Firefighters tackle blaze at house being built
Firefighters have tackled a fire at a house being built in the New Forest.
The fire broke out at the partially built home in Vereley, Burley, near Ringwood on Thursday at about 20:00 BST.
Firefighters from Burley, Ringwood and Fordingbridge worked together with crews from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to put the fire out shortly before midnight.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue said firefighters remained at the building to monitor and dampen down through the early hours. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Weather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago) 1889: Annexation caused Chicago to gain 131 acres and more than 220,000 residents, making it the second-largest city in the United States. With a new total of 1.1 million residents, it ranked just behind New York in population. Immigrants drove population growth in the Chicago area and Cook County last year, latest census figures showThe Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan area is the third-largest and Cook County is the second-largest in the country. 1996: Soldier Field sweltered as a crowd of 69,000 men sang and shouted during the Promise Keepers' first-ever event in Chicago. 2003: During a balcony porch party at an apartment building at 713 W. Wrightwood Ave. in Lincoln Park, a third-floor porch holding partygoers gave way, caving onto the second-floor porch below and barreling down to the ground floor. Thirteen people died and more than 50 were injured at the site just steps away from DePaul University. Although the city at first blamed overcrowding for the incident, it later charged that the porch on the Wrightwood building was bigger than code allowed and constructed improperly and without permits. Building inspectors, however, never cited those violations before the collapse. In the aftermath of the collapse, victims' families and injured survivors filed lawsuits against the property owner, manager, porch contractor and the city, the last of which a state appellate court ruled could not be held liable. The suits were ultimately settled with the property's insurance companies for a total of $16.6 million. The city also fined the property owner $108,000 and the porch contractor $25,000. It clarified and strengthened the building code and launched inspection sweeps. Officials created a 311 service request code for porch complaints and enacted a policy to inspect porches year-round rather than seasonally. 2006: Northwestern University coach Randy Walker died at 52 of a heart attack. He was at home in Wilmette at about 10 p.m. when he felt chest pains. He was rushed to Evanston Hospital but could not be revived. Pat Fitzgerald was named head coach on July 7, 2006. 4 people rescued from burning boat near Cape Canaveral: Coast Guard
Four people were rescued from a burning boat Saturday off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. A good Samaritan helped to rescue some of the unidentified passengers, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Black smoke was seen billowing into the air as beachgoers and other people watched from afar. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the blaze was still under investigation as of Saturday evening, the Coast Guard said.

What is Dorset's one signature dish according to readers?
Britain is a unique and wonderful place that has lots of food items tied to specific regions, and Dorset is no different. Across the realm of sweet and savoury, the county has a few things that fall into the category of items tied to the region. However, what do people who live in Dorset themselves consider to be the county's signature dish? We posed the question to Daily Echo readers on Facebook, and here is what you had to say. More than 100 comments were left on the Facebook post, and the same few items got a lot of mentions. One of those was Dorset apple cake, with one person saying: "Definitely Dorset apple cake!" Overall, it got 25 separate mentions, with another recommending it with Devon custard. The rustic dish combines chunks of apple, warm spices and is dusted with demerara sugar. Dorset apple cake was named as the county's 'national dish' back in 2006 (Image: Newsquest) Despite being crowned as Dorset's 'National Dish' back in 2006, the origins of the apple cake are hazy. The Dorset History Centre blog tried finding a recipe in its archives to no avail, but did find one mentioned in the Bridport News from November 27, 1896. It is likely that the origins go further back than that, and some may also question what makes the Dorset apple cake distinct from other West Country varieties, such as the Devonshire apple cake. The writer Philip Strange proposed that it probably wasn't, with it just having gained a "certain mystique". This was partly "through the appropriation of the cake as the county food and partly with the enhanced foodie profile of Dorset". While Dorset apple cake was the most popular answer, a few other food items got a few mentions. One of those was the Dorset Knob, which is a kind of hard, savoury biscuit. After that, extra butter and sugar were added and they were then hand rolled and left to dry in the dying heat of the oven. They are quite crumbly and dry, and can be paired with another famous Dorset food in Blue Vinny cheese. One reader combined all of these in their answer, saying: "Dorset knob with a blue vinny followed by either dorset apple cake or a portland pudding." Dorset Blue Vinny is made near Sturminster Newton (Image: Dorset Blue Vinny) Blue Vinny is a traditional blue cheese made near Sturminster Newton that has a hard and crumbly texture. According to the Dorset Blue Vinny website, the cheese was once made in nearly every farmhouse in Dorset until the Second World War, when production died out entirely. They added: "Historically, the farmers' wife made the cheese using left over milk after the cream had been skimmed off to make butter. His business is the only producer of the cheese to this day and was awarded a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status for it in 1998.
