GNFL round six wrap: Royals stand tall at home while Railways snatch a win in Kalbarri

West Australian02-06-2025
Two stellar games — Chapman Valley battling it out against Brigades and Railways' close scare against Northampton — headlined round six of the GNFL on Saturday.
The Royals hosted the Hawks with the home side keen to bounce back after losing at home to Railways.
Brigades came off a 150-point win over Rovers and looked to carry their confidence into the battle in the Valley.
However, the Royals stood tall, defeating the visiting Hawks by 18 points, despite a third-quarter scare.
Chapman Valley welcomed the three Simpson brothers back for the first time in season 2025 with Kane and Beau returning to play alongside their brother Kobe. The trio put on a show and were among the Royals' best.
Tom Walker from Chapman Valley was judged best-on-ground for the Royals, alongside the Simpson brothers and Mick Horstman. Kane Simpson returned to the side after a knee injury with three goals with fellow forward Tyrone Papertalk Jr kicking two, while Kim Schofield also collected two for this efforts out of the middle.
Lucas Ronan was one of Brigades' best, finding himself on Jayden Schofield for parts of the game as the young forward booted two goals.
Chapman Valley jumped out to a quick start through forward Tom Warr before Brigades replied in the first quarter. However, the Royals managed to add two more to their total going into the first break.
A three-goal term for both sides in the second quarter saw momentum swing from end to end, with the Royals going into the second half up by two goals.
A fightback in the third quarter by Brigades had the visiting supporters up and about as the Hawks looked to mount a comeback.
Ronan came though with an important goal in the third as the Hawks gained momentum.
A three-goal to two third quarter had Brigades in the box seat as the visitors looked to storm home in the final term, only down by seven points.
Chapman Valley, however, bounced back and held off a charging Brigades outfit to claim victory by 18 points, 10.7 (67) to 7.7 (49).
Railways snatched victory late in the last quarter as Northampton put up the toughest challenge the Blues had faced this season, with only four points separating the teams at the final siren in Kalbarri.
Callum Teakle impressed in the ruck for Northampton, earning himself best-on-ground honours along with teammates Tyler Caddy, Kingsley Smith, Blake Luxton and Jaden Poletti.
For the Blues, half-back Drew Tunbridge claimed best-on-ground honours while Matt Kimberley, in his 150th game, shone brightly once again.
Chris Scott and Seth Farmer booted two goals apiece for the Blues in the low-scoring affair.
It was a tight first half as both sides went goal for goal, with the Rams edging ahead by a goal going into the main break. Railways clawed their way back into the contest in the third term, setting the stage for a last-quarter showdown.
Northampton jumped out of the blocks with a goal before Railways replied with one of their own. The Rams managed two more majors in the final term before Railways locked it in their forward 50 with Rams' defenders scrambling.
A goal late through Blues' Damien King put Railways in front, securing a four-point win for the Blues, who remain undefeated this season. The final score was Northampton 7.7 (49) to Railways 7.11 (53).
The final game of the round saw Rovers host Towns, with the traveling Bulldogs managing to bounce back after last week's thumping at the hands of Railways to secure a 70-point win over the Demons.
Clay Azevedo, Matt Russell, Thomas Collins, Blake Tazewell and Farren Parfitt were judged best-on-ground at Greenough Oval for Rovers with Kevin Seelander and Farren Parfit booting two goals each.
For Towns it was Zane Marwick who was judged best-on-ground with Drew Forrester, Jaylen Parsons, Bobby Gibson and Caleb Sewell all impressing in the Bulldogs' win away from home.
The final score was Rovers 6.5 (41) to Towns 17.9 (111).

Fremantle Dockers celebrate Retro Round as players and staff bring out old school gear at training

