Gyokeres' 'stubbornness' will make him a success at Arsenal

BBC News27-07-2025
Now that Viktor Gyokeres has officially signed for Arsenal, the question has moved on to whether he will be a success with the Gunners. His goal record speaks for itself at Sporting, with the forward scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances and providing 26 assists during his time in Portugal. Bjorn Hamberg, a former assistant coach to Graham Potter at Chelsea and Brighton, and recently a coach at Feyenoord, worked with Gyokeres when he was a young player coming through at the Seagulls. At the time, the plan for Gyokeres was to be the third or fourth choice striker and to be given minutes in cup games. However, Gyokeres did not want to only have that role and Hamberg says he "pushed to get out on loan because he just had a mindset of if he plays, he's going to do well"."What I like with him is that he's quite stubborn," he added."He's quite, like I said, his mindset is really good. He doesn't just sit down and wait for something to happen, he really wants grab it himself." Gyokeres went on loan to Swansea and scored just one goal in 12 appearances and Hamberg said that the Swedish striker just wanted to find a "different solution to go again". That solution was for Gyokeres to go on loan to Coventry City in January 2021.The 27-year-old scored three goals in the second half of the campaign, including his first league goal in English football, and made his move permanent that summer at the age of 23.During the next two seasons he would become one of the most prolific strikers in the Championship, netting 43 goals in 116 appearances."I would say that he is similar from then to now, hard-working, but a lot of power, a lot of runs behind," Hamberg continued."I always liked that directness towards goal, whether he was involved in the buildup or not, and it was probably less with us, but he used to come off from training and he would have scored a goal or two. "He always had that ability to find the back of the net."After helping Sporting to two league titles and scoring goals in the Champions League, Hamberg believes that Gyokeres' ability and his stature mean he is likely do well in the Premier League."What I like along with his ability in the Premier League, he has got the physicality for sure. He improves every year and normally stays fit," he added."He's just one of those players who is good around the box, good finisher, but he's also quite strong in transition and in big spaces."So he's quite versatile in that sense and I think that's a really big thing in the Premier League."

Rio Ferdinand fires warning to Eberechi Eze over Arsenal transfer this summer

Rio Ferdinand has warned Eberechi Eze he may struggle for game time if he joins Arsenal from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. Eze has been strongly linked to Arsenal ahead of the new Premier League season and the player is thought to be keen on a switch to north London. Arsenal are reluctant to pay Eze's £68m price tag – but believe they can negotiate a lower fee before the summer window closes on September 1. Eze has established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League, helping Palace land a historic FA Cup trophy last term. The 27-year-old has played a total of 167 games for Palace to date, registering 40 goals and 28 assists for the south London club. While agreeing personal terms with Arsenal is unlikely to be a significant issue, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand, who works as a football pundit, has told the Englishman to think twice about a transfer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: 'I don't think [Arsenal] need Eze. Why do [Arsenal] need Eze? Where is he going to play? 'You've got Martin Zubimendi as a holding midfielder, Declan Rice on the left-hand side of the No.8, Martin Odegaard on the right-hand side. 'Then you've got a winger – out of Noni Madueke or Gabriel Martinelli… He'd play where Declan Rice plays.' Analysis from Sports Editor James Goldman… It was almost impressive that after spending nearly £200m on new blood that the Gunners looked so distinctly recognisable in their 1-0 pre-season defeat to Tottenham. A lack of invention and reliance on Bukayo Saka, allied to the traditional Gabriel Martinelli off, Leandro Trossard on substitution had fans despairing. It's obvious why Arsenal supporters are crying out for Eberechi Eze. Quizzed if the move made sense for Arsenal, Ferdinand agreed, arguing that Eze's potential arrival would give the Gunners more depth. He also said that Eze could fit in the Arsenal XI if Rice was deployed as the defensive midfielder instead of new signing Martin Zubimendi. 'If Declan Rice played as a holding midfielder, I'd take Eze in a heartbeat,' Ferdinand added. More Trending 'Yeah, he would give [Arsenal] depth. You could move it about. If Declan Rice gets injured, who have you got? Max Dowman.' Arsenal feel Eze's best position is when he operates as a No.10 but also view him as a versatile attacking player who can be deployed on the left. It's also reported that Arsenal are looking to sell a forward before making a formal move for Eze. Meanwhile, it should be noted that Palace chairman Steve Parish has currently shown no indication he would be open to negotiating a lower price for Eze. Will Wright, 17, almost caps dream Liverpool debut with an Anfield goal - just after Reds beat Arsenal to sign the forward from Salford City

New Liverpool signing Will Wright came close to making an instant impression on fans just days after signing for the club. The Premier League champions had officially announced Wright's signing from League Two side Salford City earlier on Tuesday. The Reds had confirmed the forward had already linked up with their U21s squad last week and made his debut for the team on the weekend. Wright was given a 16-minute cameo in the second of Liverpool's pre-season double header against Athletic Club on Monday, with the teenager coming on for Florian Wirtz. The forward nearly marked his first Anfield appearance with a goal just 10 minutes later. Wright skipped past a challenge inside Liverpool's half, before feeding the ball to Federico Chiesa. After sprinting forward to offer Chiesa and option to his left, Wright received the Italian's pass and attempted to bend the ball into the net. The forward was ultimately denied by the Athletic Club goalkeeper's foot, with the ball rebounding to safety. Liverpool had beaten Premier League rivals to the signing of Wright, who made four senior appearances for Salford City last season. Arsenal had agreed a £200,000 fee with Salford two weeks ago with a further £50,000 to follow across the season in achievable add-ons. Talks had been progressing well with his representatives but Liverpool, who had led the initial race for the 17-year-old, came back in at the weekend and matched Arsenal's offer. Leeds United and Rangers also made late enquiries, as did Nottingham Forest, while City, though big admirers, have already committed sizeable funds to other youth signings. Wright ultimately agreed terms on a three-year contract with Liverpool. FA Cup defeat by Manchester City in January.
