Ramanan backs Nurul Izzah for PKR deputy president post
The Sungai Buloh MP said this is because Nurul Izzah is seen as someone with international influence and very high integrity, which would benefit the party.
'In terms of qualifications, she's definitely qualified -- not only does she have vast political experience, she also has a strong public image in Malaysia and is globally recognised. So in my view, she's truly deserving.
'I see Nurul Izzah as someone transparent, with direction and foresight. She has never taken a break or said she didn't want to serve. If some do not wish to serve or want to serve in a different way, then they should not hold any position at all,' he said.
He was speaking to reporters after attending the opening of the Franchise International Malaysia (FIM 2025) exhibition and the ASEAN Franchise Convention (AFC) 2025 Declaration at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
Ramanan also dismissed claims by certain quarters that the nomination of Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's daughter to contest the deputy president post amounts to nepotism. He argued that logically, it is a democratic contest and not an appointment.
'If Nurul Izzah were appointed by her father, then yes, that would be nepotism. But this is a party election for deputy president; she is contesting, not being appointed.
'We have 30,000 members, party leaders representing three races to decide who becomes deputy president, vice-presidents and members of the Central Leadership Council (MPP). So to me, the issue of nepotism doesn't arise because she'll be elected, if she wins,' he said.
He added that more than two-thirds of PKR's 222 divisions have expressed support for her candidacy, reflecting the party's grassroots democracy.
'To me, this represents the grassroots' wishes. Based on what I've seen, more than 150 divisions, or two-thirds, have nominated her,' he said.
Ramanan also said he submitted his nomination form to contest the vice-president post yesterday.
Yesterday, Nurul Izzah, who is a PKR vice-president, said she will make the best decision regarding calls from grassroots members and party leaders for her to contest the deputy president post in the 2025-2028 term.
In a Facebook post, Nurul Izzah, who is also Penang PKR chief, said the decision must balance consensus, camaraderie and meaningful reforms for all party members.
Nominations for the 2025 PKR central leadership elections, including for Youth and Women's Wings, are being held online over two days starting today.
The PKR National Congress will be held from May 21 to 24 in Johor Bahru.

Anwar said Zunar's work is important not only in terms of uncovering historical chapters, but also serves as a lesson on what Malaysia must learn from and what is to be avoided. "To save the country, there must be a clear separation of powers and shared responsibility. "If we assume that the judiciary is a noble institution, history has shown that it has, at times, been tainted by corruption and abuse of power. PKR yet to appoint disciplinary board, but reports can be made, says Fuziah
PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh says the constitution allows the party's central leadership council to scrutinise and make decisions on complaints. PETALING JAYA : PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh has assured members that the party will continue to accept complaints made against their contemporaries, even though its disciplinary board has yet to be reconstituted following the recent party polls. 'We are not trying to curb our members from speaking out (against their contemporaries in the party). They have every right to submit their complaints,' she told FMT. Fuziah acknowledged that members had been enquiring about filing misconduct reports. She said the absence of the board should not be seen as an attempt to stifle internal dissent. 'There is still room for members to file disciplinary reports on other members,' she said, adding that the party could act on such complaints through provisions in its constitution. 'There's a clause in the party constitution that allows the central leadership council to scrutinise and make decisions directly.' The next council meeting, scheduled for July 27, would provide a forum to address any urgent matters. Fuziah stressed that the party's ongoing internal restructuring did not prevent members from seeking recourse via existing mechanisms. Her remarks follow rising unease within PKR, with several leaders recently voicing dissatisfaction over the party's direction and leadership decisions. PKR's party election commenced in March this year, covering both central and branch-level leadership contests, and culminated in the formation of a new central leadership council on May 23, 2025. On Friday, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim urged members to move past internal disagreements, particularly those related to judicial appointments. PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil later said Anwar had 'no intention' of initiating disciplinary proceedings against MPs for expressing dissenting views. 'They have the right to express their views, and Anwar has asked division leaders and PKR members to understand this and move on,' said Fahmi.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli has defended his recent criticisms of the government and the judiciary, stressing that holding one's own party accountable is a greater test of leadership than confronting political opponents. Rafizi said he faced discomfort from PKR leaders, including a memo by party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh suggesting that questioning the judiciary implies a loss of confidence in the prime minister — who is also PKR president, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'To me, the true test of a leader is not how loudly he confronts his opponents. The real test lies in the consistency and courage to speak out against one's own party and government.' 'Because rebuking a friend is far harder than criticising an enemy,' the former PKR deputy president said on Facebook. Rafizi drew parallels between his time in Cabinet and PAS's participation in the Perikatan Nasional government under Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. He cited the decision to increase annual lottery draws from eight to 22 as an example where the Islamist party remained in government despite public backlash.
