"Speak In Marathi": Fight Over Seat In Mumbai Local Turns Into Language Row
A seemingly small fight over a seat in a Mumbai local train escalated into a full-blown language row earlier this week, with one woman telling the other to learn Marathi or "get out". The incident took place on Friday evening in a crowded ladies' coach of the train running on the Central line.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, in which six to seven women can be seen arguing over a seat - something that is not strange to a Mumbai local.
However, during this time, one woman criticised another passenger for not speaking in Marathi. "If you want to stay in our Mumbai, speak Marathi, otherwise get out," she told her.
Soon after, other women in the train also joined the debate.
According to officials, the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police are investigating the incident.
This comes amid the ongoing language row in Maharashtra, with Raj Thackeray's MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) party workers being criticised for their continuous targeting and confrontation of people not speaking in Marathi.
Earlier this week, a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Vikhroli was assaulted by MNS workers over a WhatsApp status deemed offensive to the Marathi-speaking community. The video shows the shopkeeper being forced to apologise publicly while being threatened and physically attacked.
On July 1, MNS workers in Thane slapped a street food vendor for refusing to converse in Marathi. In another incident, a migrant auto-rickshaw driver in Maharashtra's Palghar district was assaulted in full public view by MNS and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) supporters.
MNS workers also vandalised businessman Sushil Kedia's office in Mumbai, days after he vowed not to learn Marathi. The incident was captured on camera, in which five to six supporters of Raj Thackeray can be seen throwing what looked like bricks at the office. A security personnel rushed in to stop the attack, but they only stopped after emptying the bags. The businessman later issued an apology.

The cyber wing of the Kochi City police arrested two persons who were allegedly involved in cheating people through a fake Parivahan application. The accused, Uttar Pradesh natives Atul Kumar Singh, 32, and Manish Yadav, 24, reportedly sent fake files via WhatsApp and managed to make people believe that it was for enabling paying of fines for traffic-rule violations. The accused were arrested by the cyber police in an operation conducted at Varanasi after a Kochi resident submitted a complaint stating that he was duped of ₹85,000 through a fake Parivahan link. On inspection of their phones, the police recovered information on over 2,700 vehicles from Kerala, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

The convoy's entry was coordinated with local Druze-controlled authorities and government agencies, he said. Mahayuti meets in Nashik to discuss strategy for civic polls
Nashik: In a bid to strengthen coordination ahead of the upcoming local body elections, the city unit chiefs of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, key parties of the Mahayuti alliance, met on Saturday at the NCP's Rashtrawadi Bhawan. The meeting focused on strategies for the municipal polls, including the possibility of contesting jointly or independently. The meeting was attended by BJP city unit chief Sunil Kedar, NCP's Ranjan Thakre, and Shiv Sena's Praveen Tidme. "We unanimously decided to ensure we take to the masses the works done by the state and central govt so that people understand the benefit of the Mahayuti being in power. We want the Mahayuti to prevail in Nashik city as well. We all will be working towards the same," said Kedar. Shiv Sena's Tidme echoed the sentiment, emphasizing development as the shared objective. "The state is functioning under the leadership of CM Devendra Fadnavis, Dy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Since the goal was the development of the city, we have decided to strengthen coordination at the local levels and strengthen the Mahayuti and contest the elections united," he said. However, the decision on whether to contest the polls jointly or separately has been left to the state leadership. "There is no second thought that the state leadership decision will be followed in totality. All three parties are therefore working on both possibilities," Kedar added. The formation of the committee comes amid intensified outreach by the BJP and Shiv Sena to woo workers from Shiv Sena (UBT), with the NCP seen trailing in such efforts.
