Canada runs in eight tries in 50-20 rugby win over Springbok women in Pretoria

CBCa day ago
Florence Symonds and Alysha Corrigan scored two tries apiece to help Canada to a 50-20 win over South Africa in women's rugby play Saturday.
Despite the comfortable victory margin, it did not all go the second-ranked Canadians' way. The second half saw the 12th-ranked Springboks score 17 points and Canada lose several players to injury.
"I think we put in a big shift there," said Symonds, named player of the match. "I think we were down to 14 (players) at one point so we were thrown that challenge, I'm just really proud of the team."
The two teams meet again next Saturday at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. The Canadian women will then have just two more outings before the Rugby World Cup kicks off Aug. 22 in England.
DaLeaka Menin, Fancy Bermudez, Laetitia Royer and Caroline Crossley also scored tries for Canada, which led 26-3 at halftime. Julia Schell kicked five conversions.
The win looked for a while like it had come at a cost when, early in the second half, Bermudez was taken off the field on a cart after an apparent leg injury. Rugby Canada said later Bermudez had rejoined the team after being medically cleared.
Olivia Apps shifted to the wing in place of Bermudez, with Justine Pelletier taking over at scrum half, before she herself hobbled off in the 60th minute.
Jakkie Cilliers, Byrhandre Dolf and Sizophila Solontsi scored tries for South Africa. Cilliers also booted a penalty and conversion.
The game at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, the 51,762-capacity stadium that is home to the Vodacom Bulls, was a curtain-raiser for the men's test match between the top-ranked Springboks and No. 10 Italy.
Injured South African men's captain Siya Kolisi delivered the pre-game team talk to the Springbok women.
It was 17 C in the early-afternoon sunshine at kickoff and Canada started brightly, with Menin powering her way over from close range in the sixth minute to cap a 12-phase attack for a converted try.
The physicality of the Springboks was demonstrated in the 12th minute when Solontsi, a flanker, sent captain Alex Tessier flying backwards as the Canadian captain attempted an open-field tackle. Soon after South Africa showed another side of its game, winning a scrum penalty that led to a penalty kick cutting the lead to 7-3 in the 14th minute.
An overlap in the Canadian backline after a scrum led to a Bermudez try in the 17th minute to up the lead to 12-3. Schell's conversion attempt hit the goalpost.
Unforced errors ended several subsequent Canadian attacks while South Africa conceded a string of penalties. Canada upped its lead to 19-3 in the 29th minute when Bermudez cut through the Springbok defence before feeding Symonds, who outpaced a Springbok chaser for a converted try — her first for Canada in 15s play.
Royer scored Canada's fourth try in the 34th minute after South Africa fell asleep at the breakdown. Another Symonds try in the 38th minute was called off upon video review for a knock-on in the buildup.
South Africa conceded eight penalties in the first half.
Cilliers scored the Springboks' first try in the 44th minute, after Solontsi broke several tackles to spark the attack. But Canada answered immediately, with Symonds ripping the ball free from a Springbok on the ensuing kickoff and Corrigan getting to the loose ball first for a try and a 31-10 lead.
Canada added another Corrigan try in the 57th minute with South Africa answering with tries by Dolfi (62nd minute) and Sizophila Solontsi (69th) to cut the lead to 38-20.
Symonds scored her second try in the 79th minute and Crossley, a member of the Canadian sevens squad making her fifth 15s appearance, added an intercept try in the 80th minute.
Canadian hooker Holly Phillips made her debut off the bench in the 53rd minute. Tyson Beukeboom, the most capped Canadian women's rugby player, earned her 75th cap coming in at the 64-minute mark, while fellow forwards Gillian Boag and McKinley Hunt earned their 30th cap.
Star forward Sophie de Goede, Canada's captain when healthy, was not in Saturday's matchday squad. Returning from a knee injury, de Goede is expected to see action in the Springboks rematch.
The game was the fifth meeting between the two sides and the first on South Africa soil.
Canada thumped South Africa 66-7 the last time they met, in March 2023 in Madrid. The Canadians also won in three meetings at the Nations Cup: 53-15 in 2013 in Colorado and 52-17 and 35-17 in 2011 and 2009 in Oakville, Ont.
Up next
After the South Africa tour, Canada plays the ninth-ranked United States on Aug. 1 in Ottawa and No. 5 Ireland on Aug. 9 in Dublin. The Canadian women open the World Cup in England against No. 15 Fiji on Aug. 23 in York, then face No. 10 Wales on Aug. 30 in Manchester and No. 7 Scotland on Sept. 6 in Exeter.
South Africa will play out of Group D with No. 4 France, No. 8 Italy and No. 28 Brazil.
Canada improved to 13-5-1 since finishing fourth at the last World Cup. Four of the losses were to top-ranked England, with the other to No. 3 New Zealand.

