Gavin Newsom swings through South Carolina, where Democrats will play pivotal 2028 nominating role

Yahoo3 days ago
BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday launched a two-day tour of South Carolina, calling on voters across rural areas — some tucked in GOP strongholds — to exercise their 'moral authority' in standing up to President Donald Trump and Republicans in next year's midterm elections.
But more than that, Newsom's foray into the state, which for years has held one of the earliest voting contests on the Democratic presidential primary calendar, serves as a strong signal that the governor of the most populous state is eyeing a 2028 White House bid.
Newsom spent Tuesday in small towns across northeastern South Carolina, speaking to crowds in coffee shops and small businesses, shaking hands or posing for photos with scores of them. In Florence, he focused his comments on what he said is the need to address the nation's divisions by being intentional in having conversations with people of diverse viewpoints.
'I think it's really important for Democrats that we spend time in parts of our states, parts of our country, that frankly, we haven't spent enough time in, and so that's why I'm here,' Newsom said.
In Mullins, Newsom arrived at another coffee shop nearly an hour late, a delay attributed to him stopping by an annual gathering of some 2,500 AME bishops. Newsom said the sermon left him 'spellbound.'
Later Tuesday afternoon in Bennettsville — where Democratic state Rep. Jason Luck said 'no one remembers' the last time even the state's own governor, let alone one from another state, visited — state Democratic Party Chair Christale Spain thanked Newsom for being 'generous with his cash.' It was a nod to a recent fundraising email sent by the governor that Newsom said had raised $160,000 for the South Carolina party.
At each stop, Newsom called on Democrats to show their strength in next year's midterm elections, a peg for potential national candidates to begin introducing themselves to voters in early primary states such as South Carolina. Increasing Democrats' numbers in Congress, he argued in Bennettsville, would diminish Donald Trump's power, allowing Democrats to 'leverage this country."
The investment of time in a state pivotal to picking his party's presidential nominees, and Newsom's trajectory across some of its reddest areas, suggest that the term-limited governor is angling to shed his image as a San Francisco liberal and get ahead of what is sure to be a crowded 2028 Democratic primary field. The visit also will help him make inroads with the diverse Democratic electorate whose buy-in has long been seen as critical for their party's nominee.
On Wednesday, Newsom turns toward the conservative Upstate, among the state's most GOP-rich areas. He will kick off with an event in the small town of Seneca, which four-term GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham calls home. In last year's general election, Trump won more than 75% of votes cast in surrounding Oconee County.
Treading in that territory fits with the image that Newsom has been cultivating for himself ahead of a possible White House bid.
Increasingly willing to break from some of the policies that have defined his brand and his deeply Democratic state, Newsom has hosted Trump's allies on his podcast, even stunning some members of his own party by agreeing with podcast guests on issues such as restricting transgender women and girls in sports. The state is embroiled in a fight with the Trump administration over whether transgender athletes can compete in girls' high school sports, with the U.S. Department of Education finding that the state violated Title IX, the federal law that bans sex discrimination in education.
Newsom also said dismantling police departments was 'lunacy," and he kept silent when another of his podcast guests, longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon, falsely said Trump won the 2020 presidential election against Democrat Joe Biden.
Although the 2028 Democratic primary calendar won't be set for many months, potential candidates for the party's upcoming presidential slate have already started visiting South Carolina, with the expectation that the state will continue to play a pivotal role.
At the urging of Biden — whose 2020 candidacy was saved by his resounding South Carolina primary win — the state led off Democrats' 2024 calendar, and the state party intends to make the argument that it should retain the No. 1 position in the next cycle. South Carolina has long been the first Southern state to hold a primary, giving it a unique role in the Democratic nomination process because of its diverse electorate, particularly the significant influence of Black voters.
In May, a pair of governors — Minnesota's Tim Walz and Maryland's Wes Moore — headlined a weekend of events hosted by South Carolina Democrats, introducing themselves and testing their possible candidacy arguments in front of the party faithful.
Both also addressed attendees at Rep. Jim Clyburn's World Famous Fish Fry, a storied night of cold drinks, hot fried fish and raucous political stumping in which scores of Democratic presidential hopefuls have participated through the years.

