'Botched' restoration to church Virgin Mary statue sparks huge protests from furious worshippers in Spain

Daily Mail24-06-2025
The restoration of an iconic 17th century statue of the Virgin Mary has sparked huge protests in Seville after worshippers said her makeover left her looking like she had undergone plastic surgery.
The Virgin of La Macarena is one of Spain 's most famed Catholic effigies, and many Spaniards travel south every year to catch a glimpse of the wooden figure during the city's Holy Week parades.
So when the Brotherhood of the Macarena unveiled the surprise restoration over the weekend, her devotees were outraged, with critics saying she had been disfigured.
According to her worshippers, her face was given a glossier finish, while her eye lashes were made longer, which they say altered her gaze.
'Her facial expression has completely changed,' one outraged worshipper told Spanish newspaper El Pais. 'It pains me deeply to say it, but she looks like a poor copy of the original.'
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Basilica de la Macarena on Monday calling for the resignation of the brotherhood's leader.
Footage shows faithful gathered round the church singing hymns about the Virgin as they demanded answers.
'This isn't her; this isn't the Virgin of Seville. It's sad. My heart is about to burst out,' one protester told ABC newspaper. 'They should have left her as she was.'
Such has been the outrage that the statue is reported to have undergone two more restorations in less than 24 hours to get her back to her original state.
The brotherhood issued an apology and closed the basilica over the weekend, and the Virgin has since emerged with shortened eyelashes after efforts to correct an 'undesired effect.'
The religious icon's controversial makeover has been likened to the botched art restoration of a painting of Jesus Christ, which resulted in the painting being dubbed: 'Monkey Christ'.
In 2012, Cecilia Giménez, 82, decided to touch up the 'Ecce Homo' (Behold The Man) fresco in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy church in Borja, northern Spain.
However, her brushwork completely obliterated the face of Jesus transforming the painting into what locals described as more like a hedgehog or hairy monkey rather than Jesus.
It also comes after a Polish village was outraged earlier this year after a botched renovation of a 1820 shrine of Jesus and the Virgin Mary left the Blessed Mother looking like a 'Simpsons' cartoon character.
Once described by experts as 'tall and slender', the Virgin Mary statue just outside the village of Stuszionka now has oversized mitten-like hands, exaggerated eyes and a crooked frown accentuated by bright red lipstick.
The figure of Jesus, meanwhile, appears to be wearing grey underpants, and both figures have been repainted with an unnatural yellow hue.
Posting a photo on Facebook, the Conservator of Monuments said: 'A rather rare depiction of the Virgin Mary looking upwards.
'Another example of good intentions... Let's hope that in the near future this valuable object will receive professional conservation, because it deserves it very much.'
It added that the unknown restorer had also painted over the shrine's original German inscription, replacing it with the markings 'VII 2024, JC 2,' written in what appears to be a black marker pen.
Locals vented their fury with the botch job, with some describing it as 'desecration'.
Posting on social media, one outraged viewer said: 'The times of the greatest barbarity and ignorance of Spirit and Reason have come.'
Another commented: 'I would take a risk and notify the prosecutor's office about offending religious feelings. Because this is nothing more than an example of desecrating an object of religious worship.'
'It looks more like Bart Simpson than The Mother Mary,' said another.

Disturbing new Marbella burglary case as actress reveals thieves stole Chanel bag and £52,000 Rolex while she slept - days after intruder inspected woman lying naked in her bed

