Coach blames players' lack of confidence for loss to Thailand in King's Cup final

The Sun5 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: National sepak takraw head coach Ahmad Jais Baharun has expressed disappointment at his players' lacklustre performance en route to losing to Thailand in the Thai King's Cup men's team regu final yesterday.
He said that his men, who are capable of playing much better, lacked confidence in themselves, and this led to their defeat.
'Personally, the players did not perform up to expectations in the final... they did not capitalise on their chances when they went ahead, and that allowed our opponents to catch up and put us under pressure.
'That is what we need to work on ahead of the SEA Games at the end of this year,' he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Yesterday, the national side lost 2-0 to arch-rivals Thailand in the team regu final of the 2025 Thai King's Cup at the Central Hatyai shopping centre in Songkhla.
The defeat means Malaysia's 34-year wait for victory in the team regu event continues, with their last win coming in the 1991 SEA Games in Manila.
Ahmad Jais, however, is not about to press the panic button as he has only had a short time to prepare the players for the Thai King's Cup.
With a few more months to go to the Dec 9-20 SEA Games in Thailand, he plans to use the time left to draw up a more effective strategy so that his men can be competitive at the biennial Games.
'For the Thai King's Cup, we only had a week to whip the team into shape. However, I don't want to use that as an excuse or reason for our lacklustre performance.
'Insha-Allah, we will conduct a post-mortem in preparation for the SEA Games in Thailand,' he said- BERNAMA

Elvis Priestly advances to semi-finals at World Aquatics Championships

MALAYSIA'S national diver Elvis Priestly Clement has secured a semi-final spot in the men's 10-metre platform after an outstanding display at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships here today. The 18-year-old finished 10th out of 48 competitors with 432.90 points after six dives at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. The Sarawakian, who made his world championship debut in Singapore on July 26, will now compete at 10am tomorrow against 17 others for a place in the final scheduled at 5.30 pm the same day. Meanwhile, Enrique Maccartney Harold failed to advance to the next round after finishing 37th with 323.45 points in the same event. National swimmer and SEA Games gold medallist Phee Jinq En finished 30th overall in the women's 50m breaststroke heats with a time of 31.78 seconds, failing to qualify for the semi-final at the World Aquatics Championships Arena. Last Monday, the 27-year-old sat out of the 100m breaststroke event due to a hip and groin issue. The 2025 World Aquatics Championships will conclude tomorrow, wrapping up 24 days of events comprising water polo, diving, high diving, swimming, artistic swimming, and open water swimming. - Bernama

Elvis and Jinq En make waves at worlds with personal bests

Elvis Priestly Clement of Malaysia competes in the men's 10m platform preliminaries at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. - AP PETALING JAYA: Debutant diver Elvis Priestly Clement and seasoned swimmer Phee Jinq En put up heart-warming performances for Malaysia on the penultimate day of the World Championships in Singapore yesterday. Sarawakian Elvis splashed to 10th place to comfortably make his way into the semi-finals after scoring 64.50, 72.00, 82.50, 86.70, 62.40 and 64.80 for a total of 432.90 points. Only the top 18 divers from the preliminary stage advance to the semi-finals and Elvis delivered on his promise not just to beat the Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) of 380 but also breached the 400-point barrier for the first time. The 18-year-old, a double gold medallist when Sarawak hosted the Malaysia Games (Sukma) last year, is the last Malaysian athlete remaining in the world meet. No Malaysian diver has qualified for the top 12 individual final at the world meet so far. The second Malaysian diver Enrique Maccartney Harold, however, failed to advance further after settling for 37th from 48 divers on 323.45 points (36.00, 67.20, 52.80, 37.95, 52.70, 76.80). Elvis and Enrique had finished seventh for Malaysia in the men's 10m platform synchro final earlier in the week. In swimming, Jinq En turned back the clock by posting her fastest time in six years in the 50m breaststroke event. The former SEA Games multiple gold medallist swimmer clocked 31.78s to place 30th from 53 starters in the heats at OCBC Aquatic Centre. The 27-year-old Jinq En, who picked up a hip injury during training in Bukit Jalil last week, had opted to sit out the 100m breaststroke on Monday to focus on the shorter race. Jinq En's decision paid dividends as her time was just over three-tenths of a second off her national record (31.40s), which she set en route to winning the gold at the 2019 Manila SEA Games. It was at the same pool 10 years ago when Jinq En made a stunning SEA Games debut by winning gold in the 100m breaststroke and silver in the 50m breaststroke. "First time under 32 seconds at the worlds. Of course, I am pleased given that I swam with half a leg not kicking properly. "I need proper rest for maybe two weeks after this and we see how. I need to be vigilant during the rehabilitation period," said Jinq En.
