JoJo Siwa shares poignant 'self-reflection' post as she addresses her sexuality

Daily Mirror02-06-2025
Celebrity Big Brother star JoJo Siwa has used the start of Pride Month to share a personal reflection on identity, love, and self-acceptance
JoJo Siwa opened Pride Month 2025 with a heartfelt post to her followers, offering a message of love and self-acceptance amid her new romance with Chris Hughes. 'Happy day 1 of the happiest month,' the 22-year-old wrote on Instagram Stories.
'What I have learned over the last 22 years is that pride is all about love, acceptance and celebration. No matter who you are or what you are, you are you, you are beautiful, and you are perfect. Everyone's story is different and everyone's journey is different.'

Calling love 'just love,' Siwa praised its simplicity and added: 'Happy pride to the beautiful LGBTQIA+ community, to the allies, and to all that exist :).' Earlier this year, the former child star made headlines when she began dating Celebrity Big Brother UK co-star Chris, 32.

During the show's 24th season, she shared a personal revelation: 'I've always told myself I'm a lesbian, but I think being here, I've realised: 'Oh no, I'm not a lesbian, I'm queer.' I think that's really cool. I'm switching letters.'
She later told Us Weekly she hadn't expected that moment to air: 'That was one of those conversations actually that I was having that I was like, 'This will never see the light of day.' I don't mind that it did, because I actually think it starts a very beautiful conversation of queer. I think queer joy is so special and so magical.'

Explaining her evolving understanding of identity, Siwa said she's no longer interested in strict labels: 'Queer is a beautiful umbrella term for the LGBTQIA community. I think that for me to be a woman and say I have a non-binary partner, but then also say I'm a lesbian is crazy. I just realized within myself that the way my eyes are to the world, I think I'm just queer.
"It has nothing to do with anything besides that. It's nothing to be ashamed of. The world is going crazy with that one though. It flabbergasts me.'

Prior to her relationship with Hughes, Siwa briefly dated Australian creator Kath Ebbs, who is non-binary. Their split reportedly happened during the Big Brother wrap party in April.
Siwa has also been outspoken about the discomfort she feels with certain language. After telling Yahoo! Life in 2022 that she 'doesn't like the word 'lesbian,'' she clarified on TikTok: 'I never said that 'lesbian' was a dirty word. It's not a bad word, it's not a slur, it's especially not a word that I am ashamed of saying or ashamed of identifying as by any means.'
In that interview, she compared the term to words people find unappealing simply by sound: 'I don't like the word itself. It's just like a lot... It's like the word moist. It's just like… ugh!' She added on TikTok, 'I don't hate the word lesbian… it's not the word that flows off the tongue for me, if that makes sense.'

Sharon Osbourne's furious X Factor outburst at 'pensioner' who slammed Ozzy

Sharon Osbourne once revealed she hilariously launched a pen at a pensioner who attempted to speak badly of her husband Ozzy while she was on The X Factor Sharon Osbourne once declared war on a "pensioner" who made the decision to have a go at her late husband, Ozzy. Sharon, 72, has never been one to mince her words and during an interview about her return to The X Factor, the music manager opened up about the interaction with the man who bravely attempted to say negative things about her husband Ozzy. ‌ In 2013, Sharon left the showbiz industry in shock when she returned to the talent show just six years after she dramatically left the programme. But in true Mrs O style, she didn't hold back when she spoke about one contestant. ‌ Speaking on Alan Carr's Chatty Man about the incident, the fiery redhead exclaimed: "I did too!" when asked if it was true she'd launched a pen at the contestant. "And it should have been a knife, really!" she went on to add. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. ‌ When asked why she'd launched the pen, Sharon explained: "This old bloke comes in and starts slagging my old man, so I'm like 'Here, what can I throw at you?' so I'm like 'You can f**k off', threw a pen at him. You little f***er!" But when Alan asked why somebody would attempt to disrespect Ozzy in front of Sharon, she fumed: "They know what they're going to get. How dare he! I'm nearly a pensioner, so f**k him!" ‌ The clip, which has resurfaced on TikTok, has racked up an impressive 58,000 views and was flooded with comments, with many laughing over Sharon's quick wit. "Sharon Osbourne. What a woman," said one. A second went on to write: "Absolute brilliance, love Sharon." "I want their marriage when I'm older and I won't settle for less," said another. The resurfacing of the clip comes just hours after Sharon sadly buried Ozzy. In keeping with the rockstar's wishes, he was buried in the grounds of his sprawling family home, where he shared many happy memories with Sharon, and where he spent his final weeks. ‌ The funeral followed an emotionally-charged day in Birmingham, that saw the Prince of Darkness made one final trip through his home city. Thousands of fans lined the streets to pay their respects and say goodbye as a procession led by Ozzy's hearse travelled from the Aston Villa football ground through the city centre. In moving scenes, the procession stopped outside the Black Sabbath bridge, where the frontman's wife and children stepped out of their cars to lay down roses wrapped in black paper among the sea of tributes left by fans. ‌ Ozzy's widow, Sharon, was seen for the first time since his death and was overcome by emotion as she took in the outpouring of love for her husband. As she broke down in tears, Sharon was comforted by children Jack, Kelly, and Aimee. The grandchildren of Sharon and Ozzy were also close by for the family moment. Last week, the Osbourne family announced that Ozzy had died at the age of 76, just days after he appeared on stage at his farewell Back to the Beginning concert, in his beloved hometown of Birmingham. In a statement, the Osbourne family, including Kelly and Sharon, had said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis."

