MLB trade deadline tracker: Padres add Mason Miller, Jays trade for Shane Bieber in final hours
The recent swaps are on top of several deals over the past few days — including the Mariners landing slugger Eugenio Suarez — but several big names could still be on the move, including Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller, Cleveland's Steven Kwan and Arizona pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.
MLB's trade deadline is at 6 p.m. EDT. on Thursday.
Padres add All-Star Mason Miller, lefty JP Sears from Athletics
The 26-year-old Miller is one of the game's top relievers and has a fastball that averages more than 101 mph. The 2024 All-Star has 20 saves in 23 opportunities, a 3.76 ERA and 59 strikeouts this season. He's under team control through 2029.
The Padres also added JP Sears, a lefty who has a 7-9 record and 4.95 ERA this season, striking out 95 batters over 22 starts.
San Diego sent the A's a package of prospects, including highly-regarded shortstop Leo De Vries and right-handed pitchers Henry Baez, Braden Nett and Eduarniel Nunez.
Shane Bieber off to Blue Jays, nearing MLB return
Bieber is headed to the AL East-leading Blue Jays in a deal with the rebuilding Cleveland Guardians, who also dealt right-hander Paul Sewald in the division to the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers.
Bieber, who is working his way back from April 2024 Tommy John surgery, has made five rehab starts. His most recent outing was Tuesday for Double-A Akron, in which he allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven in four innings. His next rehab start was scheduled for Sunday.
The Guardians are getting right-hander Khal Stephen from the Blue Jays.
Bieber had spent his entire career in Cleveland, including winning the AL Cy Young Award in 2020. He has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA and 958 strikeouts in 136 games, with 134 starts since his debut in 2018.
He agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026.
Tigers pry closer Kyle Finnegan from Nationals
AL Central-leading Detroit acquired Kyle Finnegan from Washington for two prospects, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade wasn't announced.
The 33-year-old Finnegan was an All-Star in 2024 but his velocity has been down this season. He has 20 saves with a 4.38 ERA in 2025.
The Nats received minor league pitchers Josh Randall and R.J. Sales, Detroit's third and 10th round draft picks from 2024, respectively.
Cubs add more pitching, trade for Andrew Kittredge from Orioles
The Cubs continued seek help on the mound, adding right-hander Andrew Kittredge from the Baltimore Orioles one day after agreeing to a deal with the Washington Nationals for righty Michael Soroka.
The 35-year-old Kittredge was an All-Star in 2021 and has a 3.44 ERA over nine seasons. The reliever has a 3.45 ERA in 31 games this season. He signed a $9 million, one-year deal with Baltimore last offseason that includes a $9 million club option for 2026 with a $1 million buyout.
Other deals, notes
— The Tampa Bay Rays acquired catcher Hunter Feduccia from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Paul Gervase, catcher Ben Rortvedt and left-handed pitcher Adam Serwinowski.
— The 35-year-old Sewald — who is headed to Detroit in a trade with Cleveland — is eligible to return from the injured list on Sunday after being shut down with a strained right shoulder. He is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 18 games this season, averaging more than one strikeout each inning.

Kyle Schwarber's 2-run shot, grand slam powers Phillies to 13-3 rout of Orioles
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered twice, including a grand slam in Philadelphia's eight-run sixth inning, and the Phillies pounded the Baltimore Orioles 13-3 win on Monday night. Schwarber finished with six RBIs, running his major league-leading total to 94 on the season. Schwarber's first homer of the game was a two-run shot deep into the second deck that tied it at 3 in the third. He heard 'MVP! MVP!' chants when he came to the plate in the sixth. Schwarber, the All-Star Game MVP, launched his NL-best 40th of the season into the right-center seats off Yaramil Hiraldo for a grand slam that sent the crowd of 41,099 into a frenzy. Harrison Bader homered for the first time since he was acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline, a tiebreaking three-run shot earlier in the sixth. The Phillies added closer Jhoan Duran and Bader in trades on consecutive days with Minnesota. With his 102.5 mph fastball and electric entrance, Duran was an instant fan favorite in Philly. Bader made his case with a homer off Corbin Martin. Bryce Harper hit a solo shot for the contending Phillies, his 17th. Edmundo Sosa and Weston Wilson hit back-to-back homers in the eighth for a 13-3 lead. Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo (10-5) allowed a two-run homer to Tyler O'Neill and a solo shot to Jordan Westburg over six innings. Key moment Orioles starter Cade Povich (2-6) was pulled after 5 2/3 innings. Martin failed to get out of the jam and allowed a single and Bader's decisive homer. Key stat Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Schwarber has reached 40 homers in three of his four seasons with the Phillies. He hit 38 last season. Whitecaps: Does pending Thomas Müller signing speak to club stability in Vancouver?