Senate Democrats join fired State Department employees to rally against layoffs

Senate Democrats on Friday joined State Department employees in protest of the Trump administration's decision to layoff 1,300 employees this week. 'This is not America first. This is America in retreat,' Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said on Friday at a protest outside the department's headquarters in Washington. 'And we don't want America retreating, do we?' 'Hell no,' the Maryland Democrat exclaimed. A number of workers gathered outside after the department sent reduction in force (RIF) notices Friday morning to about 1,100 civil servants and 250 foreign service officers stationed in the U.S., with plans to cut its workforce further. Workers were instructed to return their government-issued belongings on Friday. The move, which comes months after Secretary of State Marco Rubio led the department in shuttering the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has been broadly condemned by Democrats on Capitol Hill. 'There are active conflicts and humanitarian crises in Ukraine, Sudan, Gaza, Haiti and Myanmar—to name a few. Now is the time to strengthen our diplomatic hand, not weaken it,' Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, wrote in a statement backed by all Democrats on the committee. Van Hollen echoed these concerns on Friday, stating the layoffs make the American public 'less safe.' 'When we retreat, that helps our adversaries and it hurts our friends and allies. When we retreat, it helps the autocrats and the dictators,' he said. 'And it undermines those fighting for human rights and democracy around the world.' Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) also attended the Friday rally, describing the reduction in force as 'devastating' earlier in the day. Rubio has long maintained that efforts to reshuffle the Department are 'deliberate' and focused on boosting efficiency. 'It's not a consequence of trying to get rid of people. But if you close the bureau, you don't need those positions. Understand that some of these are positions that are being eliminated, not people,' Rubio told reporters while in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. But concerns have also been raised by the American Foreign Service Association, a union that represents tens of thousands of former and current diplomats. They argued the workforce reduction would 'damage our credibility abroad.' 'Diplomats are not faceless bureaucrats. They are America's forward presence, serving in war zones, evacuating citizens, negotiating for the release of detained Americans, and steadying allies in turbulent times. Like military personnel, they move every two to three years, serving wherever America needs representation, often in dangerous and difficult places,' the union wrote. 'Their mobility is a strategic asset. Firing them based solely on their current office location discards that asset and damages our credibility abroad,' the group added.

‘Assassination culture' makes ICE its new target — and Dems fan the flames

It should be this week's biggest story: Violent assailants are targeting on-the-job federal law enforcement officials with murderous intent. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is bearing the brunt of these assaults, with aggression against ICE agents up 700% compared to the same time last year. Blame the Democrats — as their unhinged rhetoric turbocharges the left's 'assassination culture.' Advertisement On Thursday, a rioter trying to stop an ICE raid on a marijuana farm in Camarillo, Calif., shot a gun at agents, while other protesters pelted federal vehicles with large rocks. Agents found 10 underage illegal immigrants working at the farm, which is now being investigated for child labor violations. Days earlier, on July 4, a masked and armed mob dressed in tactical gear attacked an ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas. Advertisement A local police officer was shot in the neck as assailants rioted and defaced officers' vehicles with graffiti reading 'traitor' and 'ICE pig.' On Monday, a gunman ambushed Border Patrol agents in McAllen, Texas. Two officers and a federal employee were injured, one shot in the knee, before the shooter was neutralized. These attacks are escalating in frequency and ferocity. Advertisement Earlier this year, Tesla dealerships were firebombed and shot at while conservative influencers, as well as their family members, were menaced by dangerous 'swatting' calls that sent armed officers to their homes. In April I described in these pages a survey in which frightening numbers of left-leaning Americans said that political violence — up to and including assassination — can be 'acceptable.' 'It certainly feels like a powder keg,' I wrote, 'as violence is excused and celebrated online as never before.' Now that keg is exploding in our streets. Advertisement We understand that people in public-facing roles are taking a risk when they do their jobs. It's why assaulting a bus driver, say, carries a heavier penalty than raging at a co-worker. But Democrats are doing nothing to calm their base's insane fury. Instead, they're openly demonizing ICE agents, often comparing them to the Gestapo in Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany. On Tuesday, CNN's Tiffany Cross shrieked that the feds are 'kidnapping people and transporting them to concentration camps.' How galling. The people Hitler rounded up were sent to death camps. Hardly the same as getting a free ticket back to your home country. Advertisement Keep up with today's most important news Stay up on the very latest with Evening Update. Thanks for signing up! Check out more newsletters Democrats like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are also whipping their followers into a frenzy over ICE agents who wear masks when conducting raids. 'Every single ICE agent who's engaged in this aggressive overreach and are trying to hide their identities from the American people will be unsuccessful,' Jeffries railed last month. 'Every single one of them, no matter what it takes, no matter how long it takes, will, of course, be identified.' Advertisement For what purpose if not to harm them? Meanwhile, the lefty media is lending an assist, portraying ICE as a uniquely dangerous agency out of step with the American public. Agents are 'miserable,' claimed the Atlantic's Nick Miroff, because they're 'vilified by broad swaths of the public.' 'The overreach we're seeing in terms of what ICE is doing now is not commensurate with what the American public wants,' declared liberal commentator Jessica Tarlov on Fox News, who insisted that voters don't want those who merely crossed into our country illegally to be deported. Advertisement False: Multiple recent polls find a majority of Americans in favor of deporting all illegal immigrants, not just those who committed further crimes after entering — from 55% (The New York Times) to 64% (Marquette). No, it's no great mystery what Americans want. Voters elected Donald Trump on the explicit promise that he would end the chaos Joe Biden allowed to reign on our border — and deport those who broke our laws and came here illegally. The disorder of the last few years left Americans exhausted. Advertisement They picked Trump to clean house. Democrats, and their media friends, are doing everything they can to stop him from doing it. Instead of giving their followers permission to turn their anger into violence, they need to help their base accept reality. Rage and fury at this level can easily spread out of control. Yet they're showing no signs of doing so. 'Our own base is telling us . . . there needs to be blood to grab the attention of the press and the public,' an unnamed Democratic House member told Axios this week. 'Some of them have suggested . . . what we really need to do is be willing to get shot' in anti-ICE protests. 'Civility isn't working,' another House Democrat said. This sadistic lust for violence must be put down, hard. Democrats need to find the bravery to tell their leftist flank: Enough. Nancy Mace Challenges Gavin Newsom To Debate So She Can 'Emasculate' Him

