Shels boss O'Brien comfortable despite change ahead of Euro clash with Linfield
Nobody is anticipating this latest All-Island European competition derby to conclude as emphatically as the last. Ten months ago, Shamrock Rovers dismantled Larne 4-1 at Windsor Park. It was a battle of the champions, but not in the Champions League. Both had begun their journey in last year's supreme competition, proceeding to follow the path of middle to lower-sized country representatives by cascading into the new Conference guise. Shelbourne's meeting with Linfield on Wednesday is in many ways a different proposition. Firstly, there'll be two legs in the first qualifying round of the Champions League compared to the one-off nature of the Conference League phase. Regardless of the neighbourly aspect, this was billed as Damien Duff's debut on the European stage when the draw was made on June 17. Five days later, he quit, paving the way for his assistant Joey O'Brien to take the reins. He's only been one game at the helm as permanent boss, Friday's 3-1 over Cork City, before he leads Shels back into the Champions League for the first time in 17 years. 'To be honest, a lot has changed but a lot hasn't changed, really,' said former Ireland international O'Brien. 'It's still the same sort of thing; I'm coaching everyday, I'm out on the pitch everyday. 'I had a great relationship with the manager before, and I would have had a lot of say in a lot of meetings. I would have taken a lot of meetings. 'So in a way a lot has changed, but in a strange way nothing really has changed, if you know what I mean. He's a full squad to choose from. 'I pick the team now, I suppose, but again I'm picking the team with the staff and previously I was helping the manager pick the team,' he added. 'I've obviously got a personal relationship with the manager; he's a friend of mine, so as I said before, I think we'll be friends forever.' Healy is a regular visitor to the FAI Cup final, aware of the comparison between the two leagues. 'I like the league, I like the way it's played, I like the way it's advertised,' he said. 'You go to most grounds and there is a brilliant atmosphere, there's a brilliant crowd. 'It's something that everyone is trying to encourage in our league - to get people out, get the crowds coming to watch the games, and hopefully in time we can.' The second leg takes place next Wednesday at Windsor Park.

João Pedro sends Chelsea to Club World Cup final as stunners sink Fluminense
Fluminense 0-2 Chelsea (João Pedro 18, 56) The talk was mostly about Enzo Maresca wanting to add more guile to his attack when Chelsea signed João Pedro last week. Less was made of the former Brighton forward's ability to crash through an opposition defence. Then again Fluminense made João Pedro and were probably not surprised to find their former star in scintillating goalscoring form in this one-sided Club World Cup semi-final. Two thunderous finishes from the versatile attacker were enough to ensure that Chelsea will return to the MetLife Stadium to face Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid in Sunday's final. They can make £97m in prize money from this tournament, which is probably just as well given their spending. Up to £60m has been invested in João Pedro, although in fairness that looks like smart business judging by his first two performances for his new team. This was an impressive way for him to follow up his encouraging cameo against Palmeiras and will tell Maresca that he will have a lot of variety in attack next season. A special round of applause, too, to Fifa for finding a way to compromise its own product by staging this game with an intense afternoon sun beating down on New Jersey. It is pointless debating whether the people who make these calls have any real love for football. European audiences come first, and scant regard is given towards player welfare. 'We are going to try to adapt,' Maresca said, but it was tough with temperatures hitting 35C at kick-off, the humidity high and this roofless stadium far from full. The concern for Chelsea was that the heat would act as a leveller. Then again, Fluminense are the tournament's oldest team and hardly relished the brutal conditions. They were firm underdogs and began in tentative fashion, quickly retreating into a low block. Chelsea were boosted by Moisés Caicedo returning from suspension. Maresca was without the suspended Levi Colwill and Liam Delap but the Italian's resources are plentiful. Tosin Adarabioyo replaced Colwill in central defence and João Pedro got the nod over Nicolas Jackson up front. The composition of Chelsea's attack was intriguing. There was no place for Noni Madueke, who continues to be linked with Arsenal. Pedro Neto switched to the left and Christopher Nkunku drifted in from the right. Nkunku's movement was a positive feature during the first half, while his determination suggests he may yet have a future at the club. Thiago Silva, the former Chelsea centre-back, had his hands full. Cole Palmer's creativity caused problems and Enzo Fernández had a shot blocked. Chelsea looked too fast for the Brazilians. There were 18 minutes on the clock when Neto surged down the left. His low cross was half cleared and João Pedro seized possession on the edge of the area. The 23-year-old did not hesitate to punish his boyhood club. There was no celebration from João Pedro but nor was there any mercy. Having displayed his clever link-up play against Palmeiras, now he showed his technical side, setting himself before putting his laces through a shot that dipped and swerved beyond Fábio to give Chelsea a deserved lead. The challenge has been laid down to Jackson. He already had competition