No. 17 pick Joan Beringer inks rookie-scale contract with Timberwolves

French center Joan Beringer, the 17th pick in the 2025 NBA draft, signed his rookie-scale contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, the team announced. Beringer helped Cedevita Olimpija win the Slovenian Basketball Cup last season, averaging 5.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks on 64.4% shooting from the field. He scored in double figures 11 times, including a season-high 14 points and 10 rebounds on May 27. Advertisement He will make $4,201,080 next season, according to Spotrac. The 6-foot-11 standout was highly touted entering the draft because of his versatility, athleticism and rim protection. He ranked second in the Adriatic League in blocked shots, thanks to his timing, instincts and 7-foot, 4 1/2-inch wingspan. Before signing with Cedevita Olimpija, Beringer played for the Strasbourg Saint Joseph-Basket U17 team and the U18 and U21 teams for SIG Strasbourg. He is the first player from France to be drafted by the Timberwolves and the third overall selected with the 17th pick. The 18-year-old has also represented France internationally at the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket. He averaged 9.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and one assist on 70.5% shooting from the field in seven games, helping France to a fifth-place finish in Finland. USA's Emma Navarro falls to 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the round of 16 at Wimbledon

No. 7 Mirra Andreeva has advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals with a win over USA's No. 10 Emma Navarro. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung) Emma Navarro's Wimbledon journey ended in the Round of 16 on Monday after losing to Mirra Andreeva in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. USA's Navarro entered the match as the No. 10-seeded player on the women's side, while her Russian counterpart was seeded No. 7. Andreeva, on both sets, built an early lead which she retained as Navarro failed to cut down the deficit before getting swept. Advertisement After the match-winning point, Andreeva did not realize she had won, leaving a viral moment for fans to appreciate her focus. Navarro walked toward the net for a handshake when Andreeva lined up to start the next game. Upon looking up, the teenager realized the match was over and jogged toward her competitor. At 18, Andreeva is making her first Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance in her third year of participating in the tournament. After her win, the teenager raved about playing in front of tennis legend Roger Federer, who was in attendance in the Royal Box. "I was super nervous before playing for the first time on the center court," Andreeva said. "I really tried my best to not look over there in the box because I knew that as soon as I would look there, I would just completely lose my focus. Advertisement "When I saw [Federer], I got really, really nervous, but I'm just super happy that I managed to keep playing focused." Navarro scored wins over Petra Kvitová, Veronika Kudermetova and Barbora Krejčíková before losing in the round of 16. Andreeva defeated Mayar Sherrif, Lucia Bronzetti and Hailey Baptiste before defeating Navarro. Andreeva will face Switzerland's Belinda Bencic on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. This marks the first time that Bencic, ranked the world's No. 34 in women's singles, has advanced past the round of 16 at Wimbledon. With Navarro's loss, No. 13 Amanda Anisimova remains the top-ranked US player remaining, as No. 2 Coco Gauff made a surprising first-round exit, falling to unranked Dayana Yastremska in straight sets.

Michigan football makes big climb in ESPN 2026 recruiting rankings with elite commitments

Michigan recruiting is continuing to surge, and ESPN is taking notice. The last time that ESPN updated its 2026 college football recruiting rankings, Michigan football had just made its debut, coming in at No. 17 overall. After a torrid month of June, the Wolverines are moving up even more. Last week, ESPN updated its rankings, and though it doesn't include the commitment of wide receiver Travis Johnson or cornerback Dorian Barney -- or the flip of cornerback Brody Jennings to Miami -- the Wolverines have moved up 10 spots and are now just outside of the top five at No. 7 overall. The Wolverines signed the No. 1 QB for the 2025 cycle in Bryce Underwood and he carries high expectations, but they continue to add talent to the position and landed ESPN 300 signal-caller Brady Smigiel. The onetime Florida State commit is not only an accurate passer, but he also plays with the confidence and swagger that will be needed battling with five-star Underwood. After losing two DLs in the first round of the NFL draft, Michigan added several DLs to this class, including ESPN 300 DEs Titan Davis and McHale Blade. Four-star DE Tariq Boney is a player to keep an eye on. He lacks ideal length but can be a well-rounded technician and a quick contributor. In addition to pulling Boney out of the nation's capital, Michigan also landed Carter Meadows, a rangy edge defender who can bend well. As noted, at No. 44 overall, Smigiel continues to be the highest-rated commitment for the Wolverines in this class, according to ESPN. Wide receiver target Calvin Russell, who committed to Syracuse in a surprise pledge on Saturday, would have been the top offensive player at No. 28. Meadows, the highest-rated defensive commitment, is No. 88 according to ESPN's rankings. Here is where each of the current commits ranks in the ESPN300: With 10 included in the ranking and 12 overall now, the Wolverines are in a good spot to continue moving up. Of the remaining top targets in the 2026 class, Mineral (Va.) Louisa County running back Savion Hiter is No. 24, Ogden (Utah) Fremont athlete Salesi Moa is No. 35, Suwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill defensive tackle Deuce Geralds is No. 40, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy linebacker DQ Forkpa is No. 41, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian cornerback Davon Benjamin is No. 63, and Marietta (Ga.) Kell linebacker Brayden Rouse is No. 153.