Fremantle headed back in time on Tuesday, with the entire staff and players showcasing uniforms from the past as they celebrate Retro Round. The Dockers will wear a purple jumper with a white anchor against Carlton on Sunday as a nod to the uniform which was introduced in 2003. But Tuesday was a day for gear from many eras, with development coach Tendai Mzungu rocking a jacket with the old school purple, green and red. Forward Murphy Reid wasn't even born when the Dockers first wore the uniform they'll run out in this week. But he said the players were enjoying the throwback and the jumper. 'It's pretty cool. I wouldn't mind seeing it as the actual jumper. I haven't seen anything like it yet. It'll be cool to wear it,' Reid said. 'It was before my time but you see photos of Pav wearing it but it was a little bit before my time. 'We had a bit of a retro theme going on today. We're keen to put it on and embrace it. All the boys get around it. The media team loves it. They get all of the videos and photos of everyone to see who does it best. It brings a bit of a buzz around.' Tuesday's session was the club's lightest of the week with a focus on recovery but Cooper Simpson showed he could be just as handy with a soccer ball as he is with a footy. Simpson's ability to control the round ball was impressive. Simpson made his return from injury for Peel last weekend, collecting 11 disposals. Key forward Jye Amiss continues to train by himself during the early week recovery sessions. While his teammates play small games, Amiss is constantly working on his body. Amiss kicked three goals in the western derby in a promising display.

Adam Simpson ‘was in tears' after infamous 2022 nightclub incident involving Patrick Naish and six others

Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson was brought to tears in the aftermath of the club's infamous COVID nightclub incident in 2022. Seven Eagles players were fined $5000 after being spotted at a Perth nightclub during the late stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, at which point AFL players were living under strict parameters to ensure the competition could run with limited disruption during what was an unprecedented time. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Pat Naish explains story behind infamous nightclub incident. Pat Naish, Hugh Dixon, Jackson Nelson, Josh Rotham, Jake Waterman, Rhett Bazzo and Campbell Chesser were all sanctioned by the club. At the time, Simpson called it an 'error in judgement'. 'Decisions have been made, sanctions have been laid and now we need to get on with it,' Simpson told 7NEWS Perth after it happened. 'They're very remorseful, obviously it's an error in judgement and we'll move on. 'With the current environment and where we're at, it's just really poor judgement from those boys. 'They've got a bit of trust to earn back from the playing group and the club.' Speaking to new podcast What Could've Been about the incident for the first time, Naish — who moved to West Coast after being delisted by Richmond in 2021 — says he had even let then-Eagles captain Luke Shuey know about the night out in advance. 'It was (Richmond defender) Nathan Broad's engagement party, because he's from WA and so is his partner,' Naish said. 'I got invited to that, and we played Richmond that Friday night, and I reckon it was on a Saturday (the engagement). 'What I thought is that I was just catching up with a couple of Richmond mates for dinner and a couple of beers, and I ended up leaving there at like 10.30pm. It was a harmless night. 'But yeah, got out, left there early, went home, and thought nothing of it. 'And I ran it by 'Boots' (Shuey) before. I was like, 'Mate, don't know if this is all good but I've got a couple of the Richmond boys over, they're over for Broady's, and I've been invited to his engagement party'.' Simpson — who incidentally contracted COVID days later, along with several others at the club — was distraught when he spoke to Naish the next Monday. 'The photo that got leaked was a photo that Hip-E Club actually posted on their Instagram, and it was Jackson Nelson with Liam Baker, Josh Rotham and a couple other boys, and that's how the club found out,' Naish said. 'From there, in WA, it was literally like the biggest news ever. 'I remember we played Brisbane the next week and I was good mates with Cam Rayner, and Cam goes, 'Why are you blokes in trouble?' and I was like, 'Mate, I actually have no idea'. 'I remember we had to go in on the Monday and I walked into Simmo's office, and Simmo was in tears — in tears. 'Because he goes, 'Mate, we found you, we gave you a second life and you've repaid us like this'. 'I reckon I had four beers, like I wasn't even (doing anything bad).' A club statement at the time said the players had disobeyed 'guidelines', but didn't specify that any rules were broken. Naish, who had been given a lifeline by the Eagles earlier that year as a pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) addition to the list, was delisted at season's end. 'Did it ruin my career? I don't know,' the 26-year-old said. 'I don't think about it much, to be completely honest. 'I enjoyed the first half of the year (in the AFL side) and then enjoyed playing WAFL. 'I went out of my comfort zone moving to WA for a year and lived in Wembley which is a good part of the world. 'But I wouldn't change it to be honest; it was unreal, I met some lifelong friends there, and had some fun along the way.' Naish, the son of former Tigers great Chris Naish was originally drafted as a father-son selection to the Tigers in 2017. He played nine games at Tigerland before being delisted at the end of 2021. He played another 11 games at West Coast in 2022.
