International Yoga Day 2025: According to Harvard Medical School, yoga can increase production of endorphins, reduce stress and elevate GABA (a chemical associated with decreased anxiety). To get some clarity, we asked Dr Sakshe Jain, consultant psychiatrist at Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune and Prerna Khetrapal, Pilates and yoga trainer, and founder, Kaizen. Whether you're a beginner looking to reap some of these mental health benefits or an experienced yogi trying to find peace, these tips can help you feel your best.
Dr Jain said 'yoga has emerged as a powerful and holistic tool in managing anxiety and depression', offering both physical and emotional relief through a blend of mindful movement, breath control, and meditation. She said: 'Unlike conventional treatments that often focus solely on symptom suppression, yoga addresses the root of mental unrest by calming the nervous system, improving self-awareness, and fostering inner balance.'
According to Dr Jain, regular yoga practice also boosts serotonin and endorphin levels, which are natural mood enhancers, making it especially beneficial for those struggling with fatigue and low motivation associated with depression. Moreover, the meditative aspect of yoga cultivates mindfulness, helping individuals break free from cycles of overthinking and emotional overwhelm, Dr Jain said.
"Research supports these benefits, with studies showing improvements in sleep quality, reduced cortisol levels, and decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression among consistent practitioners," she said and added that while yoga is not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment in severe cases, 'it serves as a valuable complementary therapy that enhances emotional resilience and promotes long-term mental well-being'. 'In a fast-paced world marked by constant stress, yoga offers a safe and sustainable path to mental clarity and inner peace,' Dr Jain said. She added that practices like pranayama (breathwork) help regulate the breath, reducing stress hormone levels and activating the parasympathetic nervous system to induce a state of relaxation. Dr Jain said: 'Gentle asanas such as Child's Pose, Cobra Pose, and Legs-Up-the-Wall have a grounding effect, easing physical tension while uplifting mood.'
Prerna further said, 'As someone who has dedicated their life to holistic wellness, I've seen firsthand how yoga can be a transformative tool in managing anxiety and depression. Yoga isn't just about movement — it's about coming home to yourself. Through breathwork (pranayama), mindful movement, and meditation, yoga helps regulate the nervous system, reduce cortisol levels, and improve emotional resilience.'
The more yoga you do, the more of a long-term improvement you'll see, as Prerna said 'consistent practice fosters greater self-awareness, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of peace'.
She explained, 'In my work, I incorporate practices like Flow Yoga and Shirodhara Yoga to help individuals reconnect with their inner stillness and create space for healing. The beauty of yoga lies in its ability to gently guide you out of a reactive mind and into the present moment, where anxiety cannot thrive. Over time, this consistent practice fosters greater self-awareness, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of peace. Yoga doesn't offer a quick fix — but it provides the tools to reclaim your mental and emotional wellbeing with grace and intention.'

Dietician recommends 5 simple ways to add dates to your diet and how many should you eat daily

Dates are more than just a topping for halwas. Yes, while they may be a hero ingredient, this dry fruit offers much more than that. They are a healthy fat considered as a sugar replacement and often used in the diet, but mindfully, of course. Simrat Kathuria, dietician and wellness coach, shared with HT Lifestyle how date or khajoor is gaining momentum in the advent of clean-eating behaviour. Dates contain fibre.(Shutterstock) Explaining the nutritional benefits of dates, she said, 'There has been much talk about sugar versus khajoor in the clean-eating movement, and rightly so, for it is a smart nutritional choice. Refined sugar is nutritionally devoid. It increases blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and lifestyle-related diseases of moderate notoriety: type 2 diabetes, PCOS, and fatty liver. On the other hand, the indigestible-fruit-sweetener could be more than a mere sugar load; it contains fibre, iron, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B6, and antioxidants such as flavonoids and carotenoids. Eating dates regularly in moderation supports good gut health, improves iron levels (especially a boon for women), and may help maintain heart health." (Shutterstock) The dietician shared five different ways to eat dates: Mix it with smoothies or protein shakes. Use it as a binder while preparing homemade energy balls or protein bars. Chop them up and add them to oats, yoghurt, or cereal. Use dates as a substitute for sugar in desserts like laddoos, cakes, or halwa. Stuff and eat for a quick snack. How many dates to eat in a day? Too much of anything isn't good, as after all, the very core principle of healthy eating is rooted in the understanding of fine balance. The same goes for dates, too. Even with their robust nutritional profile and health benefits, dates should be consumed in moderation to avoid excess calorie or sugar intake. Simrat shared the ideal date consumption throughout the day and added, 'If you wanted to consider dates, this comes into the picture because of their low to moderate glycaemic index. Their fibre content enables dates to release sugar more slowly into the bloodstream, thus preventing insulin spikes and subsequent energy crashes. This is great for keeping away sweet cravings; you only need 2-3 dates in the mid-morning or post-lunch to offer a clean energy boost. But it is also important to understand that dates are usually very calorie-dense. Thus, for most, anywhere from two to four medium-sized dates can be fine throughout the day.' Ayurveda's 'Natural Ozempic': The truth about berberine for weight loss