Soccer legend Lionel Messi scores twice in Inter Miami's 4-1 win over CF Montreal

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi (10) arrives ahead of MLS soccer action against CF Montreal, in Montreal, on Saturday, July 5, 2025. (Christopher Katsarov/The Canadian Press) George Campbell was chasing Lionel Messi down the field, hoping to halt the Argentine superstar's run. A second later, Campbell found himself tangled up with a teammate. And Messi was smashing a shot into the top-right corner after slicing through a crowd of blue jerseys. 'He changes directions faster than anyone I've seen,' said Campbell, a CF Montreal centre back. 'Sometimes you just can't keep up.' Messi — widely regarded as one of the all-time greats — put on a show Saturday with two stellar goals and an assist to lead Inter Miami past Montreal 4-1 in MLS play. The 38-year-old scored in the first half with a curling shot into the bottom-left corner. Then he delivered a highlight-reel goal reminiscent of his FC Barcelona days, giving Miami a 4-1 lead in the 62nd minute and leaving Campbell and his teammates out of answers. 'You see the replay like, you could almost look back in hindsight and say you could do better,' Campbell said. 'But we need to live in the moment more and just make sure that when we have the opportunity, we need to make sure the ball goes in the stands and not in the back of the net.' Tadeo Allende and Telasco Segovia also scored for Miami (9-3-5) at a raucous Stade Saputo as Messi mania arrived in Montreal. Prince Owusu replied with his fourth in four games for Montreal (3-13-5). Head coach Marco Donadel's side sits last in the Eastern Conference and has just one home win in 10 outings, a 1-0 victory over New York City FC last Saturday. The sellout crowd featured plenty of Argentine blue and Inter Miami pink — one fan even wore a Messi tracksuit and goat mask. When the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner took a corner kick early on, spectators left their seats and piled into the lower parts of the stands to get a closer look. And the 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' chants were constant, whether Miami trailed or led by three goals, upsetting some Montreal players. 'We all respect them, we all admire Messi. But of course, you don't want your fans chanting his name, especially losing 4-1,' Montreal midfielder Caden Clark said. 'I understand the greatness he has, and I have respect for our fans. 'But we also don't appreciate that.' Hordes of fans also swarmed a downtown Montreal hotel to catch a glimpse of the global icon after he landed in Montreal on Friday night. Many more lined the streets with signs outside Stade Saputo hours before kickoff to watch Messi step off the team bus. Clark felt the circus around Messi's arrival was a distraction, while Campbell and Donadel said they expected a noisy evening. Not only was Messi on the pitch, fellow former Barcelona stars Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also highlighted a talent-packed starting 11. 'It's nothing strange. It's also normal, in front of us there were one or two players, maybe three, who were a great inspiration for many people,' Donadel said. Added Campbell: 'One of the most famous people in the world, so we knew that was going to happen.' It was Messi's fourth match on Canadian soil, and second in Montreal. He played his first professional game in Canada on May 11, 2024, when he was held off the scoresheet in a 3-2 Miami win over Montreal. Messi's performance Saturday was entirely different, even though it got off to a rocky start. On only his second touch of the night, Messi gifted Owusu a costly giveaway. Owusu immediately blasted a shot past Miami 'keeper Óscar Ustari from the edge of the box to open the scoring two minutes in. Miami then equalized in the 33rd minute when Allende scored with a long-range shot after receiving the ball from Messi. Miami's superstar then dribbled into the box, cut to his left foot and gave the visiting side a 2-1 lead before halftime. After Segovia put Miami ahead 3-1, Messi danced through the Montreal defence and buried his second of the night — and 12th of the season. 'I still enjoy to watch him play,' said Miami coach Javier Mascherano, a former Messi teammate with Argentina and Barcelona. 'As a coach, for me it's a privilege to coaching him. And when I say coaching him, it's a way to say that I am the coach, because no one can coach Messi.' The score was lopsided, but Miami only outshot Montreal 15-13, including 9-8 on target, while holding 58 per cent of possession. Montreal had several chances to build on its 1-0 lead in a wide-open, attacking game, but failed to capitalize before Messi took over. 'We had to be much more smart there and mature,' Donadel said. 'It was not the best way to deal with (being up) 1-0 against Miami.' Whyte kicks walk-off field goal as Lions rally to beat Alouettes 21-20

