn from the broadcast and has enabled the BBC and Ryan Casey to resolve this matter amicably,' the statement read. It is understood the settlement is a six-figure sum. Justice Alexander Owens then struck out the case and made no order. Advertisement Jozef Puska (35) murdered Ms Murphy (23) on 12 January 2022, by repeatedly stabbing her in the neck after attacking her while she exercised along the canal towpath outside Tullamore, Co Offaly. He was later convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence. Originally from Slovakia, Puska had lived in Offaly with his wife and five children. Ashling Murphy, a talented traditional Irish musician and recent graduate from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, was working as a teacher at Durrow National School at the time of her murder. Casey's statement In his statement, Casey said he welcomed the resolution of the matter and said the case was not just about him but about 'truth, fairness and decency'. His statement reads: 'Today marks the end of a long and difficult chapter of frustration and censorship. 'I took this legal action against the BBC not solely out of anger but out of a need for accountability and dignity for Ashling, for myself, our families and for all victims who deserve to have their voices heard without such harsh criticism or judgment. 'I welcome the resolution of these legal proceedings and the acknowledgements made by the BBC in their statement in open court today. 'I hope this serves as a reminder to all media organisations of the high level of responsibility that comes with running such public platforms. 'This was never just about me, it was about truth, fairness and decency. 'To everyone who supported me either in person, by post, text messages, phone calls, social media posts and comments over the last three-and-a-half years: I can now finally come forward and say from the bottom of my heart thanks to each and every one of you. 'Don't think for a second I didn't see all your amazing support across all platforms, it was humbling to say the least. 'I'd like to thank my lawyers, Ronan [Lupton SC], Gerard [Groarke BL] and Marianne [Deeley, solicitor] for their fantastic guidance, support and professionalism throughout the entire legal proceedings.