Thomas Müller could go anywhere he wanted in MLS. He's a big enough deal that the league would have figured out a way to make any landing spot happen for him. The fact that the Bayern Munich legend is on his way to the Vancouver Whitecaps — there continue to be reports that an official announcement is coming any day now and there have been no rebuttals to that from any of the parties involved — would seem to bode well for the stability of the Whitecaps in the Lower Mainland. Bayern Munich is the lone pro club that Müller, 35, has ever known. The midfielder has been there for 17 seasons and has played over 500 times for them. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. If you don't see it, please check your junk folder. The next issue of Sunrise will soon be in your inbox. Please try again Interested in more newsletters? Browse here. With that history, you get the feeling that Müller is the type who wouldn't want to be a part of something that might be messy. He and his camp would have certainly done their due diligence. And the fact that these marquee players help the gate throughout the league makes it imperative for the MLS to do its best to put him a good situation. The MLS needs more of these additions. The Whitecaps do, of course, remain up for sale. There were as well potshots back and forth between MLS commissioner Don Garber and officials from B.C. Place about the Whitecaps' lease agreement at the downtown dome, and the Whitecaps haven't backed away from wanting their own new stadium, with their sights set on Hastings Park. Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster has been adamant since it was announced that the team was looking to sell that the goal is to keep the team in Vancouver. Schuster's never wavered from that. Manuel Veth of Transfermarkt, who's been front and centre in coverage of Müller coming to the Whitecaps , told Global B.C. on the weekend that there were teams from all the globe interested in adding Müller. Veth said that Vancouver as a city, plus the success of the team this season and the connection Müller was able to create with Schuster — who's also German — were keys in Müller wanting to come to the Whitecaps. Had @ManuelVeth on @GlobalBC this morning to chat about the Thomas Müller situation. #VWFC Postmedia's Patrick Johnston suggests that Müller's Whitecaps' debut at home could be Aug. 17 , when Houston comes to town. For the remainder of the season, there are reports he'll make $687,000 US, and then $6.8 million US next season. The Whitecaps' lease for B.C. Place is up at end of this season. Garber's comments at the recent MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas — 'We have no plans to move the Vancouver Whitecaps. But right now they don't have a viable stadium situation and they need one,' Garber told reporters — feels like him trying to up the temperature on any negotiations in that regard and put public pressure on PavCo, the Crown corporation that runs the B.C. Place . Even if the Whitecaps can make a stadium work at Hastings Park, it's going to take time to build, and they're going to need a place to play until then. ' Vancouver Whitecaps FC can confirm that discussions with the City of Vancouver regarding potential stadium development at the PNE fairgrounds site are progressing, ' a recent team statement said. ' While the club is taking all necessary action to keep moving this process forward, it is a complex undertaking that can take considerable time. Our objective is to continue to move the project forward as quickly as possible, working with the city, the province, and MLS. ' The Whitecaps (13-5-6) are second in the Western Conference, one point behind San Diego FC (14-7-4) with a game in hand. We'll see what Müller brings when he eventually enters the lineup. We'll see, too, what he brings to the team in regards to a boost in attendance. The Whitecaps sit 20th in the 30-team league according to Transfermarkt, averaging 19,295 fans per game. This is the kind of move you make if you're trying to win a league title. Things certainly appear to be trending in the right direction for the Whitecaps. SEwen@

Napheesa Collier out for a few weeks with sprained right ankle
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Napheesa Collier will be sidelined for a few weeks after spraining her right ankle against the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday, the team announced Monday. Collier will be reevaluated in the coming weeks. The MVP frontrunner appeared to step on teammate Alanna Smith's left foot and immediately went down near Las Vegas' bench with the Lynx holding a 92-49 lead late in the third quarter. She attempted to stand but sat back down on the court, writhing in pain, and was immediately surrounded by Aces starters A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, NaLyssa Smith and Kierstan Bell, who all held towels to shield her from exposure. Collier's teammates, coaches and trainers eventually made their way to the opposite end of the court to tend to the 2025 All-Star MVP. The Lynx (24-5) have three games this week, including a WNBA Finals rematch in New York on Sunday against the Liberty. New York has its own injury issues with Breanna Stewart out for a few weeks with a bone bruise in her right knee. Minnesota has a 5 1/2 game lead on New York in the standings. ___ AP WNBA:
