Caitlin Clark is returning to Iowa — this time to play an exhibition game with the Indiana Fever.
The Fever will take on the Brazilian National Team at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on May 4 as part of its preseason schedule, the WNBA team announced Thursday.

The game will pit Fever forward Damiris Dantas, a native of Brazil, against her former squad after she played with the Brazilian National Team in the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.
'We couldn't be more excited to play at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and we know Iowa fans will deliver an unforgettable homecoming for Caitlin,' Kelly Krauskopf, the Fever's president of basketball operations, said in a statement. 'Countless Hawkeye fans have become Fever fans, and we consider them family. That's what will make this preseason matchup so special for us.'

Clark achieved historic levels of success over her four seasons at Iowa. She scored 3,951 points — the most ever in NCAA men's or women's Division I history. She also broke the record for 3-pointers in a single season, made two national championship appearances and was named the National Player of the Year twice.
Those are just some of her accolades from a career so prolific that Iowa is retiring her No. 22 jersey at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this Sunday after its game against No. 4 USC.

In 2024, the Las Vegas Aces took on the Puerto Rico National Team at South Carolina, the alma mater of Aces superstar A'ja Wilson. Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley said then, after more than 13,500 people attended the exhibition game, that these types of contests should happen more often, and the Fever are following in those footsteps by bringing a preseason game to Clark's old stomping grounds.
The WNBA has ventured beyond the league's cities in recent seasons, hosting two preseason games in Canada and regular-season games in Boston. Minnesota and Chicago met in Toronto in 2023 (before the announcement of the Tempo as an expansion team); Los Angeles and Seattle faced off in Edmonton in 2024; and the Connecticut Sun had a regular-season game against the Sparks in Boston last season, with another Boston game against Indiana on the docket this year.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said during the 2024 WNBA All-Star Weekend that she admired what the NBA has with its global games platform and would like to expand the WNBA's imprint internationally. She also suggested the league would continue to grow its footprint domestically.
'Do you do neutral sites in the U.S. to test out expansion markets?' Engelbert said. 'That's another option to do either preseason games or regular-season games.' — Sabreena Merchant, WNBA staff writer
Clark's return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a preseason game will generate plenty of buzz at a location that has become the epicenter of women's basketball. The Hawkeyes have sold all women's basketball tickets for the last two seasons, including Clark's final campaign in 2023-24.
Iowa has experience hosting NBA preseason games, notably Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls in 1990. That appearance came a season after the Bulls selected former Iowa standout B.J. Armstrong in the first round.
The Fever's preseason game has the potential to garner more local interest, in a similar fashion to the Crossover at Kinnick exhibition featuring Clark's Hawkeyes against DePaul on Oct. 15, 2023. That event drew 55,646 spectators, the most for a game in women's basketball history. — Scott Dochterman, Iowa beat writer

ESPN star slams WNBA players' treatment of Caitlin Clark amid All-Star ranking controversy

ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale came to the defense of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark after her WNBA peers voted her as the ninth-best All-Star guard. Clark's ranking was a shock to many across the social media landscape. She was named one of the captains for the All-Star Game and received more than 1.2 million fan votes. The WNBA determined All-Star starters based on fan rank, media rank and player rank. The total weighted score helped determine the starters. The second-year guard was ranked ninth among her fellow All-Stars, "It is ABSURD the way that a # of players in the @WNBA have treated @CaitlinClark22! So sad but I bet they love the CHARTER FLIGHTS -the increase in SALARIES - the CROWDS -the TV Ratings since she arrived from @IowaWBB. No doubt she is THE BEST - thing to happen to the WNBA," he wrote on X. He was far from the only one who voiced his opinion on the issue. One potential reason why Clark's peers ranked her so low among guards is due to playing only nine of the Fever's 16 games this season. Clark has been dealing with injuries in her sophomore season, which continues now as she's missed the last two games. Clark had been struggling lately as well, going just 13-of-47 from three-point territory in her last three games. Still, Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, five rebounds and 1.6 steals over 33.3 minutes per game this season. Only the Phoenix Mercury's Alyssa Thomas – who could be among the 12 All-Star Game reserves, which will be selected by the league's head coaches and announced this Sunday – has more assists per game (9.3), and she's touched the hardwood in 12 contests this season. While Clark has been integral in the rise of the WNBA's popularity since breaking rookie and league records last season with the Fever, there have been many contentious moments with opponents. All the incidents became the talk of the sports world for a few days. But Clark and Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier will be the ones drafting players to their All-Star squads, and now they know who will be starting with them at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Clark's Fever home, on July 19. New York Liberty return home struggling after disappointing road trip

NEW YORK — The New York Liberty return home after a disappointing road trip that saw them drop three of their four games. Help is on the way, though, as Leonie Fiebich will return from playing in the EuroBasket tournament for Germany. That will give New York back one of its two missing starters. Jonquel Jones still is recovering from a sprained ankle and is out for a few more weeks. The team really has missed the two starters as its defense has struggled lately, giving up at least 89 points in three of the four road contests — including all three defeats. The schedule also gets kinder to the Liberty with an eight-game homestand for most of July. With the All-Star break thrown in, New York doesn't leave Barclays Center until a game at Dallas on July 28. The Liberty will welcome Caitlin Clark and the Fever twice over that span as well as rival Las Vegas. Hey now, you're an All-Star The WNBA All-Star starters were announced led by captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier. The pair will draft their teams after the reserves are revealed. Both are first-time captains. Clark, by virtue of receiving the most fan votes, will have the first pick in the draft. Other starters included Nneka Ogwumike, A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Aliyah Boston and Satou Sabally in the front court. Sabrina Ionescu, Allisha Gray and rookie Paige Bueckers got the nod in the backcourt. Power poll rankings Minnesota still is the No. 1 team with Phoenix and Atlanta behind the Lynx. New York, Golden State and Las Vegas were next. Seattle dropped three spots to seventh. Indiana and Washington followed the Storm. Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and Connecticut rounded out the poll. Expanded footprint The WNBA announced three new teams will be joining the league with Cleveland set to begin play in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030. That will give the league 18 teams — the most it's ever had since it first started play in 1997. Player of the week Angel Reese of Chicago averaged 19.7 points, 17 rebounds and five assists to help the Sky win two of their three games last week. Other players receiving votes were Napheesa Collier of Minnesota, Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana and A'ja Wilson of Las Vegas. Game of the week Seattle at New York. The Storm play a three-game East Coast trip stopping in Atlanta, New York and Connecticut. They dropped two of their last three games and will try and get back on the winning track.

Chicago to retire Candace Parker's jersey number

Former Tennessee women's basketball player Candace Parker will become the second player to have her jersey retired by two WNBA franchises. She will join Lindsay Whalen who had her jersey retired by Connecticut and Minnesota. Chicago is slated to retire Parker's No. 3 jersey on Aug. 25 during the Sky's game against Las Vegas. Los Angeles retired Parker's No. 3 jersey at halftime of its, 92-85, loss to Chicago on Sunday at Arena in Los Angeles, California. She also played for the Sky and Aces, leading all three organizations to WNBA championships. Parker played in the WNBA from 2008-23. She was selected No. 1 overall in the 2008 WNBA draft by Los Angeles. Parker was a 2008 WNBA Rookie of the Year, seven-time WNBA All-Star, league MVP during her rookie season and named WNBA MVP in 2013. Parker was a seven-time First-Team All-WNBA player and WNBA Finals MVP in 2016. The two-time Olympic gold medalist played at Tennessee from 2006-08 under head coach Pat Summitt.
