
PlayStation Has Its Head In The Sand About Its Live Service Future
While fans wait for crumbs of new information about PlayStation games like Intergalactic or Wolverine, Sony is continuing to tout their current and future live service plans, saying that it is "very, very committed to building a diverse and a resilient live-service portfolio,' according to boss Herman Hulst.
This is in the wake of promises that PlayStation has learned lessons from the failure of Concord: "We have reviewed our processes in light of this to deeply understand how and why that title failed to meet expectations and to ensure we're not going to make the same mistakes again,' Hulst said.

But looking at Sony's plans in the plain light of day, and despite all this projected confidence, it very much feels like the company is burying its head in the sand when it comes to the reality of its situation. Of the games pictured on its live-service planning sheet, we can break most of them down in different ways:

Helldivers 2 – An unequivocal success story, one of the only ones Sony has had during this recent push, but something of a limited-time offer. Developer Arrowhead is not a Sony studio, and it has announced that because Helldivers 2 has done so well, that they are able to self-fund and publish their next game without Sony's help at all. While they say it's no shade to Sony, it reinforces that Arrowhead is not some sort of in-house live-service powerhouse they can rely on indefinitely, and they will be moving on.
Destiny 2 Frontiers
Destiny 2 – The decade-spanning series is something of a miracle in the land of live services, and you can say it actually helped launch the entire trend. But in year 11, things are scaling way down in the post-Light and Darkness era. The game has gone from record highs to record lows as it moves toward a new 'Frontiers' era, which will allow the game to subsist, but it is simply never going to reach previously high water marks from here. Sony will also not allow Bungie to put D2 to bed in order to take time to make a Destiny 3 that may never even get here as D2 shambles on past its expiration date.
Marathon
Marathon – Herman Hulst made headlines calling the game 'bold and innovative' and slides touting 'strong engagement' about the game, but it's just sandblasting away the enormous issues facing Marathon, a quadruple combo blow of 1) a poor gameplay showcase, 2) mixed-to-poor alpha feedback, 3) a headline-dominating art plagiarism scandal, 4) a post-alpha, post-plagiarism livestream that did little to reassure anyone on any front. Marathon is in deep trouble, and it will take something of a miracle for this game to land the way Sony wants it to as an industry hit.
Fairgame$
Fairgames – The head of the studio, Jade Raymond, just left the project. Reports of internal tests say the game is bad. We have not seen or heard anything from it in almost two years. This is either going to be cancelled ahead of release or explode on the launchpad. If any game had a Concord-like future ahead of it, if it did actually come out, it's Fairgames.
Those are the listed games. The other major, non-cancelled projects we know about are an upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn multiplayer monster-hunter, where we've seen almost nothing from it, and it will involve the always-risky idea of trying to convert fans of a single player series into something that's a dedicated multiplayer offering.
Sony carved out a chunk of Bungie to make a new, in-house studio working on the game codenamed Gummy Bears, which does not have a name or any sort of preview footage, and while internal tests have been positive, it's hardly the first time we've heard that before.
Perhaps the most promising item is what we have the least amount of information about, that Jason Blundell has his own studio inside Sony now and may make something cool akin to his Black Ops Zombies experience. But again, zero information here.
Sony may be putting on a brave face, but things are going poorly. Its next two live games are probably not even a coinflip of whether they fail or not, and if there are any ones that work past that, they're still years away with literally nothing public shown about any of them. It's not good.

Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 3 Headphone Review: Fantastic for Gaming, With One Big Compromise
Turtle Beach is no stranger to good gaming headsets. As far as my friends were concerned, they were essential if you wanted to be considered a "serious" gamer. The company's Stealth 700 Gen 3 sits just below its Stealth Pro line and offers an impressive range of features for $200. For starters the headphones has big, 60mm drivers, plus multiple wireless transmitters as well as Bluetooth. The PC version even includes the option for 24-bit audio, sadly at the cost of Xbox compatibility. Speaking of compatibility, the non-24-bit version will work with PC, Xbox, PlayStation and any Bluetooth device like a phone or Nintendo Switch. The CrossPlay button on the right earcup lets you instantly switch between the wireless transmitters. You can even stream audio from a Bluetooth-connected device and the wireless transmitter simultaneously so you can listen to an epic playlist from your phone while dominating on the battlefield. What I like about the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 3 Lori Grunin/CNET The ear cups are quite comfortable. The cushions are memory foam and covered in a leatherette material that never got uncomfortable or hot for me while wearing them for long periods. Turtle Beach also has what they call "ProSpecs" technology, which is supposedly glasses-friendly. As a spectacle-clad gamer, I appreciated how comfortable they were while wearing my glasses. Other headsets I've worn were not as accommodating. The mic is cleverly hidden away in the left ear cup, and when you pull it down, it automatically unmutes. For the Gen 3, Turtle Beach has added AI-assisted noise reduction to the microphone, which worked very well for me during video calls. I don't play many multiplayer games, so I wasn't able to test it out during gameplay. Judging by my experience on several video calls I'd say it works well. I wouldn't say it's significantly better than what any other company is doing, but it's good at what it does. The left earcup also houses the power button, USB-C charging port, two control wheels - one of which is remappable. There's also a remappable Mode button which by default toggles Turtle Beach's Superhuman hearing mode which increases the sounds of gunshots and footsteps. On the right earcup is the Bluetooth pairing button, Bluetooth volume control wheel and CrossPlay button for switching between sources. What I don't like about the Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 3 Lori Grunin/CNET As my colleague Lori Grunin pointed out in her Stealth Pro review, having a single Bluetooth button can be a double-edged sword. Since Bluetooth headphones automatically connect to the most recently connected device the headphones are always jumping back and forth between devices. So this might take a moment to remedy at the start of a play session. To be honest, with all the buttons and controls on the Stealth 700, it took me a while to learn them all. At times it became annoying. I'd have to remember which wheel controlled volume for which device. Sometimes I'd hit one when trying to readjust the headset. What I'd really have liked was a master volume wheel that decreased everything at once. CNET Oddly, I noticed that the power indicator light around the power button would blink rapidly while it was on instead of remaining solid green. It wasn't a deal-breaker for me since I couldn't see it, but it seemed the opposite of what a blinking light means on other gear. There's a bit of a downside to those big drivers and extra cushiony ear cups: the Stealth 700 is a bit heavy. It never became uncomfortable or painful, but I would instantly feel them with even the slightest head movement. I was always conscious that they were on my head and I always had to be careful of never moving my head too quickly. What might be a bigger dealbreaker for some, and became more of an issue for me the longer I used them, is the lack of any sort of active noise cancellation. With lots of far cheaper headphones offering noise canceling, albeit not gaming headsets, that seems a drawback for the price of the Stealth 700s. I also liked these headphones enough to use them as my daily headphones, but trying to work in a coffee shop without any noise cancellation can be tough. Lori Grunin/CNET The lack of noise cancellation likely helps Turtle Beach's claim that the Stealth 700 gets up to 80 hours of battery life. That's pretty impressive for a gaming headset like this. While 80 hours may be technically achievable, you'll likely never see battery life that high. For me, while gaming an average of 2 to 3 hours a day, a charge lasted about two weeks. Turtle Beach also claims it can fast charge to give you 3 hours of gaming time in about 15 minutes. Customization of the buttons and EQs takes place in the Turtle Beach Swarm II app, which also lets you adjust mic levels, chat settings and most other typical gaming adjustments. The software can be a bit confusing, even glitchy, at times though. It had trouble recognizing the 700 headset a few times, especially when connected via Bluetooth. Should you buy the Stealth 700 Gen 3? The third generation of the Stealth 700 headset is a significant upgrade from the Gen 2 and it offers quite a few more substantial features than other headsets at this price. If you're in the market for a new gaming headset, the Stealth 700 will give you just about everything you could ask for and then some... except noise canceling. Lastly, there are three versions of the Stealth 700 Gen 3. The Xbox version is compatible with every platform. The Playstation is compatible with PC and the PC versions is capable of 24-bit audio as well as being compatible with PlayStation. All versions can also connect to Bluetooth devices.

Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Review: Overkill for Most
The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 (or Elite 2 for short) has arguably been the industry gold standard for a pro-level game controller for the past decade. Over the years dozens of competitors have cropped up, hoping to give Microsoft a run for its money. While the Elite 2 still isn't perfect, it still sets the bar high. What I like about the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 One of the best things the Elite 2 has going for it is the layout -- it's almost identical to the standard Xbox controller that ships with every console. If you've used Microsoft's Xbox controllers of the past few generations, you'll feel right at home here. This is a good thing, as the design of the controller hasn't changed significantly in well over a decade. It wasn't broken, so they didn't need to fix it. The hardware of the controller is also top-notch. There's nothing necessarily wrong with the buttons on the standard controller, but the moment you hold the Elite 2 in your hands, you can instantly feel a difference. The buttons feel more solid and the D-pad is noticeably improved as well. Jason Cockerham/CNET Pro-grade customization What really makes this controller, well, elite are the extra features and customization. In addition to the improved main buttons you get four extra buttons -- paddles, technically. These sit right where your index and middle fingers rest on the back of the controller so they're easy to hit without having to think much about it. They're also attached magnetically, so you can quickly remove them if you don't want them. Each paddle can be customized to a specific button or button combo. This can be quite helpful for performing actions without having to take your finger off the joystick. For example, reloading weapons or activating secondary firing modes during FPS games, casting specific spells in RPGs, and so on. For most gamers this may not make a big difference in your play style, but for the more hardcore gamers, for whom every millisecond counts, it can come in quite handy. To top it off, you can create custom profiles for each layout and assign up to three at a time to the controller. The memory button in the center allows for quick switching so you can hop between your favorite games without missing a beat. Jason Cockerham/CNET Microsoft didn't just stop at extra buttons. The triggers, joysticks and D-pad can also be customized. Included with the Elite 2 is a second D-pad with just the four directions (as opposed to the preinstalled octagonal one) if you prefer, as well as several different joystick heights. This latter aspect I didn't think would make a big difference until I tried the tallest stick for my aiming controls. Instantly, I became a much better shot. There are also a few extra joystick covers that can give you a different grip for each one. The coolest part, which is not something I've seen on another controller, is that you can customize the tension for each joystick. In the box is a small tool that lets you turn the joysticks to increase or decrease the tension to your preference. When I first got my controller, my fingers started hurting after a while, but after I adjusted the tension down, I didn't have any more issues. While it might be a bit more convenient to simply swap in new batteries when the controller dies, I'd often forget to order more. So when I ran out I'd just end up having to plug it in to play anyway. Now, with the wireless charging stand included, I can just drop it there between play sessions to recharge. Conveniently, it will also recharge when plugged in while you're playing. Microsoft claims about 40 hours of playtime on a single charge, which is a bit low compared to other controllers. I hit closer to 30-35 hours in my testing, but that's not terrible. What I don't like about the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Jason Cockerham/CNET Some people might prefer a heftier controller, but I don't. The Elite 2 is certainly the heaviest controller I've used and it's noticeable. It made my hands tired much more quickly than other controllers I've used. Also, the textured grip feels weird to me. I'm not sure why, and I can't explain it, but the Elite controller is actually the slipperiest controller I've used. I don't know if it's because the grips wrap around fully or if my hands just produce too much oil or what, but I could never fully escape the feeling that I was going to drop it. However, while you can connect to almost any device that supports Bluetooth, including a PC, smartphone or tablet, the controller doesn't remember which devices it's been paired with. This means you'll have to manually re-pair it every time you switch devices. It's not the end of the world, but if you regularly play on multiple devices and want one controller to use between them, it can be annoying. Jason Cockerham/CNET Should you buy the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2? The Elite 2 controller is an incredible piece of hardware. The buttons are solid and clicky, and the customization options are among the best in the industry. However, it struggles with connecting to multiple devices, and the battery life isn't great. It's also probably overkill for most people. But if you're looking for something more advanced than the standard Xbox controller and are willing to shell out for it, the Elite 2 is one of the best you can get. When the Elite 2 first launched it was $180. That's a lot for a controller, regardless of how good it is. However, the Elite 2 can currently be had for $159 at most retailers. You can find refurbished ones for less. There are also numerous sales throughout the year -- Prime Day is coming soon -- where you can probably snag one for even less. There are rumors of a Series 3 coming, but no definitive info yet as to when.
