e-PAN card fraud alert! Received email prompting PAN Card download? Check important message from Income Tax Department
The Press Information Bureau's Fact Check unit has issued a warning against such messages, confirming that they are fake.
⚠️ This Email is #Fake, PIB Fact Check said in an advisory shared on social media, along with a screenshot of one such phishing email. The fraudulent message, titled 'Download e-PAN Card Online: A step-by-step guide', comes from an unauthorised address and is designed to trick recipients into clicking malicious links.
According to the advisory, users must not respond to any emails, links, calls, or SMS that request financial or personal information such as bank details, PIN numbers, or passwords.
The
Income Tax Department
clarified that:
It does not request personal details through email.
It never asks for PINs, passwords or credit card information via messages.
Users should be cautious of emails that direct them to fake IT department websites.
Phishing emails typically pretend to be from authorised institutions and may contain links or attachments that can infect your computer. The department has outlined the following safety guidelines:
Do not reply to such emails.
Do not open any attachments.
Do not click on suspicious links, or copy-paste them into your browser.
Keep your anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software updated to guard against malware.
If you suspect an email or website to be fraudulent:
Forward it to webmanager@incometax.gov.in.
Also send a copy to incident@cert-in.org.in.
You can forward the entire message or include its Internet headers to help track the sender.
Delete the email after reporting.

Phishing is a fraudulent practice used to steal sensitive information like usernames, passwords, and credit card details by posing as a legitimate and trusted source in digital communications. Cybercriminals often impersonate banks, popular social media platforms, e-commerce sites, online payment services, or IT administrators to deceive recipients.
These deceptive messages—usually sent via email or instant messaging—often direct users to fake websites that closely mimic the appearance of genuine ones, tricking them into entering confidential information.

FIR against army officer who said forged papers were for gathering intel
1 2 Shimla: An FIR has been registered at Dharampur police station in Solan district against a lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army, previously posted at Dagshai Cantonment, for allegedly possessing forged documents and a 12-bore gun without a valid licence. The FIR, lodged on July 6, is based on a complaint submitted by a junior commissioned officer posted at Dagshai Cantonment. Charges include cheating, forgery, and illegal possession of the gun under Section 25 of the Arms Act. According to the complaint, on Aug 23, 2023, army authorities at Dagshai Cantonment recovered a 12-bore gun and several documents from the possession of the lieutenant colonel. The documents included a driving licence, Aadhar card, and PAN card bearing the officer's photograph. A court of inquiry initiated by the army revealed that the officer possessed duplicate identity cards, Aadhar cards, and PAN cards. It emerged that the officer prepared a set of these illegal documents in the name of one Mustafa, but they featured his own photograph. It has been alleged that when he was questioned, the lieutenant colonel told inquiry officers that when he was posted in Jammu and Kashmir earlier, he got these documents made for intelligence-gathering purposes. However, he could not provide evidence of permission from a senior officer for such actions, it has been alleged. Additionally, the officer failed to present a licence for the gun found in his possession. Following the initiation of the court of inquiry at Dagshai Cantonment, the officer was attached to an army unit in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. After the FIR was registered, Dharampur police have begun the process to associate the accused army officer with the investigation, police said.
