Leaders urge journalists to report with social responsibility

Members of the Belagavi district electronic media association organised 'Media Day' celebrations in Belagavi on Sunday. Most of the speakers, who included leaders and officers, urged journalists to report on various issues with empathy and social responsibility. Rajya Sabha member Eeranna Kadadi said that the media needed to introspect on its rights and wrongs. 'The media needs to be responsible. Sometimes it creates heroes and villains overnight. This can damage people's reputation and deny credit to those who truly deserve it. Journalists should always be guided by justice and not emotions. Implications of a news story should be studied beforehand,' he said. He also spoke of the increasing influence of advertisers on media houses. Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar S. Guled urged journalists not to report in a hurry. 'There are always multiple angles to any story. Journalists need to study all of them and acquaint themselves with various possibilities. They need to tread cautiously, while reporting crime incidents,' he said. Police Commissioner Borase Gulabrao Bhushan urged media houses to create awareness about cybercrimes and financial scams being committed using hi-tech tools. He said that it was time to highlight local issues, bring out the good deeds by local leaders and activists and alert the public against potential dangers of using technological tools. Priyanka Jarkiholi, MP, urged journalism colleges and universities to update their curriculum to prepare young journalists of the future. 'Technology is advancing at such a fast pace that it is difficult to keep up with it. Journalism schools and media houses should train youngsters in using technology for the good of the society,' she said. 'The media plays an important role in shaping the dynamics of society. Of course, there are positive and negative dimensions to the impact of the media. Media tends to amplify some aspects and downplay some others. We need to realise that this can have lasting impact on the society,' she said. Asif Sait, MLA, said that owing to the increased role of social media in news reporting, leaders were forced to be alert about what they say. 'I have learnt this lesson the hard way. However, sometimes, relying on portals and social media can be dangerous at times,' he said. Guests presented awards to winners of sports events. A team of the district Forest Department won the Media Cup cricket tournament. Sunita Nimbargi, Assistant Conservator of Forests, donated the ₹1,11,111 cash prize for the construction of the Media Bhavan. As many as 14 senior journalists were felicitated.

Mizoram decides to collect biometrics, biographic data of Myanmar refugees

Synopsis Following the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, the Mizoram government will begin collecting biometric and biographic data of approximately 35,000 Myanmar refugees in all 11 districts, mirroring a similar exercise in Manipur. The initiative, funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to identify and document these "illegal migrants. AP The former Mizo National Front government in Mizoram was reluctant to collect the biometrics and biographic data of Myanmar refugees. Guwahati: The Mizoram government has decided to collect biometrics and biographic data of Myanmar refugees taking shelter in the northeastern state after a military coup in the neighboring country in February 2021. Earlier, Manipur had carried out this exercise. A Mizoram Home Department official, who did not want to be named, told ET, 'Towards the end of July, the work of collecting biometric and demographic data of around 35,000 Myanmar refugees would start. The biometric exercise would be conducted using the Foreigner Identification Portal and would be carried out in all 11 districts of the state." He added, 'Around Rs 38 lakh was earmarked for the exercise, and the expenditure would be borne by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Training of the government staff to conduct the exercise has almost been completed in all the districts." The MHA had earlier asked both the Manipur and Mizoram governments to capture biographic and biometric details of "illegal migrants" in the two states and complete the process at the earliest. Both northeastern states had earlier agreed to undertake the collection of biometrics and biographic data of Myanmar nationals. The former Mizo National Front government in Mizoram was reluctant to collect the biometrics and biographic data of Myanmar refugees. The incumbent Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, had earlier agreed to conduct the exercise. After a military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, refugees, including women and children from the neighboring country, started coming to Mizoram and Manipur seeking shelter in the two Indian states, and now their numbers in Mizoram have increased to around 35,000. According to Home Department officials, the maximum number of Myanmar refugees are currently taking shelter in Champhai district. Myanmar's Chin state shares mountainous borders with six Mizoram districts—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip. Recently, a fresh batch of refugees has started coming since July battles have erupted between the Chin National Defence Force and the Chinland Defence Force-Hualngoram over control of Chin state in Myanmar. A senior official, who does not want to be named, said that around 3,000 to 4,000 refugees had come since the fighting started on July 2.'They are being provided with food, water, and shelter.' Refugees are coming to Zokhawthar and Saikhumphai Village, bordering Myanmar in Champhai district.

Supreme Court issues notice to Jharkhand HC over long-pending verdict after 10 convicts file petition

New Delhi/Ranchi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Jharkhand High Court while hearing a petition filed by 10 convicts, including six on death row, who alleged inordinate delay in the pronouncement of judgment on their appeals. The petitioners had approached the Jharkhand High Court between 2018 and 2019, challenging their convictions by a lower court. Despite the completion of hearings in 2022-23, the High Court has yet to deliver its verdict, which prompted the convicts to move apex court. Out of the 10 petitioners, six were sentenced to death and the remaining four to life imprisonment. Nine of them are currently lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi, while one has recently been released on bail from Dumka jail. A bench comprising Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that the judge who reserved judgment in all these appeals is the same in each case, raising questions about the prolonged delay. Appearing for the petitioners, advocate Fauzia Shakil argued that withholding a verdict for years after hearings are concluded constitutes a violation of Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty, including the right to speedy justice. Shakil highlighted the mental anguish faced by the convicts due to the delay, especially those awaiting execution. She cited the Supreme Court's ruling in HPA International vs Bhagwandas, where the court expressed concern over the practice of reserving judgments indefinitely. The petition also referred to the Jharkhand High Court Rules (2001), which mandate that judgments must be delivered within six weeks of the conclusion of arguments. Further, citing previous Supreme Court rulings related to sentence suspension, the advocate pointed out that convicts who have already served eight years of actual sentence are, in most cases, eligible for bail.
