Debt linked to popular Hong Kong actor Jacky Heung repaid, Macau casino ends legal action
The casino company made the statement on Wednesday, a day after media reported that subsidiary MGM Grand Paradise had issued a writ against Heung.
The actor was sued for at least HK$1.4 million (US$178,000) over gambling debts, according to the court document.
'The matter involving Mr. Jacky Heung Cho arose from a credit guarantee he provided for a third party. Due to overdue payments not being made, MGM China subsequently initiated standard legal procedures to address the related matters,' MGM China said.
'Recently, all payments have been fully settled and the corresponding legal procedures have been terminated.'
Clarifying the situation, MGM China said that it was not its usual practice to engage with the media regarding internal gaming operational processes.
'But in view of the inconvenience and distress this incident has caused Mr Jacky Heung Cho, our company sincerely requests that all inaccurate or speculative reporting be curbed,' it said.
Heung acting as a credit guarantor was not mentioned in the court document.
According to the writ filed with the Hong Kong District Court on July 3, Heung was said to have borrowed HK$2 million from the casino operator on December 1 last year and converted the money into betting chips.
The document went on to say that Heung had only repaid some of the money and owed the casino HK$1.4 million.
The 40-year-old actor is the eldest son of Hong Kong producer Charles Heung Wah-keung, founder of the entertainment conglomerate China Star Entertainment.
The actor has been active in the entertainment industry, featuring in numerous martial arts films in supporting roles.
In recent years, Heung has shifted his career focus to mainland China, taking part in various variety show programmes.
He married the renowned Taiwanese actress and model, Bea Hayden, whose Chinese name is Guo Biting, in 2019. The couple have two children. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

Malaysia To Host Second Round Of EU Free Trade Talks In November
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is expected to host the second round of negotiations for the Malaysia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) in November 2025, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The ministry said the first round of MEUFTA talks took place in Brussels, Belgium, from June 30 to July 4, 2025, with 21 chapters currently under negotiation with the European Union (EU). 'In addition to traditional chapters such as trade in goods, rules of origin, customs and trade facilitation, services, and investment, the FTA with the EU also includes new chapters such as sustainable food systems and trade and sustainable development -- topics which were not included when talks first began in 2010,' MITI said in a written reply published on the Parliament website today. The response was to a question by Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad (BN–Simpang Renggam) on whether MITI plans to resume FTA talks with the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the areas of focus. MITI added that in 2024, bilateral trade between Malaysia and the EU reached RM218.9 billion (US$1=RM4.23), with exports totalling RM115.8 billion and imports RM103.1 billion. Malaysia's main exports to the EU included electrical and electronic products, manufactured goods, palm oil and related products, processed foods, and optical and scientific equipment. From 2021 to 2024, the total approved investments from EU countries in Malaysia's manufacturing and services sectors, overseen by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), amounted to RM198.2 billion. Meanwhile, on the Malaysia-GCC FTA, Malaysia signed a joint statement with the GCC on May 26, 2025, to launch negotiations on an FTA between the two parties. The first round of negotiations is scheduled to take place in September 2025.

IILM's US$800 Mln Short-term Sukuk Oversubscribed 2.3 Times
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM) has reissued a total of US$800 million (US$1=RM4.23) in short-term sukuk across three tenors, with the offering oversubscribed by 2.3 times. In a statement today, IILM said the auction attracted US$1.9 billion in bids from its network of primary dealers and global investors. It said the issuance comprised a US$305 million two-week tenor at 4.40 per cent, a US$355 million three-month tenor at 4.49 per cent, and a US$140 million six-month tenor at 4.38 per cent. 'Today's successful completion of the short-term sukuk transaction marks the IILM's 13th auction year-to-date with a cumulative issuance of US$13.15 billion across 39 sukuk series of varying tenors,' IILM said. Chief executive officer Mohamad Safri Shahul Hamid said the outcome reflected continued investor interest in shariah-compliant liquidity instruments, despite prevailing global uncertainties. 'Today's auction outcome underscores the continued strength of investor demand for high-quality Islamic liquidity instruments, despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding the United States (US) Federal Reserve's rate trajectory and broader shifts in global monetary policy,' he said. Mohamad Safri added that financial markets remain cautious as central banks weigh persistent inflationary pressures against signs of moderating economic growth. 'The IILM's consistent ability to attract strong participation across all tenors reflects the market's confidence in our sukuk programme as a dependable tool for short-term liquidity management,' he said. The IILM's short-term sukuk programme is rated A-1 by S&P Global Ratings and F1 by Fitch Ratings, with a total issuance limit of US$6 billion.

Chinese actor Zhang Yiyang executed by firing squad after murdering underage girlfriend
Chinese singer-actor Zhang Yiyang was executed by firing squad on Dec 18, 2024, after being convicted of the murder of his 16-year-old girlfriend. He was 33 at the time of his death. According to a recently released court document from the Intermediate People's Court of Xianyang City in Shaanxi province, Zhang lured the victim – who was 15 when they started dating – into a forest in Xingping city on Feb 26, 2022. When she expressed her intention to end the relationship, a heated argument broke out, during which Zhang fatally stabbed her in the neck. Following the attack, Zhang returned home to change his clothes and disposed of both the bloodied garments and the victim's mobile phone by throwing them into a river. He then checked into a hotel, where he attempted to take his own life but was discovered by a staff member who alerted the police. The court described Zhang's actions as extremely violent and socially harmful. His pattern of emotional manipulation, including repeated threats of suicide to control the victim, further influenced the court's decision to uphold his death sentence after a failed appeal. The case sent shockwaves across mainland China. It marks the first time a celebrity in the country was legally executed for a criminal offense.
