This satellite scans entire Earth every 20 mins, reports wildfires

Just over three months after US-based aerospace start-up Muon Space launched its FireSat Protoflight satellite, the end-to-end space systems provider has shared the first images taken by the spacecraft.
This spacecraft, launched on SpaceX's Transporter-13 mission in March, was a collaboration between Muon, and Earth Fire Alliance, a non-profit organisation aiming to gather real-time data from all fires on Earth.
'These first light images confirm that our IR sensors are operating as designed and collecting high-quality data,' said Dan McCleese, chief scientist of Muon Space in a press release.
The FireSat Protoflight satellite is the first of a proposed 50 satellites that Muon aims to launch, which they aim to use to track wildfires on Earth. The first few images taken by the FireSat Protoflight have been from a low-Earth orbit, using a multi-band infrared (IR) instrument. This then scanned for heat signatures, which could indicate the presence of wildfires.
Using a precise high-dynamic range (HDR) six-channel multispectral IR instrument, the satellites are capable of multispectral imaging across the visible, near-infrared (NIR), short-wave infrared (SWIR), mid-wave infrared (MWIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR) bands simultaneously. Each band takes up a channel, and the channels are used together to derive further information. The instrument is built by Muon Space itself.
The satellites are able to scan areas of over 1,500 kilometres at a time, and identify fires as small as five-by-five meters in that range. They are also able to make a distinction between false positive fires and actual wildfire threats.
The above image depicts FireSat Protoflight detecting thermal signatures at Libya's Sarir oil field complex, which are likely gas flares rather than a wildfire risk. The satellite's channels observing MWIR and LWIR identify the same heat sources, indicating the effectiveness of the multi-channel approach in data collection and allowing FireSat to differentiate different types of heat sources and confirm detections.
Once relevant data is acquired, it is sent out to first responders, policymakers, and communities facing escalating wildfire threats. This is a crucial advancement in space-based wildfire monitoring, providing accurate and relevant information to governments and concerned citizens alike.
Muon is set to launch the first block of three further FireSat satellites in 2026, and aims for the FireSat constellation to be at capacity and fully operational by 2030. The constellation is set to have global coverage, and will scan the entirety of Earth for wildfires every twenty minutes. Wildfire-prone areas would be scanned even more often, to further reduce the threat.

Telecom companies had set up shop in Delhi-NCR long before the region became a hotbed for global capability centres (GCCs). Initially drawn by proximity to policymakers, regulators and government telecom agencies, these firms soon realised the region's untapped potential for running complex technology and enterprise operations. Today, Delhi-NCR is a strategic node in global delivery networks for leading telecom giants. The region hosts some of the world's most prominent telecom GCCs, including those of Nokia, Ciena, Ericsson, Orange Business Services, BT Group, AT&T and Amdocs. These centres have evolved into R&D and innovation hubs, operational backbones, and force multipliers for global operations. Arindam Sen, partner and GCC sector lead for technology, media & entertainment and telecommunications at EY India, says NCR offers access to deep engineering talent, robust infrastructure, and the ability to manage both technology and enterprise operations at scale. 'Telecom GCCs initially set up (in Delhi-NCR) to be close to policymakers. Now, the region has transformed into a strategic advantage for them,' he says. Take Nokia. Its GCC in Noida is critical to its international operations. 'These centres are accountable for project delivery, cost efficiency, AI-driven automation, and remote service deployment,' says Sandeep Saxena , head of technology and solutions (mobile networks) at Nokia India. From its India GCC, the company manages networks across nearly 100 countries. Saxena says India does network planning, implementation, automation services, AI-led analytics and real-time field support for global clients. American optical networking and software company Ciena's Gurugram centre is its largest outside North America, and is the brain behind many of the company's signature technologies. The site supports development of Ciena's optical systems, routing and switching platforms, and its intelligent automation platform that provides network and services automation. It also houses engineering labs and product innovation spaces where teams develop solutions tailored for different markets. 'Our team contributes extensively to both hardware and software innovation,' says Amit Malik, VP and sales leader at Ciena India. The Gurugram facility also handles finance, accounting, IT services & support, legal, procurement and marketing. Siddhant Cally, research analyst at Counterpoint Research, says NCR-based GCCs manage everything from network rollout and RAN (radio access network) optimisation to back-end operations, network operations centre (NOC) services, tool development, and automation. A big reason these centres thrive is the region's talent ecosystem. NCR draws from premier engineering institutions – this ensures a steady pipeline of professionals skilled in AI/ML, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data analytics. Most GCCs have a blend of tech specialists and enterprise professionals. Ciena employs over 2,000 people in India, 60% of whom are in R&D. The company invests heavily in training young engineers through internships and collaborations with local colleges. 