Walk into any health-conscious circle in the suburbs of Mumbai or browse a wellness forum in New Delhi, and you'll hear the murmurs. This conversation was once dominated by keto diets, weight-loss pills (injections included), and intermittent fasting. But now there is a new star. It's called 'Berberine'.Dubbed the "natural Ozempic" on social media, this is a bright yellow compound that is being hailed as a game-changer for weight management, blood sugar control, and even PCOS. But this isn't some new lab-synthesised marvel. For Indians, it's just a case of science finally catching up with ancient what's the story behind this so-called miracle herb? And should you be paying attention to it?WHAT IS BERBERINE? Before it became a viral hashtag, this was a key compound usually found in the roots, stems, and bark of various plants. In the Indian context, Berberine's most famous source is Daru Haldi, or Indian Barberry (Tree Turmeric). For generations, Ayurvedic practitioners have used this herb (it tastes bitter) to treat everything - from infections to digestive issues. In Chinese Yunani medicine, berberine has been used as a dietary supplement, to reduce fever, common cold, respiratory infections, and influenza. It is also used as an astringent agent to lower skin why are we talking about this herb right now?Scientists have found that berberine has a powerful impact on the AMP enzyme called the Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) which is your body's metabolic master switch. When that switch is on (or is activated), it signals your cells to stop storing fat and start burning energy more efficiently. This action has a cascade of positive effects, and that has got everyone so excited.A study published in a global journal Chronic Diseases and Translational Medicine highlights the key role of berberine in protecting against heart failure, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, insulin resistance, and TEXTS TO MODERN LABSThe hype isn't just based on trends alone. The herb is capturing the attention of both wellness enthusiasts and researchers because of its potential to:1. Regulate blood sugar: It is said to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce sugar production in the liver. Its effectiveness has been compared in some studies to Metformin, a frontline drug for Type 2 diabetes.2. Aid in weight management: By activating that AMPK switch, berberine may also help reduce fat storage and influence hormones that control appetite, leading to modest weight loss for some.A 2022 review examined the effect of berberine on body weight. The findings were startling: 23 that examined its effect on body mass index (BMI) showed a significant drop in both weight and BMI in people who took the herb.3. PCOS support: By improving insulin resistance, a key driver of PCOS, it is believed that berberine can help regulate menstrual cycles and manage metabolic symptoms EXPERTS SAYIndia Today spoke to two experts to understand the potential and the pitfalls of berberine. Dr. Priyanka Dhar, a renowned Consultant Endocrinologist based in New Delhi, offered a cautious comparison to Ozempic may be catchy, but it has only value in marketing. It is not clinically accurate. Both of these work via different mechanisms. We have noticed berberine's effect on AMPK activation. It appears to be significant and genuinely beneficial for metabolic health and insulin resistance," Dhar said, adding that the herb may at best be a natural adjunct to lifestyle changes but not a magic replacement for them."The key is medical guidance."According to an article published in the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, most of the studies on the weight-loss part of the berberine suffered from a risk of bias, and hence the results are known to be inconsistent."The weight-loss effect of the root herb may be linked to its laxative properties, but it cannot be considered as sustainable fat loss," asserts Dr. according to her, is berberine a natural type of Ozempic? "No, it is not."Weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and WeGovy are semaglutides, which act as a GLP-1 agonist. Their natural properties are to reduce appetite and slow digestion, resulting in weight loss. However, berberine's process of helping weight loss is different because it works by activating AMPK enzymes in the body, which work to regulate metabolism. Sometimes, this may result in weight loss Ashok Dwivedi, an Integrative Medicine Specialist from Sangli who blends Ayurveda with modern practice, said:"In Ayurveda, we have used 'Daru Haldi' for generations. It is known to support 'agni' (digestive fire) and address imbalances related to metabolism. We are seeing now that there is a validation of that knowledge through the lens of biochemistry. It's exciting. However, in Ayurveda, we never use a herb in isolation. It is part of a holistic approach that includes diet, lifestyle, and other medicinal herbs. People shouldn't just buy a bottle off the internet and start self-medicating. The source, purity, and dosage are critical to avoid side effects like digestive upset."THE CAVEATBefore you rush to add berberine to your cart, it's essential to understand its we have established earlier, berberine is not Ozempic. The latter is a powerful hormone modulator that has a much stronger effect on appetite and weight loss. Second, side effects of the herb are possible. The most common ones noted are digestive—cramping, diarrhoea, and constipation. This is often why it is recommended that you start with a low supplement market is not as strictly regulated as the pharmaceutical industry, hence the purity and potency of berberine supplements can differ significantly between importantly, talk to your doctor before self-prescribing. Berberine can interact with other medications (especially for diabetes and blood pressure) and is not suitable for everyone, particularly pregnant or breastfeeding ability to act as a metabolic "master switch" makes it a valuable tool for managing blood sugar, supporting weight goals, and helping with conditions like PCOS. However, it's a tool, not a most effective health plan will always be one that combines intelligent supplementation with a foundation of a balanced diet, regular movement, and, most importantly, the guidance of a qualified medical professional. The wisdom of Ayurveda and the rigour of modern medicine both agree on that.- Ends