Sydney Sweeney's jeans ad sparks backlash over 'eugenics-coded' messaging

Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad has fans divided with some saying it's cheeky while others claim it echoes a darker beauty ideal rooted in eugenics. But is it just about jeans, or something deeper Sydney Sweeney's recent jeans advert has sparked furious backlash over its 'eugenics-coded' messaging. The Euphoria star recently teamed up with popular brand American Eagle for their Fall 2025 campaign and while the ad first appeared cheeky and light-hearted, fans are picking up on deeper racial and genetic undertones. ‌ In the ad, Sydney says: 'Genes are passed down from parent to offspring, often determining traits from hair colour to personality and even eye colour - my genes are blue.' ‌ A voiceover then adds: 'Sydney Sweeney has great genes." In the US, American Eagle's billboard ads show the word 'genes' crossed out and replaced with 'jeans'. The controversial ad comes amidst the release of adult content creator Bonnie Blue's Channel 4 documentary. ‌ While some think the campaign is harmless, many say it taps into the ideology of eugenics - the belief that the human race could be 'improved' by increasing the presence of traits considered desirable, traits historically linked to whiteness. Eugenics was developed in the late 19th century by Sir Francis Galton, and later used to justify discrimination against minority groups and people with disabilities. Although the ideology is now widely condemned, it helped lay the groundwork for how society continues to define beauty and value. ‌ At the time of writing, the ad appears to have been pulled following mounting backlash but it hasn't stopped the flood of reactions online. For more stories like this subscribe to our weekly newsletter, The Weekly Gulp, for a curated roundup of trending stories, poignant interviews, and viral lifestyle picks from The Mirror's Audience U35 team delivered straight to your inbox. ‌ But TikTok users are far more divided. One influencer said: 'If you're not media illiterate, you probably think this is harmless. However, this perpetuates a long line of racism and eugenics that has been present in not just America but all over the world.' 'In the extremely conservative climate we're in today where right-wing, white nationalism and patriotism is rising, this advert is a dog whistle to the racists out there, confirming their way of thinking and way of life is correct.' Another TikTok user agreed, while comparing old eugenics ads to the American Eagle Campaign saying "Through certain types of imagery we can very much tell that this is a eugenics ad, this ad subliminally encourages the reader to reproduce with a certain type of woman." ‌ "I would even say that Sydney Sweeney's ad is more direct than these two, the highly sexualised ad to reframe the viewer's mind of what ideal genes are." On the other hand, an X user wrote: "The backlash to Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad campaign is just insane. My God, you can like the ad or not, but there's nothing racist about it.' ‌ A TikTok user agreed with the above comment saying "If Sydney Sweeney was ugly, you'd have no problem with her saying she has good genes - you'd be saying, yes girl!" The backlash has also reignited a wider conversation about beauty standards in marketing and how brands, even unintentionally, risk reinforcing outdated ideals through careless copy and campaign choices. As the fallout continues, sources close to the company told TMZ that the online backlash is "absurd." The insider said that, according to their independent polling, many actually like their ad. According to TMZ, 71% of the people who AE polled found the infamous Sydney jean ad to be "appealing." ‌ In response to the negative reaction to the ad, the source said: "This is yet another example of how social media is just not reflective of real life. The absurd response from some corners of the internet is absolutely not reflective of how American Eagle's customers feel. "The bottom line is that this was about creating a great pair of jeans and supporting a very worthy cause through some of the proceeds going to domestic violence prevention. Anything beyond that is noise that is not registering with the average person. "Regardless of how people feel about the ad, we hope they can agree we should be doing more to support and empower those who are experiencing domestic violence." The insider, according to American Eagle, is not a representative for the company. The Mirror requested further comment from American Eagle and Sydney Sweeney.
