Rangers transfer news as Vaclav Cerny put up for sale, Dessers to AEK fee 'distance' revealed and Igamane latest

Daily Record7 days ago
It's going to be a busy window at Ibrox and we have the latest on three key men from last season
Vaclav Cerny has been told he is up for sale by Wolfsburg after showdown talks with their new manager Paul Simonis - as AEK Athens need to stump up around £1million if they want to get Cyriel Dessers.
Former Rangers winger Cerny enjoyed an excellent loan spell in Govan, but the Ibrox club didn't have an agreement in place for a purchase option with the Bundesliga club.

He was set to return to pre-season training in Germany and his future hinged on whether the club's new manager, Dutch boss Simonis, would see him as part of his plans.

But reports in Germany have confirmed Cerny is now officially on the transfer list with Wolfsburg having to seriously cut their bloated squad for the new season because of ongoing financial problems with owners, German car giants Volkswagen, who have their headquarters in the Lower Saxony city.
They are planning to lay off around 35,000 of their workforce - a quarter of their entire total - to save an estimated £3.5billion over the next five years.
Those measures have filtered their way back to the football club, who will make severe cuts and trim their playing staff too.
And Cerny has been told he will be allowed to leave, along with Tiago Tomas, who has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen, with the sale of both of them expected to bring in a sizeable bonanza for Wolfsburg.
Former Celtic defender Moritz Jenz has also been told he is surplus to requirements, along with Bartol Franjic, Nicolas Cozza and Kofi Amoako.

Meanwhile, Dessers remains a target for Greek giants AEK Athens and Record Sport revealed personal terms have been agreed with the player.
But reports in Greece say that there is 'about €1m distance' between the two clubs with talks ongoing for the Nigeria international who is their top target.
Dessers' fellow Ibrox striker Hamza Igamane has also reportedly agreed personal terms with Lille but the Rangers Review say that while the French club have spoken to the player's camp, they have yet to make an official approach over the Moroccan, but say he "is likely to leave" this summer.

Viktor Gyokeres may finally get transfer wish after taking drastic action

Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign coveted striker Viktor Gyokeres after fresh escalation in bitter row between Sweden star and current club Sporting Lisbon Viktor Gyokeres' forceful push to be granted a Sporting Lisbon exit is set to succeed with latest reports suggesting the Sweden striker is closer to securing a switch to Arsenal after agreeing personal terms. And despite Sporting chief Federico Varandas furiously saying last month that 'threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me' after Gyokeres allegedly personally phoned him to say he would not play for the club again, while the star's agent was actively doing his best to ensure a transfer, there is a growing belief that the Portuguese club may be left with no other option but to sanction a deal. ‌ Sporting have made it clear for months that they will not accept anything less than their £85m asking price for their top scorer. The Gunners, who may now look to halt their interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, reportedly had a bid of about £60m rejected by Sporting last month. ‌ But after yesterday confirming the signing of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in a cut price £5m deal from Chelsea, overnight reports from French newspaper L'Equipe referring to Gyokeres' agent suggest that there is an agreement over personal terms and a five-year deal between the player and Arsenal. That will be viewed as an escalation in a row between club and player that has long turned bitter. Arsenal are also pushing ahead with a deal for the Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi, though adding a striker remains the window's top priority. Gyokeres joined Sporting two years ago from Coventry City in a club record €20m (£17.2m) deal and has a contract that runs until the summer of 2028. His current club insist that they will only sell when a €100m (£86m) release clause is activated but Gyokeres has claimed he made a gentleman's agreement with the hierarchy last year that they would let him depart for €80m (£68m). That has been strenuously denied by Varandas, who saw Gyokeres score 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions last season. ‌ Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Gyokeres, though their attention now appears to be on Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo having already added Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5m. United must also offload several unwanted stars, including Marcus Rashford and Antony, to fund further spending in the summer window.

Sonay Kartal open to suggestions over her next tattoo after reaching third round

The 23-year-old continued her love affair with Court Three by brushing aside Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova 6-2 6-2 in just over an hour to reach the third round for the second straight year. Kartal has a large collection of tattoos and is planning to add another after the end of the tournament, with the British number three calling on fans to help her choose. 'I'm open to suggestions,' she said. 'If people throw me some good ideas, I will definitely consider them – 90 per cent I would end up going with one of those ideas.' The heat of the first two days was replaced by morning rain, delaying the start of play for two hours. Tomova, a 30-year-old ranked 111 who has never been beyond the second round of a slam, profited from the retirement of Ons Jabeur in her first match and for five games she tested Kartal. But, once the British number three – who claimed her best grand slam victory in round one against Jelena Ostapenko on the same court – was able to exploit Tomova's limitations in movement, Kartal pulled away, breaking for 4-2 and going on an eight-game winning run. Super Sonay does it in style 💥 Sonay Kartal defeats Viktoriya Tomova 6-2, 6-2 to reach the third round for the second year in a row 💪#Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 2, 2025 Tomova turned to her support camp in exasperation early in the second set, at a loss as to how to find a hole in the rock solid game of her opponent. Kartal had a slight wobble at 4-0, losing two games in a row, but she wrapped up victory after only 67 minutes and will now try to break new ground by making the fourth round at a slam for the first time. 'That match today was a very clean match from me,' she said. 'I don't think I did much wrong at all. I was seeing it really well. I felt confident. I feel like I was playing really aggressive tennis. Did exactly what me and the coach wanted to go out and do. So very happy with the performance today.' Kartal appears to have a great chance of going further with another unseeded opponent next in French qualifier Diane Parry. She is taking pride at having backed up last year's run, and proving to herself that her heavy topspin game can give her major opportunities on grass as well as the other surfaces. 'I think having a home slam, I think that's one arena I really want to perform well in front of the people that mean the most to me, friends and family and everyone,' she said. 'Also, it's a surface that doesn't really come naturally to me. I have to really think and adapt my game style, which I think is also going to help me develop beyond this tournament as well. 'I have to be really aggressive. That's something I need to do to get better at in my game outside of Wimbledon. I think if I can be aggressive on grass, I can prove to myself that I can do it and I can do it against the best players.'
