U.S. President Donald Trump's recent threats to put a 100 per cent tariff on films made outside the U.S. was not the news the lagging B.C. film business wanted to hear.

'The pandemic, the strike, the reduction in productions all over North America, and now Mr. Trump. To say that the cumulative effect has been less than positive is an understatement,' said veteran location scout Tonya Hartz. Hartz, who worked on productions such as Watchmen, See, So Help Me Todd, counts herself among the lucky ones working consistently since the strikes.

But that hasn't been the case for many others in her field.

'Scouts are paying bills instead of buying groceries,' said Hartz. 'The only ones that can survive an enduring cycle like this one are the highest-paid categories, the most senior members with deep savings, or members who have side hustles.'

Film and TV production business is down 20 per cent across the globe. The lingering effects of major strikes, budget cuts by streaming services, and studios shifting toward more conservative, share-price positive, business models have led to a major industry contraction.

Here in B.C., the industry expects about 30 productions to be rolling during its usual peak summer season. In good years, that number would easily be double.

According to Creative B.C., the province's TV and film industry, the third-largest production hub in North America after Los Angeles and New York, contributed $2 billion to the provincial GDP in 2023, employing around 26,000 full-time workers. Those numbers are down substantially from 2022, when the industry employed close to 50,000 full-time workers and contributed $2.7 billion.

'We've got 15 signed productions under our agreement,' said business representative Crystal Braunwarth. That number would have been double in 2020, Braunwarth said.

With production numbers already down, Trump's Truth Social statement spread further unease across the industry. Braunwarth said she fielded over 50 calls from members after Trump's post went up.

'Our members have been through a lot over the last four years,' said Braunwarth. 'So it's another thing that we are going to face — whatever it is.'

However, the final tariff rates and product lists remain flexible, allowing India to adjust depending on the escalating impact of the U.S.'s trade actions. The dispute stems from the U.S.'s initial move in 2018, when it imposed a 25 percent tariff on certain steel products and 10 percent on aluminum, citing national security concerns. In response, India raised tariffs in 2019 on 28 U.S. products, including almonds and walnuts, and also filed a complaint with the WTO. This current development comes amid ongoing negotiations for a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) between the two countries. An Indian delegation is scheduled to visit Washington next week to continue trade discussions.

WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Trump administration has started sending some weapons to Ukraine again, just a week after the Pentagon told officials to pause some shipments, U.S. officials said on July 9. The weapons being sent include 155 mm artillery shells and precision-guided rockets called GMLRS, according to two officials who spoke anonymously because the information hadn't been made public. It's not clear exactly when the shipments began moving again. Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a pause on some weapon deliveries so the Pentagon could check how much it had left in stock. The White House was surprised by this decision. However, a White House official said that there was no "pause" but rather a review to ensure that the aid complies with U.S. military plans. The Pentagon never officially announced a pause. Still, during a press briefing last week, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said he couldn't share details about which weapons were paused or when they would be delivered. He said the president and the defense secretary would make those decisions. The pause affected several weapons, including Patriot missiles, GMLRS rockets, Hellfire missiles, and Howitzer ammunition. This surprised not only Ukraine and U.S. allies but also some U.S. lawmakers and even other departments in the Trump administration, like the State Department. It's still unclear if Patriot missile shipments are on hold. These missiles are very expensive—about US$4 million each—and are in high demand. According to people familiar with the situation, Trump was upset with the Pentagon for announcing the pause without checking with the White House first. The Pentagon denied that Hegseth acted alone, saying the plan was discussed across the government and meant to help the president decide on military aid. Meanwhile, Russia has stepped up its air attacks on Ukraine, including the biggest drone strike in one night since the war began three years ago, Ukrainian officials said. Trump also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, "He's not treating people right… too many are dying." That, Trump said, was why he approved sending more defensive weapons to Ukraine. The 155 mm artillery shells are some of the most used in the war. They're about 2 feet long, weigh 100 pounds, and are fired from large guns called Howitzers. These can hit targets up to 15 to 20 miles away. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. has sent over three million 155 mm shells and more than $67 billion in weapons and military aid.

By Far fewer Canadians — including Quebecers — are travelling to the United States this year than they did in 2024. Recently released Statistics Canada data shows a sharp decline in Canadians returning to the country from abroad, driven by a decline in travel from the United States. The decline in travel, which also includes fewer U.S. visitors entering Canada, tracks with the first months of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration. This second Trump presidency has seen a sharp deterioration in Canada-U.S. relations marked by aggressive tariffs on Canadian goods and threats of annexation. With it have come calls to boycott American goods — and American vacations. Depending on the metric, travel from the U.S. has declined year-over-year every month since either January or February. Trump took office Jan. 20. In June, 1.3 million Canadians returned home from the United States at land crossings, making for 33-per-cent fewer trips than in June 2024. June was the sixth consecutive month that fewer Canadians crossed the land border back into the country, compared with the same months in 2024. Quebecers cut back on U.S. travel even more. Just 164,000 Canadians crossed the U.S. border into Quebec in June, a 43-per-cent decrease from June 2024, when 286,000 people made the same trip. Americans are also opting to travel to Canada less: 1.4 million U.S. residents entered Canada in June 2025, a 10-per-cent decline from 2024 and the fifth consecutive month that U.S. travel to Canada declined. Airports are also less busy, with 3.4-per-cent fewer Canadians —1.2 million people — returning to the country by plane this June than in June 2024. The drop was driven by a decrease in return trips from the U.S.: 364,000 Canadian residents made that journey, a 22-per-cent decline from June last year. But arrivals from outside the U.S. increased, with 867,000 Canadians returning from countries outside the U.S. this June, 7.3 per cent more than in June 2024.
