Jacksonville man convicted of murdering 8-year-old girl fighting for life sentence review
Action News Jax has been following the case since Clifton was first found dead in 1998. The case has gained national attention, in part, because of its nature. Clifton's body had been found beaten and stabbed in Phillips' waterbed. He was 14 years old at the time and was sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole.
Phillips made his first appearance inside a Duval County courtroom on Monday since 2017. During a hearing where the judge was expected to set a date to review his sentence, his recently appointed lawyers asked for at least a few months' time in preparing a case to argue for Phillips to receive a new sentence.

The case they're expected to make is Phillips' age both when he committed the murder and when he was first convicted. Criminal defense attorney Chris Carson says the Florida Supreme Court has ruled against minors receiving a life sentence since Phillips' conviction.
'If someone was under the age of 18, there had to be some manner of opportunity for that person to seek recourse,' Carson said.
Phillips and his lawyers had made this argument in Duval County court back in 2017, but he was resentenced to life in prison after the court rejected it. Court records show another attempt by his lawyers to have his sentence reviewed in 2020, but the Florida Supreme Court denied it.
Carson tells Action News Jax he doesn't expect Phillips' sentence to change because of the nature of the murder and the attention it has received.
'The technical reality is he has to be given an opportunity to present that evidence,' said Carson, 'the practical reality is it would take some very compelling evidence for a judge to modify the sentence at this point.'
Whatever case Phillips' lawyers decide to make, Carson said it could take months for them to build it.
'There can be things that involve, you know, psychologists, psychiatrists, even medical doctors. So, depending on the nature of the mitigation, that's going to dictate the timeline,' Carson said.
The judge ordered that the next day, this case would go to court on July 8th. We're expecting to hear an update from Phillips' lawyers on where they are in building their case for a sentence review.

More than a dozen YouTubers were affected by the subpoena, including well-known figures like Candace Owens, as well as some lesser-known creators on the platform. These YouTubers reportedly received notice of the subpoenas via the email accounts linked to their Google profiles. Meanwhile, the notices indicated that they were sent from Esra Hudson, Lively's attorney, at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. YouTubers Labeled Blake Lively A 'Bully' After Receiving Subpoena Notice Reacting to the subpoena, one of the YouTubers, Andy Signore, host of the YouTube channel Popcorned Planet, slammed the actress as a "bully" who is trying to silence them. "It's shocking to be honest," Signore told the news outlet. "Not because I have anything to hide, but because she thinks she can just bully and intimidate independent journalists. I won't let her." He also stated that he plans to legally fight "all of it" rather than allow his information to be handed over to the actress. Florida-based Lauren Neidigh was also one of the YouTubers who received the subpoena notice. Speaking with the Daily Mail, she claimed she was "so shocked" when she saw it and had to reach over to her friends to look at the document before reaching a decision on her next step. "Now we've determined this is real and not a scam, I intend to file my own motion to quash and fight her myself," Neidigh said. The Influencers Hinted At Why Blake Lively Issued The Subpoenas Although Lively has yet to confirm the validity of the subpoena or the actual reason behind it, there is speculation that she intends to use the information to support claims that Baldoni allegedly hired content creators to smear her. "Maybe she thinks it'll show people were paid or benefiting in some way to cover her case, because she says the smear campaign is ongoing," Neidigh said. "That's absolutely not true. But they are terrified of being blacklisted by Ryan, CAA, etc," he shared. Signore added, "So, they appeared anonymously, blurred and with masks on to protect their identities. I believe Blake and Ryan want those sources. I will not betray those sources." The Judge Ruled In Favor Of Blake Lively To Choose The Deposition Location The revelation comes just hours after Lively won the right to choose the location for her deposition in the sexual harassment lawsuit. As reported by The Blast, Baldoni's attorneys had initially requested that the deposition be held at one of the law firms involved in the case. However, Lively's legal team argued against it in a motion, claiming the actress could be ambushed by paparazzi while arriving at or leaving the location. Although Baldoni's attorneys countered back with the argument that the actress was trying to use her celebrity status to influence the proceedings, the judge ultimately ruled in her favor. The location of the deposition remains unknown, as it was redacted from the publicly available transcript. Man shot multiple times while driving in Downtown Jacksonville
A man was shot multiple times on Dennis Street in Downtown Jacksonville on Tuesday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred around 5:25 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his groin, back, and arm, police said. Who is Edward J. Zakrzewski II? Airman who killed family is 9th DeSantis death warrant in 2025
Nearly 30 years after a former Eglin Air Force Base airman was convicted of savagely murdering his family, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed his death warrant to potentially make him the ninth person put to death in Florida in 2025. Edward J. Zakrzewski II pleaded guilty to killing his wife Sylvia inside their Okaloosa County home in 1994 by bludgeoning her with a crowbar, strangling her and striking her with a machete, according to court records. Then he turned the machete on his 7-year-old son, Edward, and his 5-year-old daughter, Anna, hacking them to death. Zakrzewski, now 60, was sentenced to death for all three murders. In signing Zakrzewski's death warrant on July 1, DeSantis set the stage to break the modern-day record for number of executions in one calendar year set by former governors Bob Graham in 1984 and Rick Scott in 2014, with six months still left to go in 2025. There are currently 269 people on Florida's death row. More than 100 of them have been there for more than 30 years, according to the Department of Corrections. Zakrzewski is scheduled to be executed on July 31, just two weeks after the scheduled execution of Michael Bell, who was convicted of murdering a Jacksonville couple in 1993 in a revenge killing aimed at the wrong person. Should the scheduled executions go forward, this will be the second month in 2025 when two executions were held. Jeffrey Hutchinson and Glen E. Rogers were both put to death in May. Anthony F. Wainwright was executed in June. There have been executions every month this year except for January. Zakrzewski, who a neighbor testified had previously stated on two prior occasions that he would kill her and the children before he let that happen, bought a machete on his lunch break. At their Mary Esther home, after sharpening the machete, he placed it, a crowbar and some rope around the house, court records show. Then he went back to work and even attended a college course that evening. When he got home, he sent the children to watch TV and then attacked Sylvia Zakrzewski with the crowbar. Zakrzewski dragged her to the bedroom, hit her again, court records said. He also choked her with the rope. Zakrzewski called his son to brush his teeth and struck him with the machete multiple times, nearly decapitating him, then attacked and killed his daughter Anna. Afterward, Zakrzewski drove to Orlando and flew to Hawaii, changed his name and lived with a family who ran a religious commune, according to court records. Four months later, the family saw his picture on the TV show "Unsolved Mysteries" and he turned himself in the next day. Exhaustive attempts at appeals have been denied and the Florida Supreme Court has upheld his conviction and sentences. In 1999, the U.S. Supreme Court denied his petition to review the case. If the execution happens as scheduled, Zakrzewski's death is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Florida State Prison in Raiford. How many death row inmates has Florida executed? From 1924 until May 1964, the state of Florida executed 196 people. There were no executions from May 1964 until May 1976. In 1972, the United States Supreme Court struck down the death penalty, but it was reinstated in 1976. Florida has carried out 112 executions since then. DeSantis is on track to set a new record for number of executions in Florida in a calendar year. When is the next execution in Florida? Michael Bell, 54, is scheduled to be put to death on June 24.
