They will go back to the main temple after nine days. The return car journey, known as 'Bahuda Yatra', will held on July 5. Earlier in the day, amid chanting of 'Jai Jagannath' and 'Hari bol', devotees resumed pulling the three chariots around 10 am, after the Rath Yatra was halted on June 27 night.
The chariots were scheduled to reach Gundicha temple by Friday evening. But they had to be stopped on Grand Road as Lord Balabhadra's Taladhwaja chariot got stuck while negotiating a turn, preventing the other two chariots from advancing. According to the tradition, 'Taladhwaja' rolls first, followed by 'Darpadalana' of Devi Subhadra and 'Nandighosha' of Lord Jagannath. The chariots with deities inside were kept on the road overnight amid tight security. Thousands of devotees, who spent thenight in the holy town, joined in large numbers in chariot pulling amid sounds of gongs and conches. Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania and other senior officials were found pulling Lord Jagannath's 'Nandighosha'. After the chariots reached their destination, they were parked outside the Gundicha temple. The deities will be taken inside the temple on Sunday in a ceremonial procession.
'We thank all stakeholders, including devotees, for the conduct of Rath Yatra,' said Arabinda Padhee, the Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration. Meanwhile, all arrangements have been made for the security of the chariots and controlling the crowd, said the DGP.
Over 600 devotees were treated at different hospitals in Puri after falling ill during the Rath Yatra on Saturday. While many of them were injured due to jostling, more than 200 people fainted in the hot and humid weather conditions.
An estimated 10 lakh devotees participated in the annual Rath Yatra on Friday and around 5 lakh people were in the holy town on Saturday, officials said, adding that the weather was favourable on Saturday even though there was light rain.

With Kerala's new DGP appointment, why the 1994 Koothuparamba firing is being recalled
The appointment of 1991-batch IPS officer Ravada Chandrasekhar as the new DGP and the state police chief on Monday (June 30) has brought back the 1994 police firing incident at Koothuparamba, in Kannur, into focus. Five young CPI(M) men were killed in the firing, and another man, whom the party called a 'living martyr', became bedridden and died last year. In 1998, the CPI(M)-led government registered a murder case against Chandrasekhar, who was one of the police officers in the dock at the time. In 1994, when the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government was in power in Kerala, Marxist rebel leader MV Raghavan, who had formed the Communist Marxist Party (CMP) after being ousted from CPI(M), was the Cooperation Minister. Raghavan had started a new medical college in Kannur, under the cooperatives sector, the first such medical college in India at the time. However, the CPI(M) youth wing, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), had long been on the warpath against the idea of a self-financing medical college. It argued that the model would lead to the commercialisation of higher education in Kerala and make it inaccessible to the public. On November 25, 1994, when Raghavan reached Koothuparamba to inaugurate a bank branch, DYFI activists black flagged and waylaid him. The melee resulted in police firing on DYFI workers, killing five of them. An injured victim named Pushpan was bedridden for three decades. The 1991-batch IPS officer was appointed as the assistant superintendent of police for the Thalassery sub-division, which includes Koothuparamba, two days before the firing. He was also present in Koothuparamba on that day. The Justice Padmanabhan Nair commission, which probed the incident, said of Chandrasekhar, 'He had acted in compliance with the orders of the executive magistrate. However, the ASP ought to have exercised discretion vested with him carefully.'' Acting on the commission report, the CPI(M) government in 1997 directed police to register a murder case against Raghavan, Deputy SP Hakeem Bathery and executive magistrate T T Antony. The next year, then-DIG Jacob Punnose submitted a report to the court, listing Chandrasekhar as an accused in the case. Subsequently, Chandrasekhar, who was then SP, was placed under suspension in November 1998, but was later reinstated. The officer petitioned the High Court over the FIR against him. It was later quashed, and the decision was also upheld by the Supreme Court when the CPI(M) government challenged the HC order. Why is the CPI(M) facing heat over Chandrasekhar's appointment? Koothuparamba victims are among the CPI(M)'s most celebrated martyrs, and the incident is often projected as a symbol of the fighting spirit of the cadres. As a result, the CPI(M) appointing an officer who was once blamed for the killing of party workers has become a political issue. The Congress has also criticised the decision. The CPI(M) state secretary, M V Govindan, said the Union Government (through the UPSC) had suggested three names and the state had to pick one among them. 'The appointment is not based on any clean chit given by the party. The court had quashed the case against Chandrasekhar, who was an alleged accused in the case. It was the UDF regime that killed our five comrades. They (the UDF) now need not come as advocates of the martyrs,'' said Govindan. Three decades since the firing, the CPI(M) has seen various shifts. A CMP faction founded by MV Raghavan was eventually merged with the CPI(M) in 2019. Further, the CPI(M) has embraced Raghavan's son, MV Nikesh Kumar, who is now a district committee member of the party in Kannur. Further, the Koothuparamba agitation was against the commercialisation of professional education in Kerala. In the years since then, the CPI(M) has itself helped establish self-financing colleges. On March 25 this year, the Kerala assembly passed a draft Bill that will now allow entry to private universities in the state. At every such policy shift, Opposition leaders remind the CPI(M) about the Koothuparamba firing.

