
Pebble with finger print suggests Neanderthal may have created art
"The ocher dot does not appear as a shapeless addition or a mere stain," wrote lead author David Alvarez-Alonso of Madrid's Complutense University. "Rather, it contains a fingerprint that implies the pigment has been applied specifically with the tip of a finger soaked in pigment."
The authors consider the artifact a nonutilitarian visual symbol - in other words, not a tool but an altered or marked object with possible symbolic significance. While its age makes it impossible to draw any definitive conclusions, they wrote, the stone could "represent one of the oldest known abstractions of a human face in the prehistoric record."

"The fact that the pebble was selected because of its appearance and then marked with ocher shows that there was a human mind capable of symbolizing, imagining, idealizing and projecting his or her thoughts on an object," they wrote.
An expanding Neanderthal portfolio
This isn't the first time a Neanderthal fingerprint has been pinpointed, the authors noted. A partial one, likely made by a thumb, was found on resin discovered in Germany in 1963.
However, the discovery offers yet another dab of evidence suggesting that Neanderthals made art. In 2018, The Guardian reported archaeological findings in Spain indicating that Neanderthals used red ocher to produce shapes and symbols on cave walls 65,000 years ago.
The species flourished from roughly 350,000 to 40,000 years ago, and studies indicate they and modern humans may have gone their separate ways as long as 800,000 years ago.
Increasing evidence has indicated that Neanderthals were more advanced than once thought.
In 2020, a paper published in the journal Science said evidence found in a coastal cave in Portugal suggested Neanderthals were skilled fishermen who regularly consumed seafood as part of their diet. Until then, only humans (Homo sapiens) had been thought to look to the sea as a food source.
Meanwhile, the discovery of 176,000-year-old structures deep within a French cave hinted at Neanderthals' ability to use fire and work in groups. A 2016 article in Nature described strange, circular edifices constructed in an interior space 360 yards removed from daylight; the formations were made from uniform stalagmites, many of them cut to size.
With the earliest known human-built structures 40,000 years old, the cave formations not only predate such activity by Homo sapiens but also show Neanderthal utilization of deep caves began much earlier as well. According to the study, the earliest indications of modern humans using deep caves are less than 42,000 years old.

They are the world's oldest ice cores, which have just landed in the UK after being drilled from the depths of Antarctica. While most of Britain is reeling from weeks of back-to-back heatwaves, scientists in Cambridge find out what the rare blocks of ice can reveal about climate change and our home planet. But to get hold of the ice, they first had to drill for 1.7 miles down the ice sheet at the South Pole. The giant stick of ice was then cut into more manageable chunks and transported to Europe. Scientists hope the pieces will reveal why the planet's climate cycle shifted more than a million years ago, helping to predict Earth's future response to rising greenhouse gas. Dr Liz Thomas, from the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, told Reuters: 'We really are exploring a completely unknown time in our history. 'We are hoping to unlock all these amazing secrets.' The new core ice, which was drilled near the Concordia research station in the 'White Continent,' beats the previous 800,000-year-old ice, which was drilled in the early 2000s. Until now, scientists have relied on marine sediments to study the climate cycles. over millions of years. But ice has a special feature invisible to the naked eye – entrapped bubbles showing the atmospheric conditions, amount of greenhouse gas in the air and chemical evidence of temperatures at the time when they were released. And to not make the job too easy for the scientists, Antarctica is the only place on Earth where such a long record of the atmosphere is found. Summer temperatures at the French-Italian Concordia station range from -30°C to -50°C, and can reach a brain-numbing -80°C in winter. Dr Thomas continued: 'Our data will yield the first continuous reconstructions of key environmental indicators—including atmospheric temperatures, wind patterns, sea ice extent, and marine productivity—spanning the past 1.5 million years. 'This unprecedented ice core dataset will provide vital insights into the link between atmospheric CO₂ levels and climate during a previously uncharted period in Earth's history, offering valuable context for predicting future climate change.' The world's largest ice sheet remains shrouded in mystery and intrigue as relatively little is still known about Antarctica. France's new rocket Baguette One to go where no baker has gone before
