Sask. motorcyclists raise $31,000 in support of Regina's Prostate Assessment Centre
Despite the rainy weather impeding a planned rally, local motorcyclists have raised over $31,000 for the Hospitals of Regina Foundation – going towards the city's Prostate Assessment Centre.
'This started a number of years ago by a group of guys that have had prostate cancer. It's been in their family,' explained Darryl Haas, director of Regina Hog Chapter #9252.
'The assessment centre used to be in a storage room in one of the hospitals, and it was downstairs in the basement, kind of dungy and they said, 'You know what? This has to change.' That's where this ride came from.'
On Sunday, riders came out to Prairie Harley-Davidson in support of raising money and spreading awareness of prostate cancer.
Although the day was supposed to begin with a motorcycle ride, along with a live band and barbecue in Indian Head, Haas said the group had to cancel due to the rainy weather.
'We still came out to Prairie Harley-Davidson. We had our pancake breakfast, we had about 70 people show up this year which is fantastic without a ride,' he shared.
'All of the money that's raised today through a raffle draws or 50/50 is our donations or registrations goes towards the Prostate Assessment Center here in Regina.'
Trevor Davis, the treasurer of Regina Hog Chapter #9252, said having the support of the community is the reason it's been going strong for years.
'The community has been great. We've raised in excess of $25,000 already, not including what's going on here today,' Davis said. 'The community has really gotten out and been part of that. That's made us extremely happy and will give us food for thought for next year.'
Regardless of weather conditions come Sept. 14, Davis said it will be hosting a motorcycle ride to raise money for breast cancer.
'The fact that both the breast cancer ride and the prostate ride, we're very proud to be part of it because it's solely kept here in Regina and southern Saskatchewan,' he said. 'There's no overhead that's charged from it. Every donation that comes in goes to both of the assessment processes. That makes us really happy and the support from Prairie Harley-Davidson.'
Organizers added that everyone is welcome to attend – no matter what type of motorcycle you ride.

Vehicle lands on its roof in Friday afternoon crash in northeast Calgary
Two people suffered minor injuries when a car rolled over in northeast Calgary Friday after lunch. An investigation is underway after a vehicle rolled over onto its roof Friday afternoon in northeast Calgary. The incident took place after lunch at the intersection of Rundlehorn Drive and 36 Street N.E. A fire department spokesperson said a crew responded to incident and found two people suffering minor, non life-threatening injuries. An EMS spokesperson said it appeared both were able to get out themselves out of the vehicle rather than being ejected.

Sustainable showcase in Orillia to feature the future of boating
From the dock to Lake Couchiching, the future of boating will be on full display this weekend at the Sustainable Orillia Green Innovative Showcase. ENVGO is showcasing its fully electric hydrofoil prototype called the NV1. Mike Peasgood, CEO of ENVGO, said the hydrofoil is the main principal the electrification. 'The main principle behind that technology is a wing which sits underneath the water and it lifts the hull out of the water,' said Peasgood. 'That gives us some incredible efficiency and performance which really makes that electrification practical.' The sleek vessel promises to go farther and faster than gas-powered boats, with hydrofoils that lift it above the water for a smoother, more efficient ride. 'That's really the big differentiator beyond the zero emissions,' said Peasgood. 'We're not polluting the environment but we're also giving an overall better experience of that smooth flight over water and really showcase what that future of marine technology is going to look like.' Danny Epstein is the vice president of the Sustainable Orillia Green Innovation Showcase. The event runs Saturday July 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. He hopes people who attend the showcase have a better understanding of sustainability after walking through the grounds. 'We can't keep growing and we can't be dependent on growth all the time. and people need to understand that there are limits to growth,' said Epstein. 'We live in at a time where, obviously there's lots of evidence of climate change.' 'Boats that you do see here are new technology, particularly the ENVGO boat,' said Epstein. 'That's new Canadian technology, and it's clean technology.' Vendors like M-Oceans participating in the showcase say that electric will be the future of boating. 'Yes, 100% sustainability is where it's all headed towards, we see vessels from small inflatable dinghies to sailboats to even some larger power boats being converted, very actively today,' said Anatolii Shkliaruk, founder of M-Oceans. With functional benefits continuing to increase on EV vessels. 'Sailing off into the sunset with no noise, no gas, no clouds of smoke, and quiet,' said Shkliaruk. 'It aligns with the philosophy of sailing and boating in general and all the harbors and the small lakes are then clean with no spills. There's no oil and marine wildlife is preserved.' With a small fraction of electric boats in the water today, Peasgood believes there will be a shift coming. 'That's because it takes so much power to push the boat through the water. What we're building here, is the technology which gives us the efficiency so that electric becomes practical,' said Peasgood. 'I think, inevitably, we'll transition to electric, and this is a technology that we need to make that happen.' The showcase is free attend and will have activities for kids including face painting.

Manitoba to spend $115M on Highway 2 upgrades
The Manitoba government says it will spend $115 million to upgrade Provincial Trunk Highway 2. The province plans to repair and replace structures on the highway, which runs from the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border to the outskirts of Winnipeg, Premier Wab Kinew and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor announced Friday in a news release. Part of that project will include the rehabilitation of 15 kilometres of Highway 5, north of Highway 2, which is expected to lift restrictions and boost the axle weights allowed on the road during spring thaws, the news release said. Other upgrades include grading repairs on Highway 34, where a temporary guardrail and reduced speed limit were installed to increase safety, the release said. Two bridges near Highway 2 are also set to be replaced over the Assiniboine River. One of those bridges is along Highway 34, north of the community of Holland. The other is at Spruce Woods, which is crucial for visitors heading to Spruce Woods Provincial Park, the province said.
