Senior bank manager behind bars after multi-million drug bust
CAPE TOWN - A senior bank manager is facing charges of dealing in drugs and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
The 40-year-old, Raed Cupido made his second appearance at Cape Town's Magistrates Court this week.
Cupido was arrested on Tuesday last week during an intelligence driven operation conducted by members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence and Provincial Organised Crime Detectives.
Police pounced onto him at a Cape Town storage facility where he allegedly kept 15 bricks of cocaine of about 15 kilograms (1kg each) with an estimated street value of R18 million as well as one AK 47 rifle, an Uzzi, five 9mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition.
The suspect is expected to make another appearance at the end of June and eNCA will make an application to film the court proceedings on the day.

The South African Police Service's (Saps') Anti-Kidnapping Task Team has rescued a 30-year-old man and arrested two kidnappers during an operation east of Johannesburg. 'The rescued victim confirmed he had been kidnapped on Thursday, 26 June 2025. 'Just last week, police traced a Mozambican kidnapping kingpin to an apartment block in Fourways, Johannesburg. The suspect, linked to several kidnappings, was fatally wounded in a shootout with police,' Van Wyk said. Van Wyk said Saps remains resolute in its commitment to dismantling kidnapping syndicates and bringing perpetrators to justice. Kamogelo Baukudi On Friday, Saps made a major breakthrough and confirmed that the kidnapped 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi had been found alive. Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said they were relieved that Baukudi had been found. Crime Intelligence COO to remain in police custody after failure to disclose pending case against him
JOHANNESBURG - Crime Intelligence chief financial officer Philani Lushaba will remain in police custody following his failure to disclose that he has a pending case against him. Lushaba appeared alongside six crime intelligence senior officials, including the unit's head, Dumisani Khumalo, in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Friday. They were arrested on Thursday by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), facing charges of fraud and corruption. The matter relates to the appointment of Dineo Mokwele to the position of technical support system manager, a highly specialised division within Crime Intelligence responsible for national covert operations. IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame explained: 'Khumalo, Madondo, Lekalakala, Gabela, Ncube and Mokwele were granted R10,000 bail. They were ordered not to enter any premises of crime intelligence. 'Meanwhile, Lushaba will remain in custody as his matter is a schedule 6 criminal offence, owing to his pending case, and such did not reflect in his affidavit presented to the court for bail application… IDAC is ready to proceed with the trial.'

Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo and six colleagues appeared in the magistrate's court in Pretoria where they applied for bail. Dumisani Khumalo, the head of Police Crime Intelligence, along with six colleagues, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday to apply for bail concerning serious allegations related to unlawful senior appointments within the police force. On their first court appearance, all but one of the accused were granted bail set at R10,000 each. The arrested include five police officials who stood alongside Khumalo in the dock. They were arrested on Thursday, June 26, 2025. However, the group's Chief Financial Officer, Major General Philani Lushaba, remains in custody due to a pending case, where it was ruled that he could not be released on a technicality. Henry Mamothame, spokesperson for the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), provided further clarity on the proceedings, confirming that Lushaba's pending case did not reflect on the affidavit during bail application.
