Jofra Archer up for England Test call-up after ending four-year wait for first-class wicket - as Sussex fast bowler strikes against Durham

Daily Mail23-06-2025
Jofra Archer put himself on the path for a Test call-up after taking his first wicket for four years in first-class cricket.
The fast bowler looked sharp against Durham in what was effectively a trial for an England Test recall next month.
He finished day two of Sussex's County Championship game at the Riverside with figures of 1-28 from 14 overs and was their most dangerous bowler on a docile pitch.
Asked if he feels ready to step up to England, he said: 'I guess so. I just want to get through the game. I'm glad I've finished a day of four-day cricket. The last time I played I made it to tea. I'm glad to go all the way today.
'I guess I looked fine today. You'd have to tell me but I felt fine.
'I guess I'm faced with a different challenge now I know my body can hold up to it - the mental part of the game. So I think over the next couple of days I'm going to have a battle with it but it's all good. I'll keep trucking along.
'When the scoreboard got to 50 overs I was like: "Jesus, it's time to come off now" but we got to the end of day and it wasn't that bad.'
Archer struck with the second ball of his eighth over, angling a delivery in from around the wicket to trap Emilio Gay LBW.
As umpire Tom Lungley raised his finger, Archer's elation was clear for all to see as he celebrated with wicketkeeper John Simpson and the Sussex fielders.
It had been a long time between dinners. His last first-class wicket was that of Jordan Cox for Sussex against Kent at Hove on May 16, 2021.
He was tidy without being particularly threatening in his opening spell but his second stint in the afternoon - an extended six-over run which brought a return of 1-8 - saw him step it up.
He returned after tea for a slightly slower four-over burst before being put out to grass for the rest of the day.
England will have been happy with his workload. While it was good to see him bowling in three sessions, Archer is England's Ming vase and they do not want him broken again.
He will look to back it up on Tuesday as Durham resume at 249-5, 112 runs adrift in their first innings.

England vs Italy: How to watch Euro 2025 semi-final on TV & live stream tonight

England are just two wins away from defending their European Championship crown, starting with the Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy tonight. The Lionesses looked down and out after a calamitous first-half in their quarter-final against Sweden last week, going into the break 2-0 down. A quick-fire double from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang rescued the game before goalkeeper Hannah Hampton's heroics helped them win the penalty shootout. They now take on Italy in the last-four for a place in Sunday's final, with Sarina Wiegman facing several tactical and selection issues ahead of the match. Build-up to the match has also been marred by the online racist abuse aimed at defender Jess Carter, with the Lionesses announcing they will no longer take the knee ahead of kick-off. Here's everything you need to know about the Euro 2025 semi-final between England and Italy, including kick-off time, how to watch, team news and odds. England will play Italy for a place in the Euro 2025 final tonight at 8pm UK time. The semi-final is taking place at the Stade de Geneve in Geneva, Switzerland. The semi-final will be broadcast live on ITV1 and streamed live on ITVX, with coverage beginning at 7pm. You can discover the full list of presenters, pundits and commentators working at Euro 2025 here. All 23 England players were in training on Monday, including captain Leah Williamson who was forced off with injury during the win over Sweden. The Arsenal defender rolled her right ankle during extra-time, initially leaving Wiegman sweating over her skipper's fitness, but the manager says 'everyone is fit'. 'She really wants to play, she did everything to recover as good as possible, and she has,' Wiegman said in her pre-match press conference. 'She trained today, if she recovers well she can play tomorrow.' As for Carter, the manager said they have 'had a conversation' regarding whether she should play given the events of the last few days. 'It's a hard situation but Jess is a very strong person, she wants to move on too, but she and we felt we had to address this, we can't let it go. So we did. 'We want to perform in the match, she's ready to perform and compete. That says a lot about her and the team.' Italy have no reported injury or suspension concerns for the semi-final. England's defence will need to be wary of their star striker Cristiana Girelli who has three goals this tournament, including a brace in the quarter-final win over Norway. In the other semi-final match, tournament favourites Spain will take on Germany on Wednesday, July 23, with kick-off at 8pm UK time. More Trending Spain beat hosts Switzerland 2-0 in the quarter-finals and are widely tipped to advance to the final, potentially setting up a rematch of the 2023 World Cup showdown where they beat the Lionesses. Germany were down to 10 players for nearly all their quarter-final against France but managed to draw 1-1 before winning the penalty shootout. Spain – 1/2 England – 11/4 Germany – 7/1 Italy – 18/1 Odds courtesy of Betfair Spain have never reached a Euros final, whereas Germany are by far the competition's most successful team with eight titles, though they famously lost to England at Wembley in the final three years ago. The Euro 2025 final will kick-off at 5pm on Sunday, July 27. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