from Delap but now has the versatile João Pedro blocking his path. Maresca can afford to be ruthless. That said, he still needs his team to become cooler in the final third. Neto, Nkunku and Malo Gusto spurned chances to make it 2-0, offering Fluminense hope of a comeback. The game was more even when Chelsea's intensity dipped. Marc Cucurella cleared off the line from Hércules and Fluminense thought they had a penalty when Trevoh Chalobah handled a cross, only for the decision to be reversed after a review by the French referee, François Letexier. Chelsea had to respond. Fluminense made attacking changes at the start of the second half and almost equalised when Everaldo shot straight at Robert Sánchez moments after coming on. Now, though, there was more space for Chelsea on the break. Fluminense were forced to chase the game and leave gaps at the back. They pushed again, but Chelsea countered. Palmer rode a rough challenge and found Fernández, who sent João Pedro through on the left. The Brazilian still had a lot to do. He made it look easy. This time João Pedro cut inside, opened up his body and used his right foot to send a rising drive in off the underside of the bar. Crisp and clinical, Chelsea were on their way to the final. They looked for a third goal, Nkunku twice going close. Jackson came on looking to impress but wasted a late chance, shooting wide. It hardly mattered when Chelsea were so superior, though. The final promises to be far more taxing but the chance to become world champions is within their grasp. Guardian

Fluminense 0 Chelsea 2: Sensational Pedro fires Blues into Club World Cup final
JOAO PEDRO made it look easy - but the hard part now begins for Chelsea as they prepare for the Club World Cup final. A blistering double from new striker Pedro in obscene temperatures was enough to put the fourth best Premier League side in sight of the trophy and a £97 million windfall. 2 Joao Pedro scored two stunning goals on his first Chelsea start Credit: Getty 2 He refused to celebrate against his former side Credit: Getty However, things are going to get really sticky now in sweltering New Jersey because to get their hands on the jackpot they must overcome either European champions Paris or Real Madrid . While summer kickabout, the draw has been kind to them. They have swerved the biggest teams in Europe , PSG, Juventus , Inter Milan . Instead it's been Club Tunis, Benfica , Palmeiras and then a Fluminense side with a 40-year-old centre half and a keeper who is 44. READ MORE ON CHELSEA No wonder the old boy couldn't quite stretch his creaking bones to meet the wickedly curling shot and the cannonball pile driver from Stamford Bridge's new hero which settled the score. Not that we should take anything away from Pedro who lived up to his billing on his first start for Chelsea in an hour long display that suggests he is hitting the ground running. But facing the newly crowned winners of the Champions League or the royalty of world football from Spain will be a bit different to seeing off a team from Brazil who only just avoided relegation last season. Chelsea's £54M Wonderkid Estevão SNUBS Club World Cup to Say Goodbye to Palmeiras | From The Sports Desk | Sun Sport Not a bad little earner even if the players are knackered and will get only a couple of weeks off before they must start preparing for the looming Premier League season again. The money Chelsea have spent bringing in £60m Pedro, £30m Liam Delap and £48.5m Boss Enzo Maresca has taken this competition seriously like he does most things in life. For players like Cole Palmer, born and raised in wet and soggy Manchester , the summer heat must be a serious chore, bordering on unhealthy. He was one of only three English players in the starting XI for a game kicking off in mid-afternoon where it was touching 38 degrees in the sun. It'll be much the same this time next year when the real World Cup Final is staged here. Even so, the Premier League side took control of the game early on, obviously looking to get the game wrapped up before grown men started melting. An attack down the left orchestrated by Pedro Neto had Fluminense on the back foot. The Portuguese winger has hit the heights consistently this tournament - more so than any other Chelsea player with goals and assists. His ball into the box was poor though and easily met by defender Thiago Santos . But instead of clearing the danger the pass out of the area was low and straight to Chelsea's dangerous new attacker. The way Pedro picked his spot with a devilishly curling right foot shot underlined how at home he feels just a week after signing. The muted celebration symbolised what Fluminense means to Pedro, who started his career there. But yet again with the game in the palms of their hands, Chelsea went all soft. Just three minutes after taking the lead, defender And with nine minutes of the first half remaining their luck held again with a penalty call. French ref Francois Letexier pointed to the spot when Trevoh Chalobah handled a glancing header from Santos - the centre back involved in the first goal. VAR has been very much in the background for Chelsea this tournament and the first intervention by the spy in the sky saved their skins. The ref reviewed his decision on the pitchside monitor and U-turned after replays showed Chalobah keeping his left hand in a natural position close to his side as the ball cannoned off him. And from a scruffy breakout from defence Pedro sealed it for Chelsea when he was put clear through on the left by Enzo Fernandez. The Brazilian cut inside and buried a stunning rising shot in off the underside of the bar on 56 minutes before being taken off on the hour mark.