Servitors should get full chariot access, CM Mohan Majhi urged
BHUBANESWAR: Members of the Chhatisha Nijog during their meeting with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday raised objections to the newly-imposed provisions of allowing only duty-bound servitors on chariots during pahandi of the deities on Rath Yatra. President of Chhatisha Nijog Janardan Pattajoshi Mahapatra said while only Singhari Nijog and Puja Panda Nijog servitors are allowed to touch Lord Jagannath on normal days, Rath Yatra is the only time when servitors of all nijogs can touch the Trinity and offer prayers from a close proximity. However, in a move to maintain discipline and ensure smooth conduct of rituals, Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan had this year announced that the government would allow only servitors in charge of Rath Yatra duties on the chariots. He had added that unauthorised persons or servitors who have no role to play in the rituals would be booked if found on the chariots. The temple administration implemented the decision and ensured that non-servitors are not allowed on the chariots.

HC expresses deep concern over Rachakonda police meddling in civil disputes
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court single bench of Justice Tadakamalla Vinod Kumar on Tuesday expressed deep concern and strongly disapproved action of the Rachakonda police for meddling in civil disputes and settling them in the Nagole police station itself in lieu of Rs.55 lakh. The judge was astonished to know from the counsel for petitioner Pamu Sudershanam that the Nagole police had confined him from morning to evening on June 19. The court while expressing shock at such an appalling action of the police, summoned Sudheer Babu, Rachakonda Commissioner and Nagole SHO to appear before it and explain reasons for the SHO in registering a crime against Sudershanam in a civil dispute, which is pending before a court since 2000. However, in adherence to court orders, Babu appeared before the judge 'through video conference'; the SHO appeared in person. Justice Vinod Kumar found fault with the police in interfering in a civil dispute… showing over indulgence in settling it in the station pertaining to a private property in plot 65, Krushi Nagar, Bandlaguda, despite the fact that three civil cases were in a court, apart from an injunction order in favour of the petitioner. The judge observed how the police can be so oblivious about court orders, showing scant regard… and show deep interest in solving a civil dispute. He observed that 'police stations in the State have became 'settlement addas'. This trend is at its peak, after the Telangana State was formed'. The Nagole SHO detained Sudershanam in PS and threatened him to settle the dispute pertaining to the property with S Janga Reddy, Thurpati Krishna and Thurpati Ramchander, who paid the SHO Rs. 55 lakh to ensure the dispute is settled in their favour. The petitioner was threatened with criminal cases by the police. The judge said the DGP should take action in enlightening the police officers in State on 'civil disputes'. Justice Vinod Kumar adjudicated the writ filed by Sudharshanam, who complained that the Nagole police indulged in settlement of civil disputes in PS pertaining to his plot in Nagole circle with real estate agents by paying Rs 55 lakh. Hearing in the case was adjourned to second week of July. Batch of six writ petitions seeking 'judicial probe' into Group-1 exam On Tuesday the High Court single bench of Namavarapu Rajeshwar Rao heard the batch of six writ petitions filed by candidates who were not able to get a rank in the general ranking list of Group-1 Main exam seeking a direction to order a judicial probe into the entire selection process of candidates. Rachna, senior counsel for petitioners in one writ, contended that the Telangana Public Service Commission erred in issuing two different hall-tickets to the candidates. She said all the candidates who cleared the Preliminary Group 1 exam were issued only one hall-ticket, whereas the TGPSC vide its web note of October 9, 2024 had directed the successful candidates to download second fresh hall-ticket, in sheer violation of rules. She contended that the practice of issuing two hall-tickets--one for Preliminary and another for the Mains--is not followed by the UPSC. On April 17, 2025, Justice Rao had directed TGPSC 'not to issue appointment orders' to all selected candidates in Group-1 exam, but directed the TGPSC to go ahead with certificate verification of the selected candidates. Counsels for the petitioners sought a 'stay' on the notification and evaluation process for the recruitment notification no 02/2024, dated February 19, and a 'judicial probe' into the evaluation alleging that several irregularities and inconsistencies had cropped up while conducting the Group-1 exam on October 21. The judge heard the writ filed by Parmesh Matta and 19 others and five other petitions. The hearing was adjourned to Wednesday for further arguments.
