This most recent estimate comes after the House and Senate approved separate versions of a $425 million budget infusion for the system. Included in the supplemental budget is a set of reforms that looks to lower shelter capacity, increase background checks, and increase eligibility requirements.
Senate loads reform bill with shelter reporting requirements
Families are sorted into two tracks within the shelter system based on their level of need: Bridge and Rapid track.
Bridge track families are considered to have higher or more complex needs, and permitted to stay in traditional shelters for up to six months. 5,894 families are currently in the Bridge track.
Rapid track families are determined to have lower support needs, and are permitted to stay in temporary shelter sites for up to 30 days. 247 Rapid track families are currently in the system.
Both tracks have the overarching goal of making shelter stays rare, brief, and non-recurring, and aim to give families the resources they need to acquire stable housing and employment.
In western Massachusetts, the following towns and cities have families in the Bridge track:
Amherst: 5
Chicopee: 59
Greenfield: 18
Holyoke: 168
Northampton: 19
Pittsfield: 26
South Hadley: 5
Springfield: 248
West Springfield: 53
There are currently no Rapid track families at temporary respite centers in western Massachusetts.
One report also tracked how much additional funding was needed in school districts to support EA students from September to November of 2024.
In western Massachusetts, the following additional funding was required for the September-November 2024 time period:

Greenfield: $191,319
Hadley: $28,530

In total since October 2022, Massachusetts has spent over $57.5 million in supplemental funding for school districts across the state. In fiscal year 2024, the state spent $856.8 million on the system. According to the report, fiscal year 2025's project costs will be around $1.064 billion.
These reports are published every two weeks by the Executive Office for Housing and Livable Communities Secretary Ed Augustus and Executive Office for Administration and Finance Secretary Matthew Gorzkowicz.

Video shows airborne shark hitting surfer's face in Florida
A man surfing in Florida was hit in the face by a spinning shark — and the encounter was caught on camera. Surfer Darren Kaye said he was in waters off New Smyrna Beach, Florida on Friday evening when the spinner shark knocked him off his board. Video shows the shark flying from the water and striking Kaye, knocking him off his board. In an Instagram post, Kaye said the shark's nose hit him in the face and its pectoral fin hit him on the left arm. Kaye identified the animal as a spinner shark. The species is known for the spinning leaps it takes while hunting prey, according to the Florida Fish And Wildlife Conservation Commission. The sharks often jump out of the water, the commission said. Adult spinner sharks grow to a maximum length of seven to eight feet, and can weigh up to 110 pounds. Kaye said the shark hit him "like a truck." In another video describing the event, Kaye said he and other surfers in the area had seen the shark "chilling" and "doing its thing" in the area, but had paid it no mind because the species is a common sight. "Boom, all of a sudden, like crazy rocket ship, straight at my dome," Kaye said in the video, which was recorded for Surfline, a company that uses remote cameras to monitor ocean conditions. A Surfline camera captured the video of the shark hitting him. The encounter was "absolutely nuts," Kaye said, but it didn't rattle him -- he surfed for another 45 minutes afterwards, he said. Then, he looked up the video and sent it to friends and family. "Just another day at the inlet!" he wrote on Instagram. New Smyrna Beach is off Florida's east coast. The city is about 15 miles south of Daytona Beach. The city has 17 miles of coastline and is known for good surfing conditions, according to its website. Juneteenth recognizes one of the most important moments in United States history. Also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Juneteenth Independence Day and Black Independence Day, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. Although Juneteenth has been unofficially celebrated for more than 150 years, the U.S. now commemorates the day as an official holiday. Casa Italiana social club returns to Springfield, bringing Italian Feast back to city
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Reviving the Italian-American heritage in Springfield, dozens of people came together on Friday for the grand opening of the Italian social club Casa Italiana. Celebrating Italian-American heritage and spreading cheer and tradition, a ribbon-cutting took place for Casa Italiana. This social club was originally founded in 1897, the historic home known to many is recognized as the heart and soul of the local Italian community. Springfield Juneteenth Jubilee Committee hosts annual flag raising ceremony 'This is about family, faith, and food,' said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. 'And now to have this Casa Italiana back to the future, and there's a lot of tradition down here. I remember sweeping the streets at 3:00 a.m. after the feast and the fireworks.' 'They've got a nice group of positive people,' said Rico Daniele, member of the Sons & Daughters of Italy. 'We have 20 members now, we're trying to bring it back like the old days and bring people together.' The club also announced that in a month, the one and only Italian Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will return to the city of Springfield. This will mark the first time in 20 years that the feast will take place, bringing back the 40-foot grease pole competition and traditional food that locals won't want to miss. 'People might remember way back in the day when people went up the pole to get the prosciutto and salami to get that,' said Salvato Circosta, President of Casa Italiana.
