The central government on Monday introduced new rules that allow service providers from Hong Kong and Macau to establish film production companies on the mainland, as part of efforts to deepen industry cooperation and boost film-making.
The regulation, issued by the China Film Administration, permits qualified investors to set up and operate production firms under China's existing foreign investment and business registration frameworks.
These companies will be allowed to produce a wide range of content; including feature films, animation, documentaries, and virtual reality productions.
Newly-established firms may act as lead producers and apply for project registration.
Existing Hong Kong- or Macau-invested enterprises may also apply to expand their operations to include film production, pending regulatory approval. (Xinhua)

Russia, Ukraine peace proposals contradictory: Putin

Russia, Ukraine peace proposals contradictory: Putin Russian President Vladimir Putin says Russian and Ukrainian negotiators are in constant contact. Photo: Reuters Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Russia and Ukraine's demands for peace were "absolutely contradictory", after two rounds of peace talks had failed to bring the sides closer to an elusive ceasefire. Russian and Ukrainian negotiators swapped memoranda outlining their visions for how to end the three-year conflict at peace talks in Istanbul this month. But other than large-scale prisoner exchanges, the talks have failed to result in any progress toward ending the fighting, triggered by Russia launching its military offensive in February 2022. "As for the memorandums, as expected, nothing surprising happened... these are two absolutely contradictory memorandums," Putin said at a press conference in Belarus. At talks, Russia has demanded Ukraine cede even more land and give up Western military support as a precondition to peace -- terms Kyiv says are unacceptable. Putin has repeatedly rejected calls for an immediate ceasefire and has escalated his aerial attacks as his army advances across the battlefield. He also said Russia was looking to cut its military expenditure from next year. "Next year and the year after, over the next three-year period, we are planning for this," Putin said. "6.3 percent of Russia's GDP goes on defence needs. That is 13.5 trillion rubles (US$172 billion). It's a lot," Putin said, acknowledging it had the potential to create headaches for the government budget. (AFP)

Dollar slides as Trump eyes new Fed boss

Dollar slides as Trump eyes new Fed boss The US dollar hit its lowest level since March 2022. File photo: Reuters The US dollar hit a three-year low on Thursday as US President Donald Trump eyed candidates to succeed Federal Reserve boss Jerome Powell, fueling bets of cuts to US interest rates. But Wall Street rose handsomely, lifting the S&P 500 to near a closing record, following solid earnings from chip company Micron and a signal that the White House could extend an upcoming tariff deadline on trading partners. Trump had suggested Wednesday that he was lining up Powell's replacement ahead of an expected departure next year. "No decisions are imminent, although the president has the right to change his mind," a White House official told AFP. The Dollar Index, which compares the greenback to a basket of major currencies, hit its lowest level since March 2022 at 96,997 points. The pound meanwhile reached its highest level against the dollar since October 2021. "Concerns over the Federal Reserve's independence and growing expectations for monetary easing weighed on the currency," said George Pavel, general manager at Middle East, a trading platform. "The move, if confirmed, would raise serious questions about the central bank's autonomy at a time of heightened policy uncertainty, painting a bearish scenario for the greenback," Pavel said. Since returning to the White House, Trump has constantly hit out at Powell for not cutting US interest rates and questioned his intelligence, stoking worries about the bank's independence. "I know within three or four people who I'm going to pick," Trump told reporters after a NATO summit. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump could announce a replacement as early as September, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, economic adviser Kevin Hassett and former Fed governor Kevin Warsh among the contenders. Earlier this week, Powell told lawmakers the bank would assess the impact of Trump's tariffs on the economy before making any rate move. (AFP)

US stocks rise, S&P 500 ends just shy of record

US stocks rise, S&P 500 ends just shy of record Markets are looking ahead to key US inflation data on Friday, expected to guide future Federal Reserve decisions. Photo: AFP Wall Street stocks rose on Thursday with tech equities leading, after the White House signalled US President Donald Trump could extend a July tariff deadline. The shift shows "unexpected flexibility from the US president," said FHN Financial's Chris Low, who also attributed some of the market's strength to some strong economic indicators. The S&P 500 gained 0.8 percent to 6,141, about three points shy of an all-time record. The Dow Jones climbed 0.9 percent to 43,386, while the Nasdaq jumped 1.0 percent to 20,167. The latest Trump indications on trade talks followed solid earnings from chip company Micron that helped add to the market's gains this week following the Iran-Israel ceasefire. While Micron itself finished lower, large tech names such as Google parent Alphabet, Netflix and artificial intelligence player Nvidia advanced. Data released on Thursday meanwhile showed the US economy decreased at an annual rate of 0.5 percent in the first quarter, a bigger fall than in the previous GDP estimate. But on the positive side, US durable goods orders for May topped estimates while labour market data was mixed. Markets are looking ahead to key US inflation data on Friday, expected to guide future Federal Reserve decisions. Among individual companies, McCormick & Company shot up 5.3 percent, with analysts pointing to a strong performance in its consumer business due to more dining at home. (AFP)
