Ryne Sandberg dies at 65: Reaction to death of Cubs icon and Hall of Famer
Sandberg, who was a 10-time All-Star in his career, passed away at the age of 65 on Monday, July 28, after another battle with metastatic prostate cancer that had returned and spread to other organs in his body back in December.
"Ryne Sandberg was a legend of the Chicago Cubs franchise and a beloved figure throughout Major League Baseball," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.

Added the Cubs on X (formerly Twitter): "Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans and will be remembered as one of the all-time greats in nearly 150 years of this historic franchise. His dedication to and respect for the game, along with his unrelenting integrity, grit, hustle, and competitive fire were hallmarks of his career."
Across his 16-year career, Sandberg built quite a resume when it came to awards, as he was a nine-time Gold Glove winner, seven-time Silver Slugger trophy winner and was named the 1984 National League Most Valuable Player. He also managed the Philadelphia Phillies, who drafted him in the 20th round of the 1978 MLB Draft, from 2013-2015, where he posted a managerial record of 119-159.

PHOENIX (AP) — Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in two runs, Brandon Pfaadt pitched into the sixth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Monday night. Gavin Sheets drew a two-out walk, moved to second when Ramón Laureano singled and scored on a single by Jake Cronenworth to make it 5-2. Key moment Jorge Barrosa doubled to lead off the fourth inning, moved to third when Ketel Marte singled and scored on a double by Carroll. Gurriel singled to drive in Carroll and give the Diamonbacks a 5-1 lead. Key stat Thomas went 2 for 4 and is hitting .371 (13 for 35) with a double, three homers, five RBIs and two walks in 11 games since the All-Star break. Adell hits two-run homer, Kikuchi strikes out seven as Angels beat Rays 5-1
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jo Adell hit a two-run homer, Yusei Kikuchi allowed four hits in six innings and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 on Monday night. The Rays struck in the opening frame when Yandy Díaz doubled to right and scored on Junior Caminero's sacrifice fly to center field. Kikuchi (5-7) escaped without further damage and finished with seven strikeouts and two walks. Yoán Moncada reached on a fielder's choice for the Angels in the second inning before Adell launched a 428-foot homer to left-center off Adrian Houser (6-3), putting Los Angeles ahead 2-1. The Angels made it 4-1 in the third inning on Taylor Ward's two-run single. Bryce Teodosio doubled in the sixth and Zach Neto drove him in with a double of his own that put the Angels up 5-1. Houser worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs while striking out three. Angels pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Christopher Morel finished 0 for 4 with four strikeouts for the Rays.