If seeing a gigantic baguette flying in space is on your bucket list, do we have news for you. Well, kind of. France will soon have a new player in the space race – a rocket called Baguette One. Humankind reaching the heavens was once unthinkable, with the rockets that have made it possible named after ancient gods like Apollo or mythical creatures like Pegasus. Then there's the boulangerie name that the Bordeaux-based start-up HyPrSpace has come up with for its 10-metre-high pocket rocket. Baguette One is intended to be a trial run for the company's larger rocket, the Orbital Baguette One (or OB-1, pronounced 'Obiwan', a nod to the Star Wars Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi). HyPrSpace CEO, Sylvain Bataillard, said she wanted to be 'serious but not sinister' when it came to picking a name. But the name wasn't quite serious enough for the presenters at TFI, France's main broadcaster, when they covered the Baguette One yesterday. When journalist Adrien Portron began giving a rundown on the rocket to the panel, even he struggled to keep a straight face when they were shown an AI-generated image of a baguette on a launchpad. Both baguette rockets are micro-launchers – delivery vans for small, 300kg satellites that drift just above the Earth's atmosphere. 'To understand, we can compare heavy-lift launchers to micro-launchers,' Bataillard told CNews. 'A micro-launcher is like a 'taxi' with a high fare currently between $40,000 and $50,000 per kilo to take it into space. A large launcher is like a bus with fares less than $10,000 per kilo. 'But with our rocket, we could offer a 'taxi' for around €20,000/kg.' These cosmic cabs will rely on a cheap, eco-friendly engine (at least, in the multi-million world of spacecraft propulsion systems), Bataillard said. Rather than using rocket fuel, 'space bakers' designed hybrid boosters that use a mixture of solid and liquid propellants, such as recycled plastic. Neither of the baguettes will use a turbopump, a costly piece of equipment which pushes high-pressure fluid into the engine's combustion chamber. Baguette One will be launched from one of three military bases next year -Biscarrosse, Saint-Médard-en-Jalles or Île du Levant – making it the first rocket launch in metropolitan France. HyPrSpace's Baguette One isn't a half-baked idea, though. Backed by President Emmanuel Macron, the firm received €35million (about £30million) in subsidies last year. This is part of the French government's France 2030, a fund that invests in innovative technologies. French defence officials have expressed an interest in HyPrSpace's propulsion technology as a novel way to chuck satellites into space. More than 26,000 satellites will be launched by 2032, amounting to eight satellites a day, consultancy firm Novaspace estimates. Elon Musk's rocket company, SpaceX, owns around two-thirds of the sofa-sized orbiters whizzing above your head right now, according to the satellite tracker CelesTrak. Yet studies have shown that all this hardware above our heads means more harmful metals lingering in the atmosphere, while some space officials worry that the final frontier is becoming a celestial rubbing tip. Bataillard, however, remains optimistic. 'Space today is like the internet in the 1990s,' she added. 'We know that a lot of things are going to happen.' There's lots of Al-Shamahi walking across a barren landscape into the sunset. And there are living, moving dioramas of people posing as our ancestors as they herd goats through the dust. 'If we were to look into their eyes, into those quite delicate features,' she gushes, 'would we see ourselves within them?' All of this touch-feelyness, however, can't obscure the general jaw-dropping nature of the whole thing – not least the massive twists of fate and fortune that led to you, and me, and them, being here, together. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad There are new breakthroughs to suggest that East Africa was not the cradle of civilisation it was thought to be, but that homo sapiens developed across Africa, spreading and intermingling and co-operating in such a way as to ensure our survival above the other human species. 'We don't know if they interacted,' says Al-Shamahi, but it sounds like a pitch for a good sitcom. Meanwhile, we see how the ability to think in the abstract, to see snakes caught in the rocks, to offer gifts and to make art showed the development of the human brain to see beyond the concrete and come up with new advances. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Much of it is mind-boggling, not only because of the sheer amount of knowledge being dropped on, but the whole sweeping vastness of time thing. But it looks fantastic, keeps a light touch with its learning, and Al-Shamahi is an engaging, passionate presenter who looks like she could do for skulls and beads what Cox did for moon rocks and sunspots. And, more importantly, it brings our ancestors into sharper focus – their way of being 'connected and co-operative' - and makes you think that maybe they had the right idea in the first place. If we can get along at that wedding, why not try it in the wider world?
