Mandela Day sparks generosity across Germiston as groups give back
From food drives and soup kitchens to makeovers and care packages, the city came alive with generosity.
Local companies, big and small, rolled up their sleeves and partnered with community organisations to make a difference where it mattered most.

'Staff from various firms visited homes for the elderly, refurbished community centres, and donated essentials — including food parcels, clothing, and hygiene items — to vulnerable families.
The elderly residents at the Rest-a-While Centre received gifts, a warm meal and treats.
The Meadowdale Shopping Centre, WACO Africa, Yammin Hammond Attorneys, and the Wada Group visited the centre to donate groceries.
'We give every day, but Mandela Day allows us to highlight service and reminds us that giving is a shared gift,' said Trudy De Jesus Carreira, a Rest-a-While co-ordinator.
Primrose Police Station received a much-needed facelift. Volunteers from Better Primrose cleaned the premises, refreshed the palisade fencing with a coat of paint and tended the garden.
The Avril Elizabeth Home hosted its first Walk-A-Thon, combining fitness, fun and fundraising for a good cause. The event also marked the launch of the home's branded sports gear, now available for purchase to help raise awareness.
This was the home's first wheelchair-inclusive Walk-A-Thon, and families and friends enjoyed participating while supporting the cause.

Ward 36 Clr Wendy Morgan completed seven laps. She thanked everyone who donated and came to support the home.
The Thami Xala Foundation donated food parcels to over 60 people in the Rondebult area. They also served cooked meals and set up a preloved stall where those in need could choose items.

University of Mpumalanga uplift communities
In honour of Mandela Day, the University of Mpumalanga staff and students dedicated their 67 minutes to uplifting communities through meaningful outreaches. These staff members and students were from both the Mbombela and Siyabuswa campuses. According to the UMP spokesperson, Tlangelani Ubisi, the team from Mbombela campus visited the Sinqobile Youth Information Centre. They provided career guidance to out-of-school youth, donated sanitary towels, and planted fruit trees and food gardens. There the UMP staff and students donated knitted items, toiletries, seedlings and sanitary towels, while planting a food garden and fruit trees for over 57 vulnerable children who rely on the centre for daily meals. The last stop was at Sheba Village. The team visited the Sandla Semusa Multipurpose Centre which supports over 200 adults. Their donations included paint, clothing, hygiene products, sanitary pads and cleaning supplies, making a lasting impact on the community. Ubisi said that the Siyabuswa team went to the Sizanani Multipurpose Centre in Bronkhorstspruit.'The children enjoyed interactive activities including storytelling, reading, arts and crafts, outdoor play, and music and dance. The team also cleaned the facility and donated sanitary towels and dolls,' Ubisi said. At the Valschfontein Clinic in Siyabuswa, the team conducted a thorough clean-up and removed garbage to promote a healthier environment. Please support fund-raiser for Eldorado Homes
Eldorado Homes, which is a haven for disabled citizens, will be having a fund-raiser tomorrow (August 2) at Tuinhuis Nursery. The community is invited to come out in numbers and show their support. The fund-raiser, which starts at 08:30, will feature a variety of items for sale, including clothing and delicious snacks. Every rand raised will go directly towards supporting the home and its residents. According to Eldorado Homes manager Selvun Nair, 'We've had an amazing response from community members who have come together to put this event together, and we're hoping that the community will rally around us and help make it a success.' The school came alive with the cheerful sounds of play, music, and heartfelt connection, as they celebrated Mandela Day. For many of the visiting children, it was their first experience in a structured early learning environment, and it unfolded into a day of genuine joy, warmth, and shared humanity. The school's marketing and admissions officer Stephanie Mundell said: 'Today wasn't just about celebration, it was about connection. These are the moments where real learning happens, when children experience empathy, not as a lesson, but as an act.' The day was filled with hands-on, heart-led activities. The children painted side by side, swapped songs and giggles, shared stories, and formed bonds with new friends, all under the nurturing eyes of educators committed to creating inclusive and meaningful learning spaces. 'I am because we are', echoed Nelson Mandela's legacy in the laughter of children, who may come from different backgrounds, but are growing up with the same promise of hope. 'It reminds us that compassion doesn't need to be taught, it needs to be shown, shared, and lived.'
