Investigating origin of Uiseong wildfire
A fire that broke out around 11:25 a.m. on March 22 there, is believed to have started what became South Korea's worst wildfires in history, claiming 30 lives.
On Sunday, the police booked a suspect for violating the Forest Protection Act for allegedly accidentally starting the fire while tending to a relative's grave. Earlier, they found a lighter near the burial mound. The police plan to conduct a face-to-face interrogation with the suspect once they gather further details from the investigation, including the results of a forensic analysis. (Photo by Yonhap)

Special counsel raids shaman linked to ex-first lady Kim
Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki's team investigating various allegations involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee on Tuesday raided the office of a controversial shaman linked to her alleged acceptance of luxury gifts from a religious group three years ago. The team sent prosecutors and investigators to the office of shaman Jeon Seong-bae, also known as Geon Jin, in Yeoksam-dong, southern Seoul, in the morning to secure documents and computer files related to his suspected delivery of gifts to Kim. Jeon is suspected of receiving a diamond necklace and an expensive bag from a high-ranking Unification Church official between April and August of 2022, soon after Yoon Suk Yeol's election as president in March of the same year, and delivering the gifts to Kim. The church official reportedly demanded some business favors from the Yoon government in return for the alleged gifts. Jeon has said he received the gifts but lost them all. (Yonhap)

Special counsel raids defense ministry, nat'l security office in Marine death probe
Special Prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon's team on Thursday raided the defense ministry and the presidential National Security Office as part of an investigation into allegations that top military officials and the presidential office intervened in an initial probe of the 2023 death of a young Marine. The team reportedly sent investigators to the NSO, the ministry's spokesperson's room, and other places and residences of those involved in the allegations in the morning to secure evidence. The team has been investigating the allegations that former President Yoon Suk Yeol vented his anger and took issue with the results of the military's investigation into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, who was swept away by a swollen stream during a search for torrential rain victims in July 2023. At that time, Yoon allegedly became "enraged," saying "Who would be willing to be a division commander if he is punished for an incident like this?" The team reportedly plans to seize NSO meeting minutes related to Yoon's alleged resentment and materials on the defense ministry's responses to media reports on the Marine's death. During a briefing, Assistant Special Prosecutor Jeong Min-young said the team will "look into what kind of contact the involved parties made via cell phones and other means," adding they will continue to do their utmost to determine the truth behind the allegations. Earlier in the day, the presidential office said it will actively cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the NSO. (Yonhap)