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) went after California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Friday afternoon after he shared a photo of her in a social media post griping about Fox News. But if she expected her comments to, as the kids say, 'win the internet,' she was sorely mistaken. Fox News ignited the feud with a story about how Graham Farrar, the co-founder of Glass House Farms, a California cannabis farm raided by federal immigration authorities, had previously donated $10,000 to Newsom. Newsom decided to respond to Fox's hand-wringing about Democrats, immigrants and cannabis with receipts — tweeting a photo of Farrar's co-founder, Kyle Kazan, posing with none other than the right-wing Mace. 'Sure is rich for Fox News and the Trump Admin to point to campaign donations to Democrats, when in fact, the CEO is a Trump supporter who donated to my recall and has given to more Republicans,' Newsom posted. A Los Angeles Times report about the raid noted that Kazan is an ex-cop and supporter of Donald Trump, something Newsom also noted. Sure is rich for Fox News and the Trump Admin to point to campaign donations to Democrats, when in fact, the CEO is a Trump supporter who donated to my recall and has given to more Republicans. — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) July 11, 2025 Mace, who has in fact supported cannabis legalization in the past, clearly wasn't pleased that the Democratic governor had called her out. So she responded to Newsom with her own post, which ignored the points of Newsom's tweet but contained some red meat for her base ― including mentions of George Soros and (checks notes) 'm*rderers, r*pists, and p*dophiles' she claimed were 'walking free' under Newsom's watch. Oh, and she challenged the governor to a debate so she could 'emasculate every one' of his positions. So you want to talk campaign donations, @GavinNewsom... Why did George Soros drop $1 million to save your skin in the recall? Also, why are m*rderers, r*pists, and p*dophiles walking free under your watch? Hate women and children a little or a lot?Let's settle this on a debate… — Nancy Mace (@NancyMace) July 11, 2025 Newsom hadn't responded to Mace's debate offer as of Friday afternoon. Neither Mace's nor Newsom's offices immediately responded to HuffPost's request for comment. However, Mace's tough talk didn't get a lot of support online, and it's partially due to Jeffrey Epstein, who died in jail while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking young women and girls. Earlier this week, Trump-appointed officials in the DOJ and FBI claimed that there is no evidence of an Epstein client list, nor evidence that the convicted sex offender and disgraced financier was murdered, dashing a couple of right-wing consipracy theories. Ever since then, disenchanted MAGA fans have become slightly less convinced that the GOP itself actually cares about stopping 'm*rderers, r*pists, and p*dophiles.' People on social media were quick to point out that Mace's claims about criminality running rampant under Democrats seemed hypocritical at best. Pedophiles are walking free under Trump's watch. Yikes — This You? (@Thiss_Youu) July 11, 2025 You shouldn't be talking. You've been completely silent on Epstein and his political, celebrity and scientist friends. — Meesh (@MeeshFL) July 11, 2025 I dont care about California, thats their problem. However a sitting US Representative pushing horse shit, when the shit stain in the white house is a convicted felon, adulterer, r*pist, and p*dophile, then blindly supporting him. Throw more stones at your glass house dumbass. — INFIDEL Fella 🇺🇦 (@ChYph3r) July 11, 2025 I dont care about california right nowI care about why you and your party are covering for Epstein. — Karthik Ramaswamy (@Kramaramb) July 11, 2025 FactSouth Carolina has the same rape/sexual offense rate as California: 36.4 per 100,000 residentsSouth Carolina has a higher per capita murder rate: 9.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, Cali is 4.9Statistically SC has more crime, California's just larger.🤷♀️ — Johnny Loveless 🤘🏈 🐶 🇺🇸 (@JohnnyLoveless) July 11, 2025
