Maryland State Police urge safety with Fourth of July travel underway
In Maryland, traffic headed toward the Eastern Shore and the beaches could be backed up. AAA says 1.3 million Marylanders will hit the roads, a 2% increase compared to 2024.
Higher travel volume, AAA says
AAA expects 72.2 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday week, from June 28 to July 6. More than 1.5 million of them are Marylanders.
This year's forecast is nearly 2% higher than at the holiday in 2024, and exceeds 2019 travel volume by nearly 9%.
"I actually even took the train to avoid driving," said Frank Zmuda, who traveled to Baltimore from New York to visit family.
Zmuda said the early arrival saved him from stressing out over traffic.
"It always gets so bad," Zmuda said. "Trying to get over the GW and down the turnpike, it's just a headache. Then, you get down here and it's just as bad."
Zmuda knows the route well and said he's traveling without worries this time around.
"People who are traveling today, tomorrow, God bless you," Zmuda said. "I wish you well because I can't imagine how it's going to be."
Maryland State Police are watching for impaired drivers
Due to the large volume on the road, Maryland State Police will increase their presence across all 23 barracks, keeping an eye out for drivers under the influence.
"Driving under the influence is not just illegal, it's reckless, selfish, and potentially fatal," said Lt. Col. Daniel Pickett.
Lt. Col. Pickett said that within the past five years Maryland, nearly 800 people have died in crashes involving impaired drivers.
Troopers, including Ashleigh Deems, have been involved in accidents with distracted or impaired drivers.
"Last month, a trooper from the College Park barracks was struck by an impaired driver while conducting a crash investigation," Trooper Deems said. "He is actually my classmate in Class 157 and luckily will be OK."
As State Police urge drivers to be responsible, AAA warns to reminds you to check your tires, car battery, and other issues before you drive off.
Summer gas prices
This summer comes with a gift at the pumps.
Dean said gas is down 30 cents in comparison to this time last year.
"Sitting at $3.20, down four cents in the past week. We are about 19 cents higher than we were a month ago," Dean said. "I actually looked back and these are the cheapest prices we're seeing at the pump going into this holiday since back in 2021."
Best times to travel
INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, expects Wednesday, July 2, and Sunday, July 6, to be the busiest days on the road. Afternoon hours will be the most congested.
"Generally, leaving in the morning is the best bet because that keeps you out of the backups in the late afternoon, early evening," Dean said.

American cruise ship passenger disappears after hiking at summer vacation destination
Alaska authorities are searching for a missing tourist after she failed to return to her cruise ship following a morning hike in the capital city earlier this week, officials said. Authorities received a report Tuesday afternoon regarding a 62-year-old woman from Kentucky who had not returned to the Norwegian Bliss before its departure time, according to the Juneau Police Department. The woman's relatives told police that she had left for a hike that morning and had plans to take a popular tourist tram partially up a mountain overlooking downtown Juneau before walking to Gastineau Peak and Gold Ridge, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Ground and aerial searches were conducted shortly after the woman's disappearance on Tuesday, with ground searches resuming Wednesday, according to the department. Due to rainy weather and poor visibility, aircraft searches did not return to the area the following day. The local peaks are still experiencing areas of snow in July. The popular cruise ship destination's tram service is attractive to tourists due to its proximity to the downtown area. The Juneau Police Department and Norwegian Cruise Lines did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. Authorities have not released the identity of the missing passenger.

Faena Hotel Miami Beach The Miami Beach hotel looks like the setting of a Baz Luhrmann movie, given its rich colors and more-is-more sensibility. That's because the Elvis and Moulin Rouge! director and his wife, Catherine Martin, an Academy Award-winning costume designer, helped Faena bring his visual ambitions to life — a maximalist masterpiece that might make Jay Gatsby blush. The drama begins in the 'Cathedral' entryway, where gold leafing coats the ceiling and massive pillars like divine armor. Lining the walls is Buenos Aires artist Juan Gatti's The Way to Futopia , eight large-scale, site-specific murals. Gatti, who designed the graphic art for Pedro Almodóvar's films, depicts the Faena mystique through religious and tropical imagery that explores themes of love, war, knowledge, passion and nature. Come an hour before your service to start your pampering in the white-marble-filled wet spa, whose facilities include a waterfall shower, a eucalyptus steam room, a sauna, an ice chamber, a tepidarium with heated stone loungers and one of the largest hammams on the East Coast. And nosh on tropical bites like star fruit and rambutan while sipping peppermint tea. The 22,000-square-foot space incorporates shamanic therapies (like the one featuring pranic healing, palo santo incense and sound bowls) and modern services (Biologique Recherche's Triple-Lift Advanced Facial). We opted for the Ábrete Corazon Cacao Relaxing Massage, a soothing 60-minute session that uses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich cacao to banish stress. Find more oases outside, where an art deco-inspired geometric pool is lined with red chaise lounges and palm trees. Or opt for the 100,000-square-foot strip of sand fronting the hotel. Sit under the red-and-white-striped umbrellas, and beach butlers will cater to your every need. Everyone from Madonna to Mrs. Maisel has performed at Faena. Faena Hotel Miami Beach Theater The luxury hotel anchors the Faena District, a city-designated six-block area along Collins Avenue that includes Faena Bazaar, a luxury shopping mall, and Faena Forum, a 43,000-square-foot, circular events space, both designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Rem Koolhaas. One entertainment venue is inside Faena Miami Beach: an intimate 150-seat theater bathed in crimson. It's the only Miami hotel with a working theater. Open year-round, the stage has hosted the likes of Madonna, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys and Bon Jovi. The Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel also shot scenes there. However, the theater also stages original productions. Its latest is a reimagining of Carmen that mixes flamenco, cabaret, fire arts, cirque nouveau, live music and the stylings of Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Bita from Andalucía, Spain. It's therapy wrapped in silk. A new viral trend is catching wind on the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps. Tanya Baird, a Northeast Philly native with a background in the fashion industry, is turning a viral flying dress photo shoot trend into a local movement of self-love, celebration and confidence. Baird's business is called Tanya's Traveling Flying Dress. She uses high-fashion gowns and iconic Philadelphia landmarks for her photo shoots, which help her clients reconnect with their confidence. Ricky Codio Photography Tanya's Traveling Flying Dress experience isn't just about the perfect Instagram shot. It's about helping women reconnect with their power and feel beautiful in their own skin. "This is not a typical photo shoot," Baird said. "This is a photo shoot that embraces freedom." Inspired by the flowing gowns featured in Santorini's famous photo shoots, Baird launched her business while on a soul-searching trip in Mexico. She wanted to bring that feeling of freedom home to Philly, along with the belief that beauty and empowerment should be accessible to every woman, at every stage of life. "It makes that woman take her power back and realize that what you're experiencing right now is being created within you," Baird said.