An actress has been left terrified after thieves broke into her Marbella flat as she slept and stole nearly £60,000 from her. Noemi Hopper, a Spanish actress who has starred in a Disney+ series, took to TikTok to vent her frustrations after burglars broke into a flat in Benahavís, Marbella, she and her friends were staying in. On July 21, the five tenants woke up to discover that someone had Noemi's blue Chanel handbag, valued at €8,600 (£7,460), as well as a Rolex watch worth €60,000 (£52,000). It is the latest late-night break in to hit Marbella, after a horrified mother revealed that a pervert burglar broke into her home and leered at her as she slept naked. Noemi said: 'I just woke up and we've realised that last night some thieves entered the house we're staying at.' She said while weeping: 'And they have taken my friend's watch. They have taken my blue Chanel bag. I mean, they must have been super-professional.' Local media reported that while the property she and her friends were staying in normally has a security guard service and alarm, they were not set on the night of the robbery. The young people staying in the flat believe the burglar, or burglars, broke into the house through the living room's sliding door. Spanish cops are now looking into the incident, after Noemi filed a complaint. Last week, a woman told how she felt violated after a burglar broke into her home in the dead of the night and leered at her naked body as she slept. Angie Castillo was in a deep sleep laying next to her boyfriend Alex Varona, 34, when the intruder hold a torch gained entry to their Costa Del Sol property and and 'inspect' her close up. Angie, a mother-of-one, was unaware of what had happened to her until the following day when she noticed her purse was missing and the couple checked the CCTV footage in their home. To their horror, the 32-minute clip showed the masked raider silently creeping around their bedroom looking at Angie on the bed. He appeared to be fixated with her as he repeatedly shone his torch over her body. Speaking exclusively to MailOnline Angie said she could have been raped if she'd been sleeping alone. 'I looked at the camera and my blood ran cold', she said. 'The guy came into the room eight times. He was looking in between my legs, at my intimate parts, looking at my face. He forgot all about the burglary. He was more interested in looking at me.' 'I was very scared, I was shaking. I was in shock. The day before my boyfriend Alex had been in Germany. If I had been alone this man might have raped me. 'Half an hour after he left the house, I went to the toilet. Perhaps if I had seen him I would have screamed. Alex would have done something. But the intruder might have been carrying a knife or a pistol.' Angie Castillo and her partner Alex Varona, a black belt jiu-jitsu champion, were both sound asleep when the pervert burglar entered their home in Marbella last month 'I am still traumatised by this,' she said. 'Before I go to the toilet at night, I look at the cameras. If Alex leaves the bed at night, I jump. I am now seeing a psychologist.' Instead of stealing her gold ring, €400 Philipp Plein watch or other jewellery, he only took €300 in cash from her purse and dumped it. Spanish police are analysing the security footage to identify the suspect, but no arrests have been yet made.

Witness History Eta's assassination of Juan Mari Jáuregui

On 29 July 2000, retired Spanish politician Juan Mari Jáuregui was assassinated by Basque separatists Eta. Deemed a terrorist organisation by the European Union, Eta killed more than 800 people between 1968 and 2010. Its goal was to create an independent Basque state out of territory in south-west France and northern Spain. Following Jáuregui's murder, his widow Maixabel Lasa worked to help victims of political violence and highlight their suffering, weakening Eta's support. A decade later, she received a message from one of the men involved in Jáuregui's murder. He wanted to meet her and take responsibility for his actions, beginning a remarkable friendship. In 2011, Eta declared a permanent ceasefire, and formally disbanded in 2018. Maixabel Lasa speaks to Ben Henderson. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Tourists terrified as fighter jet performs ultra-low pass over beach during Spanish air show

Tourists screamed for their lives as a plane performed a terrifying low pass over a crowded beach during an airshow in Spain. Footage circulating online shows the Spanish Air Force EF-18 Hornet fighter jet hurtling towards a beach packed full of sunbathers after executing an acrobatic stunt in the sky. Puffs of black smoke escape from the jet as it turns upside-down in the air, before swooping down to what appears to be just yards above the golden sand. Crowds of tourists on San Lorenzo Beach in northern Spain can be seen filming the incident on their phones, awestruck at the frightening sight, while some beach-goers appear to let out screams in shock. In another video, groups of onlookers stationed on a hill to film the airshow can be heard raising their voices in alarm at the spectacle. The jet was performing as part of the nineteenth edition of the Gijon Air Festival held on Sunday July 27 over San Lorenzo Bay in Asturias, Spain. After momentarily swooping near onlookers on the sand, the loud jet can be seen continuing its flight away from the populated beach. Around 250,000 attend the Gijon Air Festival annually - Spain's popular aeronautical event which began in 2006. The frightening scenes sparked a discussion online as to whether the stunt was planned, or a result of the pilot losing control. 'Very risky maneuver... is that allowed?' one user wrote on TikTok. 'For me it looked like he lost too much height during the roll and pulled up too hard, making him lose a lot of speed, unintentionally. Could be the perspective, too,' another wrote on Reddit. But some members of the public were impressed by the jet's performance. 'I witnessed that live and it was one of the best things I've seen in a long time,' one person said on TikTok.
