Modi may skip ‘SCO Heads of State Summit' in China
India External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar will lead the Indian delegation instead of premier Modi.
The three-day important 25th meeting of SCO Head of States is planned for 31 August, September 1 and 2.
Sources disclosed that Narendra Modi's decision to stay away from the important Summit comes amidst rumours that Indian premier may avoid a possible face-off with Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif and other regional leaders during the high-level multilateral meeting.
It is worth mentioning here that the two nuclear-armed rivals had locked horns since four-day military conflict in May following April 22nd Pahalgam terrorist attack on tourists in Indian Occupied Kashmir.
Being chairman, China will preside over the 25th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State. The theme of this year's meeting will be, 'Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move.' The annual event is likely to focus on key discussions on regional security, economic cooperation, trade and the SCO's long-term strategic direction and way forward.
Among prominent leaders of the bloc who had been invited to attend the SCO Summit include: President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, President of China Xi Jinping (Host), President of Iran Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyz Republic President Sadyr Japarov, Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, Uzbek Head of State Shavkat Mirziyoyev and India's EAM S Jaishankar.
The Summit marks a significant milestone for the organisation, commemorating its 25th session since its establishment.
China has also invited Interim Afghan Government in Kabul to attend the SCO upcoming Summit. The invitation has been extended by Chinese Ambassador in Kabul. Afghanistan has been an inactive of the organization since September 2021. It is to mention that Afghanistan became an observer member of the SCO on June 7, 2012, but has not actively contributed in the organisation's activities since joining.

IIOJK ‘strongman' faces calls for resignation

How many days, weeks, months to also be held accountable and resign or get sacked?' Pawan Khera, a spokesperson for the main opposition Congress party, said in a post on X. In a democracy, the next step after taking the responsibility is resignation!' said Shama Mohamed, the national spokesperson for Congress. According to Kashmir Media Service, Imran Nabi Dar, a spokesperson for IIOJK ruling party, the National Conference (NC) that the next logical step for SInha 'should be to step down and apologise to the people of J&K whose lives, livelihood and dignity were put at stake due to his blunders'. Separately, a local leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami demanded accountability of the Indian government over the Pahalgam attack. 'The government must come out with details about the lapses that resulted in the killing of 26 civilians,' he said.

UK launches digital eVisas for Pakistani students, workers
Listen to article The United Kingdom has officially introduced digital eVisas for Pakistani students and workers, marking a significant step towards a modernised and streamlined immigration process. Starting from July 15, 2025, most primary applicants applying for UK study or work-related visas will no longer require a physical sticker visa in their passports. Instead, they will be issued a digital record of their immigration status, known as an eVisa. An eVisa is an online confirmation of an individual's permission to enter, stay, or work in the UK. It also outlines any conditions attached to their immigration status. This digital status can be accessed and managed through an online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. The change does not affect an individual's immigration status or the conditions of their stay but represents a shift in how this information is stored and shared. According to the British High Commission in Islamabad, the eVisa system aims to make the visa process more secure, efficient, and user-friendly. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott CMG OBE emphasised the convenience of the new system, stating that the transition to eVisas would simplify the process for Pakistani students and professionals. 'These changes to the UK visa system will make it much simpler for students and workers to prove their identity and visa status. It also means applicants can hold onto their passports, saving them time,' she said. The rollout applies to a wide range of visa categories. These include students—both for long-term and short-term study up to 11 months—along with individuals applying under the Global Business Mobility routes such as Senior or Specialist Workers, Graduate Trainees, and Secondment Workers. Other eligible categories include Global Talent, International Sportspersons, Skilled Workers (including those in the Health and Care sector), various Temporary Work routes, and applicants under the Youth Mobility Scheme. eVisa holders will be able to link their travel documents, such as passports, to their UKVI accounts to enable smoother international travel. Through the 'view and prove' service, individuals can securely share their immigration status with employers, landlords, or other authorised entities, particularly in England. However, not all visa applicants will receive an eVisa at this stage. Those applying as dependants or under visa categories not related to work or study—such as general visitor visas—will still be issued a physical sticker visa. Similarly, individuals who already possess valid physical visa stickers do not need to take any action, as their existing documents remain valid. This is part of a phased approach by the UK Home Office to fully digitise its immigration system. The goal is to eventually replace all physical immigration documents with secure, accessible digital records. The transition to eVisas aligns with global trends in immigration management and reflects the UK's commitment to using technology to improve the customer experience for visa applicants worldwide.

Pakistan, Russia agree to enhance ties in trade, energy, defence sectors
Pakistan and Russia have agreed to further enhance cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture and defence sectors. This understanding came at a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Tianjin, China. During the meeting, both the dignitaries expressed satisfaction over the positive trajectory of bilateral ties, DPM's Office said. On this occasion, the foreign minister reiterated the invitation for FM Lavrov to visit Pakistan. FM Dar met Chinese President Xi Jinping as well at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and conveyed him the warm greetings of the leadership, government and people of Pakistan. 'As iron-clad brothers and all-weather strategic cooperative partners, we remain committed to deepening Pak-China enduring friendship and advancing shared regional goals,' Dar wrote in a post on X. The meeting between the foreign minister and Chinese president was held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Dar also represented Pakistan at the joint call of the Foreign Ministers of the SCO Member States on President Xi. The Chinese president, welcoming the heads of delegations, underlined the salience of regional cooperation under the ambit of SCO, an organisation covering the Eurasian land mass and a large expanse of the world's population, Radio Pakistan reported. Senator Dar arrived in Beijing, China, on Monday to attend a three-day meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers being held in Tianjin, China. He is attending the event at the invitation of Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi.
