Russia awaiting proposal from Ukrainian side on possible dates for meeting on peace talks

Moscow/Kyiv, July 8 (UNI) Russia is still waiting for proposals from the Ukrainian side on possible dates for a meeting to reach a peace settlement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today.
"As the president said last week, we are waiting for a Ukrainian proposal for possible dates. As soon as dates are agreed – and we hope that it will be done – we will make an announcement," Peskov noted, reports Russian state media TASS.
Peskov went on to state that no lasting resolution can be reached so long as European and American weapon supplies to Kyiv continue, calling them the biggest hindrance to promoting a peace proposal.
"It is obvious that, of course, these actions (delivery of weapons to Kyiv), rather, they probably do not lie in the mainstream of attempts to promote a peaceful settlement. That is, in this case, the line that the Europeans have chosen is absolutely aimed at promoting in every possible way the continuation of military actions
Earlier, the US had said that it will resume its weapons supplies to Ukraine after it had paused major arms and ammunition consignments to the country, with the Secretary of Defence attributing it to a domestic shortage, as well as focusing on the US troops stationed in the Middle East.
President Donald Trump had stated that Washington, post a strategic review of its supplies by the Pentagon, will continue providing Ukraine munitions in line with 'defensive capabilities".
Despite Trump's comments expressing his disappointment over President Vladmir Putin's refusal to stop, the two leaders have managed to share positive and constructive dialogue, with Putin also expressing his gratitude for Washington's attempts to promote dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian weapons supplies are currently running at a low, as the country has already lost much of its own indigenous weaponry, and is even running out of crucial defence components such as the MIM-104 Patriot interceptor missiles for the US Patriot missile defence system, which is Kyiv's bulwark against all aerial attacks by Moscow.
While the EU has said that it will continue supplying weapons to Ukraine, its own collective supplies are not enough to strengthen the country against Russia's massive weapons arsenal.
Furthermore, several European countries have refused to give Ukraine weapons and ammunition, stating that they won't drag themselves into a war with Moscow in any capacity, direct or indirect. This includes countries like Hungary, Austria, Ireland, and Serbia.
Other countries like Slovakia, and Bulgaria have provided supplies in a restrictive capacity while largely maintaining neutrality or more silent support for the Kremlin.

‘Illegitimate and shameful': Marco Rubio announces fresh sanctions on UN human rights official Francesca Albanese; says this ‘will protect our sovereignty'

Marco Rubio (AP) Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday announced new sanctions against a senior UN Human Rights Council official who criticized Israel's military actions in Gaza. Rubio accused the official of leading a 'campaign of political and economic warfare' against both the United States and Israel, as reported by Politico. Francesca Albanese, UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur, had called for the International Criminal Court (ICC) 'to investigate and prosecute corporate executives and/or corporate entities,'. Albanese alleged that war crimes had been committed by Israel during its war with Hamas. 'The United States will continue to take whatever actions we deem necessary to respond to lawfare and protect our sovereignty and that of our allies,' Rubio had responded in a statement. He said Albanese's efforts to push for criminal prosecutions by the ICC and other bodies are 'illegitimate and shameful.' Earlier this month, the US had called for the United Nations to remove Albanese on the grounds of 'virulent antisemitism and support for terrorism". 'An unacceptable campaign of political and economic warfare against the American and worldwide economy.' wrote Dorothy Shea, the active US representative to the UN, in the letter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lagos: refrigerators for sale - see the price and be surprised Refrigerators | Search Ads Search Now Undo In the report titled 'From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide,' Albanese named 48 corporate companies, ranging from arms manufacturers to financial firms, accused of profiting through their cooperation with the Israeli government. 'Israel's settler-colonial occupation has transformed into an insidious, bureaucratic and militarized regime of destruction — a calculated economy of genocide,' she wrote. Albanese, an Italian scholar, was appointed in 2022 and has urged for arms embargo and sanctions against Israel since its full-scale invasion of Gaza in October 2023. She had publicly remarked that 'the victims of the October 7 massacre were not murdered because of their Jewishness, but in response to Israeli oppression,' following which she was banned from Israel in February 2024. She had previously stated that Israel's offensive in Gaza is 'part of a long-term international, systematic state-organized forced displacement and replacement of Palestinians.'

Trump Announces 50% Tariff On Brazil Citing Bolsonaro Trial And Trade Disputes

Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, citing unfair trade practices and prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro. US President Donald Trump announced a steep 50% tariff on imports from Brazil, dramatically escalating trade tensions with South America's largest economy. The move, Donald Trump said, is in part retaliation for what he described as the 'unjust" prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as well as what he called a 'very unfair trade relationship" between the two nations. The new tariff represents a fivefold increase from the 10% rate the US imposed on Brazilian imports in April. In addition to the tariffs, Donald Trump confirmed the launch of a federal investigation into what he called 'unfair trade practices" by Brazil. In a letter addressed to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Donald Trump accused the country of 'continued attacks on the Digital Trade activities of American companies," a reference to recent regulatory actions and digital taxation proposals being considered in Brazil. 'The relationship is far from reciprocal," Donald Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, adding, 'We will no longer tolerate one-sided trade and political persecution of a great friend of the United States." Following this, the total number of countries targeted under Donald Trump's renewed tariff campaign has reached 22 as earlier Donald Trump unveiled a fresh round of tariffs on several more countries, escalating his push for what he describes as 'fair and reciprocal" trade terms for American goods. The latest measures impose 30% duties on imports from Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq and Libya, along with 25% tariffs on Brunei and Moldova and a 20% rate on the Philippines. The announcement follows closely on the heels of Donald Trump's earlier move notifying 14 other countries of impending trade penalties.