'Besides tech skills, we look for people with a sense of curiosity, communication and ability to work in a team,' Malik says. All of these efforts are paying off. Parent companies are looking to the GCCs to define the future. As Nokia's Saxena puts it, 'We're not just supporting operations; we're defining what telecom delivery will look like in the next decade.' The IPO, which was entirely a fresh issue of 32.5 lakh shares, was open from June 25 to June 27 and priced in a tight band with a single cut-off price. Incorporated in 2022, the Delhi-based company has carved a niche in the EV manufacturing segment with 12 models in its portfolio — including eight electric scooters and four e-rickshaw variants. Its pan-India network of over 445 distributors across 19 states suggests a strong last-mile retail presence. Supertech reported a 15% jump in revenue and 23% rise in PAT in FY25 over the previous year. Its net profit for FY25 stood at Rs 6.19 crore, on revenue of Rs 75.19 crore. The government is expected to hand out the first set of approvals under the Rs 22,919-crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for electronic components manufacturing 'in the next two-three months,' by August-September, a senior official told ET. ADVERTISEMENT The scheme has received an overwhelming response, attracting nearly 100 applications for manufacturing various components, from display modules to camera units to battery packs, from both established players and new entrants. A project management agency is likely to be appointed within a month to screen the applications, the official said, adding that approvals will follow soon after. The government is working on a fast-track mode to get the approvals rolling, the person said. The Union cabinet had on March 28 approved the PLI scheme targeted on passive or non-semiconductor electronics components. ADVERTISEMENT 'The response from industry has been good and very buoyant… I can see that many players would be keen to participate in this scheme which will be crucial to build the larger ecosystem,' said Atul Lall, managing director of electronics manufacturing service company Dixon Technologies.'For Dixon, it is a strategic foray and we will be applying. The timeline for applying is the end of July so the project reports and documentation is under preparation,' he told ET. 'All the non-semiconductor items which are being considered are essential in the electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) space.' The qualifications of the customers, too, is a long process.'The tenure of all this coming into fruition will be 18-24 months, but it (the scheme) is on the right track and we see a lot of capable people applying, including us, and, more importantly, ecosystem partners coming here to develop the ecosystem and technology,' Foulger through its subsidiary Yuzhan Technology, is also looking to apply under the smartphone display module category, sources had said at the time. ADVERTISEMENT On June 23, Bengaluru-based unicorn Zetwerk told ET it plans to pump in Rs 500-800 crore on manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs), enclosures and electromechanical components such as heatsink and the application for the PLI scheme is being prepared, Zetwerk is in talks with companies in Taiwan, South Korea and China for technology partnerships and is eyeing setting up manufacturing plants over the next one Shah, vice-president of research at Counterpoint Research, said the PLI is going to have maximum impact on components which can be assembled or manufactured in India like batteries, camera modules, display modules and others which contribute to a considerable amount of the cost of the devices.'Display and camera module assembly are the low hanging opportunities for India which could see the most traction,' he said. 'Having capabilities in building a manufacturing ecosystem for camera, display, battery, passive components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors would be a good first step alongside matured nodes semiconductor fabs for wafer as well as packaging.'This is the first such scheme to focus on promoting the manufacturing of passive electronic components and would help deepen value addition happening in the country. It is also meant to complement the existing PLI on mobile manufacturing and the India Semiconductor Mission under which six large players including the Tata Group are setting up chip assembly and chip fabrication scheme envisages to attract investment of Rs 59,350 crore, result in production of Rs 4.56 lakh crore, and generate additional direct employment for 91,600 persons besides many indirect electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said the segment will serve the requirements of several sectors, including telecom, consumer electronics, automobile, medical devices, power sector, etc. 'India has started developing capital goods, machine goods used to make electronic products. Major centres have come up in Pune, Coimbatore, Rajkot, Bangalore. Apple today has 64 suppliers in India,' he had said while announcing the scheme earlier this year.
