Havili, Frizell among All Blacks in Australia-NZ XV to face Lions
DAVID HAVILI AND SHANNON Frizell are among four All Blacks named as part of an Australia-New Zealand XV to face the British and Irish Lions. The pair were joined by Shaun Stevenson and Folau Fakatava as the first wave of signings for the combined team that will take on Andy Farrell's men in Adelaide on 12 July. The combined side will be coached by Les Kiss, who will succeed Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach next year, alongside former All Blacks mentor Ian Foster. Advertisement 'We are delighted with the quality of the New Zealand contingent announced today and look forward to naming more players as the squad comes together,' said Rugby Australia's high performance director Peter Horne. 'We want this team to entertain the big Adelaide crowd and provide the Lions with a tough contest as they head into their three-Test series with the Wallabies.' Inside centre Havili has appeared 30 times for New Zealand, scoring nine tries, and is fresh from captaining Canterbury Crusaders to the Super Rugby title. Flanker Frizell has scored eight tries in his 33 Tests, while fullback Stevenson has been capped once and scrum-half Fakatava twice. The remainder of the Australia-New Zealand squad is still to be announced for the match, which will be the final Lions outing before the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane on 19 July. Wallabies release Taniela Tupou for Waratahs clash with Lions
Australia prop Taniela Tupou has been released from the Wallabies squad to join the New South Wales Waratahs for their tour match against the British & Irish Lions on Saturday, leaving his hopes of featuring in the test series up in the air. The move means Tupou will not be selected for Sunday's test in Newcastle against Fiji, the Wallabies' last warmup before they face the Lions in the series-opener in Brisbane on 19 July. Tupou, who has 58 tests under his belt, had an inconsistent season for the Waratahs in Super Rugby but Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt included him in his initial squad along with tighthead options Allan Alaalatoa, Tom Robertson and Zane Nonggorr. With the Wallabies' match-day squad against Fiji likely to be close to Schmidt's first-choice team for the Lions, Tupou may need to produce something special for the Waratahs to be considered for the series. Once a ball-carrying dynamo ranked among the world's top scrummagers, Tupou's stock has fallen in recent years amid poor form and injury struggles. His release from the squad raised question marks about his test future but Wallabies teammate Fraser McReight backed the man nicknamed "Tongan Thor" to return stronger. "He's coming together and he's honing what he needs to do but I have no doubt that he will come back and be firing, ready to go," McReight told reporters on Monday. "But obviously his first job is to put that light blue jersey on and go against the Lions for the 'Tahs." The Lions kicked off their tour of Australia on Saturday with a thumping 54-7 win over Western Force in Perth. They next face a Queensland Reds team featuring nine Wallabies, including centre Hunter Paisami and hooker Matt Faessler, at Lang Park in Brisbane on Wednesday. Former New Zealand prop Aidan Ross, the Reds' new signing, will also start against the Lions. Some of the Reds' best are being kept on ice for the Fiji test, though, including flanker McReight and halfbacks Tate McDermott and Tom Lynagh. Under Eddie Jones, Australia were stunned 22-15 by Fiji on the way to exiting at the group stage of the 2023 World Cup. While the Lions series-opener looms, McReight said the players were not treating Fiji as a warmup. "It's a test match against Fiji, who are a bloody good side," he said. "We're not worried so much about trying to get revenge (for the World Cup) or anything like that .... Two years ago was a long time, it's a completely different squad." Though focused on Fiji, the Wallabies players will be keeping close tabs on the Lions' tour matches, which include further fixtures against the ACT Brumbies and an invitational Australia-New Zealand XV. Reds and future Wallabies coach Les Kiss on Monday named the first four New Zealand players for the Australia-NZ squad to face the Lions on July 12 at Adelaide Oval. Former All Blacks enforcer Shannon Frizell is the headliner, with support from Canterbury Crusaders centre-captain David Havili, livewire fullback Shaun Stevenson and test scrumhalf Folau Fakatava.

LIV star that defied Rory McIlroy pockets €550k as Northern Irishman skips event
Tom McKibbin pocketed more than €550,000 after his stellar performance at LIV Dallas, as the young Northern Irish golfer continues to rake in the cash on the controversial Saudi-backed circuit. The 22-year-old shared fifth place with Charles Howell III, Harold Varner III and Tyrrell Hatton on Sunday, bagging the hefty sum and pushing his total LIV earnings over the €4.3 million mark. Despite initially being cautioned by Rory McIlroy against relinquishing his PGA Tour card for the rival tour, his January move to LIV has proven to be quite the lucrative leap for the Belfast-born star. McKibbin, who was reportedly tempted by a €4.6m offer to join the breakaway tour, made the jump to join big names like Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, with McIlroy expressing his reservations about his fellow countryman's career move. "If I were in his position, I wouldn't make that decision," declared the Masters champion when McKibbin bid farewell to the PGA Tour. While McKibbin was cashing in at Dallas, McIlroy decided to give the Rocket Classic in Detroit a miss, even though the winner stood to earn €1.4m. In the absence of the five-time major winner, it was the 20-year-old Aldrich Potgeiter who narrowly triumphed with a final round of 69, snagging his first PGA Tour title in just his 20th appearance. The young sensation not only bagged a sizeable cash prize but also etched his name into the history books by becoming the youngest South African to win on the PGA Tour. Additionally, he joined the elite group of non-American players under 21 to clinch a PGA Tour event, an exclusive list featuring golfing greats like Seve Ballesteros, Joaquin Niemann, Tom Kim and McIlroy. Potgeiter, reliving his victory, shared: "Today was a grind. It's not a fun thing to start with a lead, but it's always nice to win in a playoff. Going into the playoff, they picked some good holes that suited my game, but I'm just happy to get through that playoff. "I'd like to thank everyone in South Africa, for staying up so late, as well as my friends and family. You guys have been awesome!" With eyes turning towards The Open Championship next month at Royal Portrush, McKibbin reflected on the privilege of competing at such a major event in front of a home crowd. Having competed last year at Royal Troon, McKibbin is set to experience a first by playing The Open in Northern Ireland, expressing: "I've played here however many hundreds of times. "It's somewhere I've come up and played since I was 10 years old. To play a major championship on this golf course is going to be pretty special, the biggest event I'll ever have played in under that pressure and atmosphere." The last time the event took place at Royal Portrush was in 2019, when Shane Lowry claimed the Claret Jug. "It's something not many people get to say, that they've played an Open in their home country," added the LIV star. "To play it here on one of the best courses in the world, it's going to be pretty special. To be here and be playing will be something that I'll probably remember forever."
