Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz's leave extended through Aug. 31 amid MLB gambling probe
CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz will remain on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31 while he is the subject of a Major League Baseball gambling investigation. Ortiz's paid leave began on July 3 and was supposed to end on Friday before MLB and the MLB Players Association agreed to extend it. The team can continue to have contact with Ortiz, but he can't enter any of the Guardians' facilities. The Guardians said in a statement they have been informed of the extension and will continue to fully cooperate with the investigation. The investigation is related to in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by Ortiz that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and his recent outing against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and forwarded to MLB. The 26-year-old Ortiz is in his first season with Cleveland after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh last December. The right-hander is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 16 starts this season. In four big-league seasons, Ortiz is 16-22 with a 4.05 ERA and one save. Cleveland hosts the Athletics in a weekend series. The Guardians have won six of seven after a 10-game losing streak. The investigation into Ortiz comes a little more than a year after MLB suspended five players for gambling, including a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers — San Diego pitcher Jay Groome, Arizona pitcher Andrew Saalfrank and Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez — received one-year suspensions. Bryson DeChambeau lobbies for British Open to return to Trump-owned Turnberry
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Bryson DeChambeau appears to have a good relationship with President Donald Trump, with the pair once enjoying a round of golf that has been watched more than 15 million times on YouTube. Now the two-time major champion is doing some British Open campaigning for him. DeChambeau said Friday he's all for Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland hosting an Open for the first time since 2009. Turnberry has hosted four Opens — in 1977, 1986, 1994 and 2009 — but infrastructure hurdles have kept it from appearing more frequently in the rotation. Trump bought the resort in 2014. 'I look at it as a golf course,' DeChambeau said of the stunning links venue along the Ayrshire coast. 'It's one of the best golf courses in the world, and I'd love for it to be a part of the rotation. 'Albeit I haven't played it, I've heard so many great things about it, and anytime you get to play a special historical golf course like that, I think it's worthy of it, for sure.' Turnberry is still in the R&A's 10-venue Open rotation but isn't playing an active role. It last hosted the Open 16 years ago — before Trump bought the resort — when 59-year-old Tom Watson bogeyed the 72nd hole and lost in a playoff to Stewart Cink. Watson won the first Open at Turnberry 32 years earlier in the famed 'Duel in the Sun' with Jack Nicklaus. Speaking before the Open this week at Royal Portrush, R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said transportation and other issues had to be addressed before Turnberry gets its hands on the oldest major championship again. Darbon said the R&A met with Eric Trump and other leaders of Trump Golf a few months ago regarding the 'big logistical challenges' facing Turnberry and that the talks had been constructive. DeChambeau believes Trump would make Turnberry a special Open venue. 'He'd still probably respect the R&A and what they're trying to accomplish,' DeChambeau said. 'I can't speak on his behalf, but what I can say is knowing him, he'll do his best of a job as he possibly can.' DeChambeau's relationship with Trump is such that he joined him on stage at an election party in Florida in November before Trump was declared president again. DeChambeau also had a round of golf with Trump and some short-game practice on the South Lawn of the White House a few months ago. Around this time last year, they attempted to break 50 off the forward tees at the president's Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey using a scramble format. It went on YouTube and was a huge success. 'Got like 15 million views or something,' DeChambeau said. 'It was fun.' DeChambeau was speaking after shooting a 6-under 65 in the second round Royal Portrush in a bid to make the cut, having opened with a 78.

Trail Blazers' Yang Hansen honors Damian Lillard after signing news
Portland Trail Blazers rookie Yang Hansen showed love to new teammate Damian Lillard on Thursday following the news that the nine-time All-Star would be rejoining the organization. Lillard has reportedly agreed to sign a three-year, $42 million contract with the Trail Blazers after he was waived by the Milwaukee Bucks on July 6. He spent the first 11 years of his career in Portland before requesting a trade from the organization in July 2023. Shams Charania of ESPN was the first to report the news. The Trail Blazers' all-time leading scorer is expected to miss the entire 2025-26 season to rehabilitate a torn left Achilles tendon sustained on April 27. He underwent surgery to repair the injury on May 2 and is expected to make a full recovery. Though Lillard won't play next year, his addition has created buzz around the team after the group appeared to take a step forward in the second half of last season. Yang honored Lillard by recreating his patented "Dame Time" celebration, via Ben Golliver of the Washington Post. Yang is in the midst of a productive showing with the Trail Blazers in the NBA Summer League. The 7-footer is averaging 10.8 points, five rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 blocks on 45.7% shooting from the field, including 33.3% from 3-point range, in four appearances with the team. The 16th pick is highly touted for his overall skill set and ability as a player who can work in the paint, space the floor and protect the paint. He projects to contribute well at the next level and is eager to get to work with Lillard and the rest of the team next season.
