Ohio State football linked to MAC coach for offensive coordinator position

Yahoo04-02-2025
Ohio State football is coming off one of the most impressive seasons in college football history and a national championship in its pocket, but it appears now that the pie is done baking, everyone wants a piece. We know that defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles is off to State College, Pennsylvania to call the Penn State defense. Shortly after that announcement, offensive line coach, Justin Frye, took off for the big lights of the NFL to the Arizona Cardinals. Perhaps the most alarming departure is offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly also taking an NFL gig with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Rumors are swirling in regard to who the next play caller for the Buckeyes will be, and although it appears current co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach, Brian Hartline, is the odds-on favorite, some outside candidates have emerged. One of the more interesting names mentioned has been Joe Moorhead, who is currently the head coach of the Akron Zips.
Moorhead has been the head man at Akron since 2022 and has had a pretty miserable tenure so far with many mentioning that his seat is likely hot heading into 2025. But there is no denying his pedigree as an offensive play caller and his tenure as offensive coordinator for the Oregon Ducks from 2020 through 2021 was electric.
Before arriving to Oregon, Moorhead also had a stint as head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs with average results that resulted in his firing. People are likely to focus on his head coaching gigs, but his resume as a coordinator with Oregon and Penn State, where he coached from 2016 through 2017 are hard to argue against.
His offensive genius helped Penn State earn a victory over OSU in 2016 and helped Oregon win against Ohio State in 2021. The former Fordham quarterback runs an effective and creative running scheme that would be a good fit in Columbus, so we'll continue to keep an eye on where this thing goes. There are still plenty of names being bantered about in the media, but sometimes these things go in a different direction.

Penn State takes top spot in USA TODAY Sports Big Ten power rankings

There is no denying that Penn State is preparing for one of the more anticipated seasons in program history after making a run to the College Football Playoff semifinal last season. The bar has been raised by many for the Nittany Lions, and the hype train continues to be roaring at full steam heading into the 2025 season. That hype continued to rise with the Nittany Lions landing on top of the Big Ten preseason power rankings from USA TODAY Sports college football writer Paul Myerberg. Yes, Penn State comes out ahead of the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes and the defending Big Ten champion Oregon Ducks, respectively. That has been the fairly common belief by those around the college football media circles this offseason in part due to a roster returning many key players on each side of the ball, despite losing first-round draft picks in Abdul Carter and Tyler Warren, and adding key transfers to help plug the void at the wide receiver position. The addition of Trebor Pena from Syracuse is considered a major upgrade for an offense that already added a pair of other talented wide receivers in the offseason. Penn State's rise to the top of the Big Ten power rankings is focused largely on the expectations for the offense. The return of Drew Allar at quarterback and both star running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen gives Penn State as solid a returning backfield as we may see this season in all of college football. Penn State's schedule is also moderately favorable, with the biggest challenge coming with a road trip to Ohio State and getting Oregon at home for a primetime whiteout game highlighting the home schedule. According to the power rankings from Myerberg, Penn State will face five of the Big Ten's top-10 teams this season. Three of those games will come at home (Oregon, Indiana, and Nebraska), and the other two will be on the road (at Ohio State and at Iowa). You can see the full Big Ten power rankings from Myerberg via USA TODAY Sports to see how the whole conference looks in 2025. Oregon's Mason Neville experiences major fall in MLB Draft

Oregon Ducks star Mason Neville was one of college baseball's brightest stars this season. The 6-foot-3, left-handed outfielder was No. 35 overall prospect after tying for the NCAA lead with 26 home runs. But after the first day of the MLB draft, which included three rounds and 105 selections, Neville is still available. Coming into Sunday's draft, the Oregon slugger was viewed as an advanced college bat, but one who crushed fastballs and struggled with some of the off-speed stuff he saw from college arms. Here's what has to say about him, in part, as a prospect: "Neville has long intrigued scouts with his overall athleticism and offensive potential from the left side of the plate, reminding some from his high school days of a young Cody Bellinger." "The raw power is very real, and a year after hitting 16 homers with a 33.5 percent strikeout rate, Neville has jumped up boards by greatly cutting down his swing-and-miss, allowing him to get to that pop even more consistently for the 26 homers that tied for the NCAA Division I home run title." "He can drive the ball gap-to-gap with plenty of pull power. He punishes fastballs and still struggles against softer stuff, but scouts are much more bullish overall that the bat will play at the next level." In total, the Ducks did not have a player drafted, but class of 2025 Oregon signee Taitn Gray was selected No. 92 overall by the Tampa Bay Rays. Day 2 should prove to be a much better day for the program, as Rounds 4-20 should see 5-6 Ducks hear their names called.