B.C. Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke throws a shovel pass during first half CFL football action against the Montreal Alouettes in Montreal, Saturday, July 5, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Graham Hughes The Montreal Alouettes celebrated Super Hero Night on Saturday at Percival Molson Stadium. However, when the game clock struck zero, it was B.C.'s star quarterback and veteran kicker who saved the day. Sean Whyte's 43-yard field goal on the final play of the game lifted the B.C. Lions to a stunning come-from-behind 21-20 win over the Montreal Alouettes. 'I'm just so proud of these guys,' said Whyte. 'We really needed a win. We needed to get the ball rolling and get some momentum. We finally got it. It's really cool. I'm so happy.' Whyte's walk-off winner, his third field goal of the CFL contest, was aided by Montreal lineman Pier-Olivier Lestage's late 15-yard penalty, shortening the field for Whyte and the Lions to rally. 'Anything they say to you, anything they do to you, cannot result in an action that would get a 15-yard penalty,' said Alouettes head coach Jason Maas. 'He's remorseful about it. I know he's been very good about that and trying to be a disciplined football player, but he just let the emotions get the best of him in that part.' Trailing 17-12 as time wound down in the fourth quarter, Lions' quarterback Nathan Rourke connected on a 46-yard touchdown pass to Stanley Berryhill the Third to put the Lions ahead 18-17. The Alouettes responded with a 24-yard field by Jose Maltos with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter to go ahead 20-18. The Lions quickly moved the ball downfield on the ensuing kickoff, setting up Whyte for his last-play heroics. Rourke was making his first start for B.C. since June 12 after missing his team's last two games with an oblique injury. He went 22-for-36, throwing for 352 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown. 'No one works harder than Nathan Rourke,' Whyte added. 'I'm so proud of him as well. Mistakes are going to happen, but he clutched up at the end to put a drive like that together and get us into range to score points. That was a full team win and I'm just so happy for the whole team.' The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Lions, who improved to 2-3. McLeod Bethel-Thompson, starting his second straight game at quarterback in place of the injured Davis Alexander, completed 15 of 23 pass attempts, good for 192 yards and two touchdowns. 'It's a loss,' said Bethel-Thompson. 'There's no individual performance. It's just a loss. 'There's a lot of big plays we left out there, a lot of inches that we couldn't quite accomplish. If we don't kick ourselves in the foot, we should be pulling away with these games.' Alouettes running back Sean Thomas-Erlington, who played in his 100th career CFL game, collected 76 yards and scored his first receiving touchdown of the season. It marked the Montreal native's fifth career non-rushing touchdown and his first since 2023. Tyson Philpot also scored his team-leading third touchdown of the season for Montreal. The Alouettes (3-2) enter their first of three scheduled bye weeks of the season on a two-game losing skid. The loss was also their fifth straight loss against the Lions dating back to July of 2023. Montreal has yet to win a game against B.C. under current head coach Jason Maas. 'We stick together and we work,' said Maas. 'That's what we've got to continue to do. I want them to enjoy the bye week, too, because that's what's on our schedule right now. When we come back, they better be willing and ready to work. We've got to learn some lessons from this game and continue to grind.' B.C.'s 43-yard offensive drive to start the game was quickly negated by the Alouettes. Rourke's long down field pass attempt to Keon Hatcher in the Lions' end zone was intercepted by Alouettes' defensive back Kabion Ento. Montreal quickly took advantage of the B.C. turnover. Bethel-Thompson found running back Thomas-Erlington for consecutive first-downs, good for 35 total yards. On just the third play of the drive, Bethel-Thompson's short pass to Philpot resulted in a 45-yard touchdown run by the wide receiver that gave the Alouettes an early 7-0 lead. Rourke then led his team on a 72-yard drive, capped off by his two-yard run into the end zone during the opening minute of the second quarter. Whyte's convert attempt was blocked by the Alouettes' Shawn Oakman to preserve Montreal's 7-6 lead. Maltos' 44-yard missed field goal attempt on the Alouettes' ensuing possession opened the door for Rourke and the Lions' offence to pick up right where they left off. The B.C. pivot orchestrated a 12-play, 64-yard drive, resulting in a 24-yard field goal by Whyte at 12:22 of the second quarter to give the Lions their first lead of the game. That lead would be short-lived, however, in large part thanks to B.C.'s lack of discipline. The Alouettes took advantage of a pair of infractions by the visitors, including an illegal contact penalty on defensive back Robert Carter that gave Montreal a first down at B.C.'s 14-yard line. Bethel-Thompson's pass to Thomas-Erlington on the next play put Montreal back in front 14-9, a lead they would take into halftime. Despite his team's victory, Lions head coach Buck Pierce knows his team can still be a whole lot better. 'Obviously, it feels good to win, but there's a lot of mistakes that we've got to fix,' said Pierce. 'We'll be happy tonight, but we have a lot of room for growth and that's the exciting part about this group.' UP NEXT Lions: Visit the Edmonton Elks on Sunday, July 13. Alouettes: Host the Toronto Argonauts on Thursday, July 17. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 5, 2025. Jordan Stoopler, The Canadian Press
